"Bunny" Shaw, Foden, Palmer win top prizes at PFA Awards

Foden took home the Players' Player of the Year award for the first time, while Palmer was named the Young Player of the Year.

The women's Players' Player of the Year honour went to Shaw, with the Young Player of the Year award copped by Grace Clinton.

Two-time Young Player winner Foden had already been announced as the Premier League Player of the Season and the FWA Footballer of the Year.

Following the midweek ceremony, he has now also been recognised by his fellow professionals after starring in Manchester City's fourth straight title triumph.

Ex-City man Palmer had likewise been nominated for the top award after an outstanding first season at Chelsea, in which he netted 22 league goals.

However, Palmer was not included in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

Foden made the cut alongside City team-mate Erling Haaland and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins in attack.

There were four City players included, with Kyle Walker and Rodri selected, but the champions were outnumbered by Arsenal's five representatives.

David Raya, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard earned recognition, with Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk completing the XI.

The PFA WSL Team of the Year included both Players' Player of the Year Shaw and Young Player of the Year Clinton.

Shaw was one of six City stars in the XI despite her side being pipped to the title by Chelsea, who could count only three players in the team.

A goal and an assist for 'Bunny' Shaw as Manchester City Women defeat Everton 2-1 in Women's League Cup opener

Shaw also had an assist as she fed teammate Jess Park, who scored the opener in the 21st minute to see Manchester City take a 1-0 lead into the half-time break.

Shortly after the resumption, Shaw got her goal smashing in from 10 yard to give the Cityzens a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute.

“Got the job done. On to the next,” a proud Shaw posted on Instagram afterwards.

Toni Duggan headed in in stoppage time for Everton’s consolation. The former Manchester City player was scoring her first goal since she returned from maternity leave after giving birth to a daughter in March.

Beth Mead v Ellen White on WSL opening weekend as Arsenal get tricky Man City trip

Mead hit a hat-trick and White scored twice as England thrashed Norway 8-0 in their second Euro 2022 group match on Monday evening. However, eyes are already turning towards another WSL campaign, which begins on the weekend of September 10-11, as Arsenal and City look to dethrone three-peat champions Chelsea.

As well as Mead, Arsenal have England captain Leah Williamson and Netherlands striker Vivianne Miedema among their rich player pool, while White is joined in City's ranks by the likes of England winger Lauren Hemp, former Lionesses skipper Steph Houghton and Jamaica striker Khadija Shaw.

Arsenal finished second in the table last year, a point behind Chelsea, with City third. Chelsea begin their quest for a fourth consecutive title when they host West Ham, while Manchester United travel to Tottenham, Everton host Leicester City, Brighton and Hove Albion welcome Aston Villa, and promoted Liverpool journey to Reading.

The penultimate round on the weekend of May 20-21 could be pivotal in determining the destiny of the title as Chelsea tackle Arsenal and City make the short trip to United for the Manchester derby.

Arsenal finish at home to Aston Villa a week later, City host Everton and Chelsea travel to Reading. Liverpool and Manchester United also go head-to-head on the final weekend.

Kelly Simmons, the Football Association's director of the women's professional game, said: "We really want to capture the momentum generated from the Women's Euros this summer, which will significantly help us take this league to the next level."

Bunny Shaw continues hot scoring streak as Manchester City Women blank Sunderland 3-0 in FA Cup

In a match that City dominated Shaw scored the final goal in 59th minute to seal the victory.

Manchester City dominated the match with 64 per cent possession and taking 14 shots at goal, eight of them on target keeping Claudia Moan busy throughout. The breakthrough came early when Julie Blakstad netted in the eighth minute.

Alex Greenwood’s corner was poorly cleared by Sunderland’s defence.

Shaw’s back header then found Steph Houghton, whose clever pass found Filippa Angeldahl, who squared for Blakstad to tap home. Manchester City went into the break leading 1-0 but added a second early on the resumption when once again poor defending saw Hayley Raso run through to slot past Moan.

