Kirk McKenzie hit his second hundred in first-class cricket but the Guyana Harpy Eagles ended day three of their fourth-round West Indies Championship fixture against the Jamaica Scorpions at Sabina Park on Friday in a strong position.
The Harpy Eagles, after beginning the day 68-1 with a second innings lead of 363, posted 193-3 in their second innings before declaring after 69.3 overs leaving the Scorpions needing a mammoth 488 for victory.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul carried on from his overnight 37 to post a top-score of 74 off 172 balls including three fours and a six while Kevlon Anderson added to his first innings 116 with 50* off 85 balls including three fours.
In a stark contrast from their first innings where they were bundled out for just 44 in 25.5 overs, the Scorpions batting showed signs of life to end the day 179-3 in 48 overs needing a further 310 runs on Saturday’s final day for victory.
McKenzie starred with an unbeaten 104* off 147 balls including nine fours and five sixes and shared in a 132-run second wicket partnership with Brandon King who made 53 off 110 balls before falling nine overs before the end of the day’s play.
Odain McCatty (5) and Jermaine Blackwood (0) are the other batsmen back in the shed while Javelle Glenn will look to continue the fight for the Jamaicans on Saturday when he resumes his innings alongside McKenzie on 5*.
Ronaldo Alimohamed has, so far, taken two wickets in the second innings to take his match tally up to eight while Gudakesh Motie picked up the other wicket.
Guyana still remains firmly in the drivers’ seat heading into tomorrow’s final day.
