Grand Slam Track founder, commissioner and CEO, Michael Johnson, has expressed gratitude to everyone involved in last week’s inaugural Grand Slam Track Event at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Some of the world’s best athletes put on a show from April 4-6, delighting the fans who turned out to see the action.
“We really appreciate all of the support. I’ve been overwhelmed by all the comments saying this is what track needed, thank you for taking care of these athletes, it means a lot,” the former 200m and 400m world record holder said in a statement on Instagram on Monday.
He issued a special thanks to the athletes who competed, noting that they exceeded even his expectations with their performances throughout the three days.
“They were excited. They had a great time and they performed unbelievably,” he said.
“They showed what athletes can do when you put the best against the best and you compensate them fairly, take good care of them and treat them like the professionals and the superheroes that they are, they will show you what they’re made of,” he added.
As with every new venture, Johnson did acknowledge that they came up short in some areas but believes the product will improve with each slam going forward.
“We got some things right. We got some things wrong. It was our first one. We expected that,” he said.
“We’re going to keep improving from one slam to the next and one season to the next. We’re dedicated to this. We’re dedicated to elevating these athletes and elevating this sport to the status that it should be and this was a great start. We couldn’t be happier with it,” Johnson added.