Shaw’s goal came when Houghton’s defence-splitting pass was slid home by the Jamaican striker.

The Jamaican will have a chance to add to her eight league goals this coming Sunday, when Manchester City take on Brighton Hove Albion, a team with the worst defensive record in the WSL.

Bunny Shaw scores as Man. City Women blank Spurs 3-0 to book spot in final WSL Continental Cup

In the semi-final encounter played at the Academy Stadium Jess Park put City up 1-0 in the 21st minute before Shaw doubled the lead in the 27thafter she tapped into an empty net after Caroline Weir’s shot took a deflection following a terrific run from Lauren Hemp.

Shaw, who celebrated her 25th birthday on Monday, January 31, actually had a chance to open the scoring when she surged into the box early in the game but she shot past goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer but wide of the far post.

Hemp sealed the victory in the 71st minute to send City into the final set for March 5.

Bunny' Shaw scores 17th league goal as Manchester City Women defeat West Ham Women 6-2 at Academy Stadium

Shaw scored in the 62nd minute that made it 4-1 for the Cityzens, who scored early and often in the match-up that ended 6-2 at the Academy Stadium.

Chloe Kelly scored twice in the sixth and seventh minutes giving Manchester City early control of the match. Emma Sterle made it 2-1 in the 21st minute but barely four minutes later, City regained their two-goal cushion when Laura Coombs headed in to make it 3-1.

Shaw added City’s fourth and Steph Houghton, who was celebrating her birthday added a fifth three minutes later. Khaira Keating’s own goal made it 5-2 in the 72nd before Mary Fowler scored Manchester City’s sixth eight minutes from the end of regulation.

Manchester City Women now have 41 points from 18 games and are now just three points behind league leaders Manchester United Women.

Chelsea Women are third on 40 points but have played only 16 matches.

Not far behind, Arsenal Women who have 38 points from 17 matches played, complete the top four.

Bunny' Shaw scores four as Manchester City Women wallop Bristol City 8-1 in FA Women's Cup

In yet another dominating performance during which they enjoyed 75 per cent possession, Manchester City scored their eight goals from 12 shots in target against their hapless opponents who scored what amounted a consolation goal 10 minutes into the second half.

However, Shaw alone proved too much for Bristol City scoring in the 13th, 25th, 41st minutes as City took a 4-0 lead into the interval.

Filippa Angeldahl scored the fourth in first-half stoppage time.

Julie Blakstad made it 5-0 early into the second half when she scored their first of her two goals in the 53rd.

Gracie Jane Patricia Pearse made it 5-1 two minutes later.

Shaw scored her fourth in the 75th to make it 6-1 before Blakstad made it 7-1 in the 83rd.

Jemima Dahou scored Manchester City’s eighth to complete rout in stoppage time.

For her exploits, Shaw took home match ball.

Chelsea champions, Liverpool relegated - WSL decided on points-per-game

The WSL and Women's Championship were suspended indefinitely in March due to the coronavirus pandemic and last month the FA announced the campaign would not resume.

Chelsea were second in the table when the action stopped, but Emma Hayes' team had a better PPG score than Manchester City, (2.6 to 2.5) having played one game fewer than the leaders.

City and Chelsea will represent the WSL in the Women's Champions League next term.

It was similarly tight at the foot of the table, with bottom club Liverpool relegated.

The Reds had six points from 14 games, giving them an inferior PPG return of 0.43 to 11th-placed Birmingham, who had a similarly paltry seven points from 13 outings.

Aston Villa will replace Liverpool after being awarded the Championship title.

In a statement, the FA said it would hold discussions with clubs and stakeholders with the intention of announcing a start date for 2020-21 soon.

Chelsea clinch WSL title after beating Manchester United

Emma Hayes' side went into the final day of the season top of the table, a point ahead of the Gunners and knowing that a win would seal their third consecutive league title.

There were nerves at Kingsmeadow on Sunday after goals from Martha Thomas and Ella Toone either side of Erin Cuthbert's equaliser had given United a 2-1 lead at half-time.

