Arnett Gardens Football Club says goalkeeper Roje Williams is in good spirits as he continues to recover in hospital from a stab wound sustained on Monday night and has called for patience and respect as investigations into the incident continue.
Williams, 24, was reportedly stabbed by a woman said to be his partner shortly after his team’s 0-0 draw in the highly anticipated derby clash against Tivoli Gardens in the Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League (JPL) at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex. The incident is said to have occurred on a main road near the venue.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Arnett Gardens FC distanced itself from the altercation and emphasized that the matter was not football-related.
"Arnett Gardens Football Club is deeply concerned by the recent incident involving our goalkeeper, Roje Williams, who was stabbed outside our facility following the football match last night,” the statement read.
“The incident took place on a main road near the venue, and we would like to clarify that it was in no way related to football or connected to the club, its supporters, or any rival teams. Roje is receiving medical attention, and we are in contact with him and his family. We wish him a full and speedy recovery," it added.
The club further underscored its commitment to player safety and its cooperation with law enforcement authorities.
"The safety and well-being of all our players and staff remain a top priority, and we are fully cooperating with authorities as they investigate this unfortunate incident. We urge the public to refrain from spreading misinformation and to respect the privacy of Roje and his family during this time. We ask for patience and support as the investigation progresses," the statement continued.
Williams, who has been a solid presence between the posts for Arnett this season, is said to be in stable condition. No official charges have been announced, and police investigations are ongoing.