However, two goals from the Football Writers' Association's women's player of the year Sam Kerr and another from Guro Reiten in the second half sealed a 4-2 victory, clinching the title for the Blues.

Kerr's second was an appropriately stunning effort for the occasion, with the Australian lobbing United goalkeeper Mary Earps with a turn and volley from almost 30-yards to make sure of victory.

Arsenal did their bit by winning 2-0 away at West Ham, but it was not enough for Jonas Eidevall and his team.

United's defeat and Manchester City's 4-0 win at Reading also meant the latter finishing third ahead of the Red Devils, sealing the final Women's Champions League spot.

Cushing leaves Manchester City Women for MLS chance with New York City FC

Cushing said it was "incredibly difficult" to reach the decision to leave, as he prepares to join the City Football Group's Major League Soccer outfit.

Appointed at the end of 2013, Cushing led City as they joined the Women's Super League, bolstered by new signings Steph Houghton, Karen Bardsley, Jill Scott and Toni Duggan.

Those England stars helped Cushing establish City as a major force when they were handed a place in a new-look WSL for the 2014 season, prominent among clubs spearheading the move to full-time professionalism.

City won the WSL title in 2016 and added FA Cup victories at Wembley in 2017 and 2019, also reaching the Champions League semi-finals in 2017 and 2018, losing to Lyon both times.

Now 35, Cushing will become assistant to former Celtic manager Ronny Deila at MLS side New York City.

His last match with Manchester City Women will be the WSL home match against Arsenal on February 2.

Cushing said: "Making the decision to leave MCWFC has been incredibly difficult given the fantastic players and staff that we have here and the incredible success that we have achieved together - it isn't one that I have taken lightly.

"We've had an amazing six-and-a-half seasons and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with everybody – I will be extremely emotional to leave, but I'm very excited for my next role within the City Football Group.

"Linking up with New York City and Ronny (Deila) is a brilliant opportunity and I'm really looking forward to working in the MLS."

City said Cushing's assistant, Alan Mahon, would take charge of the women's team on an interim basis.

England World Cup star Scott lands Man City player-coach role

The Sunderland-born player joined City from Everton in 2014 and has committed to a two-year extension that runs to 2022.

Scott, 33, has scored 24 goals in 167 games for City, winning the Women's Super League in 2016 and helping the team to runner-up finishes in each season since.

She has also won two FA Women's Cups and three Continental Cups with City, plus 149 caps for England over the course of her career.

Scott said: "Although I've been named as a player-coach, I want to reiterate that I'm a player first and foremost – I still want to play for this team and achieve success."

Her appointment boosts a City staff led by new head coach Gareth Taylor, who was appointed in May to his role with the women's team after predecessor Nick Cushing left to join New York City FC.

Scott, who has played in four World Cups, follows former England team-mate Casey Stoney into coaching at WSL level. Stoney is now manager of Manchester United Women.

"Coaching might bring new aspects for me," Scott said. "But it's about working hard on the pitch and putting in the hours off it, trying to grow my knowledge of the game to help the team in any way I can."

England's record goalscorer White announces retirement at 33 after winning Euro 2022

Manchester City forward White was in the first England women's team to lift a major trophy when she was part of the squad that won the Euro 2022 title at Wembley Stadium in July, beating Germany 2-1 in the final.

She came through the Arsenal academy before leaving to join Chelsea in 2005, where she spent three seasons before joining Leeds United.

During her time at Leeds, she scored on her England debut in a 3-0 win over Austria in March 2010.

White returned to Arsenal later in the year and stayed for three years, winning three league titles and two FA Cups in a successful spell.

She then spent time with Notts County and Birmingham City, before making the move to City. In February 2021, she became the all-time record goal scorer in the Women's Super League.

White became England's record scorer when she netted a hat-trick in a 20-thrashing of Latvia last year, and her shining moment came when she helped the Lionesses to European glory on home soil. She scored twice across six appearances in the tournament.

She scored 52 goals for her country, having won 113 caps.

In a statement on social media, White said: "This has been one of the hardest decisions of my life but one that I know is the right decision for me.

"And this is my time to say goodbye to football and watch the next generation shine. It has been my greatest honour and privilege to play this game.

"In particular playing for England has and always will be the greatest gift. My dreams came true on July 31, winning the Euros and becoming a European champion.

"Finally, let’s use the momentum from the Euro's win to make sure that every young person in all communities has the opportunity to play and feel connected to all England football teams."

Everton 1-3 Manchester City: Stanway late show clinches Women's FA Cup triumph

Stanway had earlier been denied what looked a certain goal by Megan Finnigan's superb tackle, with Everton goalkeeper Sandy MacIver also pulling off a string of outstanding saves while Caroline Weir twice hit the woodwork.

City had hit the front through Sam Mewis' 40th-minute header, with Valerie Gauvin striking back for the Toffees, who were aiming to win the FA Cup for the first time in a decade.

Despite a stern rearguard effort, however, Everton's resilience was broken when substitutes Stanway and Janine Beckie secured City's third FA Cup triumph in four seasons.

Though City started well, Lucy Bronze had to make a last-ditch challenge on Hayley Raso 15 minutes in, and the England star was perhaps fortunate to escape with just a booking.

Chloe Kelly saw a strike brilliantly saved by MacIver soon after, but City had the lead their possession warranted when Mewis headed in unmarked from Alex Greenwood's inswinging corner.

It looked like Gauvin would have to make way when she was caught by Steph Houghton, yet the France international played through the pain and got her reward on the hour.

Five minutes after City's Weir struck the upright, an inswinging corner caught out Demi Stokes, and Gauvin pounced to nod in from point-blank range.

With Gauvin missing a great chance to give Everton the lead, Weir blazed over from the centre of the area at the other end before rattling the crossbar with a looping effort as extra-time was required.

City picked up where they left off, with Finnigan making an outstanding tackle on Stanway and MacIver tipping Houghton's header from the resulting corner onto the upright.

Yet Stanway would not be denied again and, after racing onto Jess Park's pass, she squeezed a shot in off the right-hand post in the 111th minute, before she teed up Beckie to round off the win with the last kick of the game.

Hat-trick for Bunny Shaw as Manchester City Women thrash Sheffield United 7-0 in FA Women's Cup

Prior to the match Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor, promised they would not take their second-tier opponents lightly.

"With some of the teams you play, there's not a huge amount of difference in level between the kind of top end of the championship to the bottom end of the WSL,” he said.

“I think it's just making sure that as a team, we are prepared, we're focused. We're not being neglectful of the opposition.”

They were not.

In a dominant display in which Manchester City took 27 shots, 14 on target, Shaw opened the scoring in the 16th minute. The three-time FA Women’s Cup champions doubled their lead when Chloe Kelly scored in the 38th minute as City threatened to run rampant.

Deyna Castellanos then scored on the stroke of half-time to send City into the break with a 3-0 lead.

Shaw was against first on the scoresheet with her second goal six minutes after the resumption before Julie Blakstad scored the first of her two goals in the 53rd minute.

Blakstad scored her second in the 78th minute to make it 6-0.

Shaw completed her hat-trick in the 87th minute to complete the rout.

Jamaica and Manchester City striker Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw signs contract extension with Nike

“The journey continues. Few more years with @Nike. Happy to be part of the family,” she posted under a picture of her about to sign a document representing her new contract.

The length of the contract is unknown.

Shaw initially signed with Nike in 2019 and became the first Jamaican and Caribbean female footballer to sign with a global sports apparel company.

Since then she led Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz to qualification for a second consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cup. Shaw is in her second season with Manchester City Women after winning the golden boot award at Bordeaux in France.

After 13 matches this season, Shaw has scored 10 goals for Manchester City Women.

Lucy Bronze to leave Man City as England Lionesses star is linked with move to USA

Bronze, who won FIFA's The Best Women's Player Award in 2020, is set for a crucial role with her country when England host the European Championship in July.

The Telegraph reported last week that 30-year-old Bronze has received offers from clubs in the United States and is considering a move to a team on the west coast.

She has been spending time in California this week, according to pictures posted on her Instagram account.

City said in a statement on Thursday: "Manchester City can confirm that defender Lucy Bronze will depart the club at the end of her current contract this summer.

"The defender will bring the curtain down on her second spell at the Academy Stadium and five years altogether in sky blue next month, having made 111 appearances and scored 14 goals."

Bronze has been a league and Women's FA Cup winner with City, but her greatest run of success came in a three-year spell at Lyon, where she helped the French giants land the Champions League three times.

Scotland midfielder Caroline Weir is also leaving City, the club said this week, while versatile forward Georgia Stanway has agreed to join Bayern Munich.

Man City women to host rivals Man Utd at Etihad Stadium in December

The match will take place over the weekend of December 10-11, when the Premier League will be on a mid-season break due to the men's World Cup, taking place in Qatar.

It will be the third time the Etihad has hosted a City women's game, after a 2014 clash with Everton and a derby against United.

That match, in September 2019, was won 1-0 by the hosts and drew a then-WSL record crowd of 31,213 supporters.

The news comes on the back of the success of the Women's European Championship, which has taken place in England throughout July.

England take on Germany in Sunday's final at Wembley Stadium, with UEFA anticipating a record crowd at the ground for a match at the Women's Euros.

More than twice as many fans have attended this year's tournament than the previous competition in 2017.

Prolific Reggae Girl 'Bunny' Shaw shortlisted for April's WSL Player of the Month Award

Shaw bagged five goals in three league appearances, including four in the recent 7-2 thrashing of Brighton and Hove Albion.

The other Manchester City player up for the award is Caroline Weir, who crafted Bunny's effort against West Ham in a 2-0 triumph and bagged two goals and two assists against Leicester and Brighton and Hove Albion.

Together, the pair played key roles as City finished the month with a 100 per cent record, with three league wins and an FA Cup semi-final victory over West Ham United.

The pair are up against Aston Villa's Rachel Corsie, Chelsea duo Jessie Fleming and Sam Kerr, Arsenal's Beth Mead and Birmingham's Louise Quinn.

Voting closes on May 6.

Real Madrid sink Manchester City's Women's Champions League hopes as Weir haunts old club

Scottish star Weir left City in July, and in a reunion with her old club she hit the winner in the 15th minute at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.

Three weeks after England's Euro 2022 triumph at Wembley, City had Lionesses Keira Walsh, Alex Greenwood, Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp in their starting line-up.

However, they could not force City back onto level terms, meaning that for the second successive year, two-time semi-finalists City have gone out to Madrid at the qualifying stage.

Hemp shot wide late on as City's hopes fizzled out in the Spanish capital, with Madrid going through to a final round of qualifying to determine whether they advance to the 16-team group stage, for which Lyon, Barcelona, Chelsea and Wolfsburg are the only automatic entrants.

City were also eliminated by Real Madrid in the men's Champions League last season, when a late turnaround at the Santiago Bernabeu saw Madrid rally from 5-3 behind on aggregate to snatch a 6-5 win after extra time in the semi-finals.

Shaw scores as Manchester City Women beat West Ham Women 2-0 in WSL

Shaw scored in the 63rd minute after England international Georgia Stanway opened the scoring in the eighth minute.

After the result, Shaw’s Manchester City Women find themselves fourth in the WSL table with 35 points from 18 matches, the same as Manchester United Women who are ahead of them in third on goal difference.

Chelsea Women lead the league with 41 points from 17 matches while Arsenal Women lie second with 40 points from 17 outings.

Shaw will next be in action for the Reggae Girlz on April 9th and 12th when they take on the Cayman Islands and the Dominican Republic in CONCACAF Women’s Championship Qualifying.
