It's now Dr Thompson-Herah! Elaine conferred with honorary degree by the University of Technology
This was the latest recognition of the exploits of Thompson-Herah, who earned the moniker fastest woman alive after setting an Olympic record of 10.61 while winning the 100m in Tokyo as well as winning the 200m in 21.53, also the fastest time run by a living female sprinter.
The Jamaican sprint queen lowered her personal best further on August 21, running 10.54 at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meet in Eugene, Oregon.
“I feel so overwhelmed with joy to be recognized for my work and the many blessings from the Lord,” said Thompson-Herah, a former student at UTech.
“I thank my UTech family for awarding me with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws. Thank you my fans and sponsors for always helping me to keep the flame to my fire.”
Hector Wheeler, Associate Vice President of Advancement of UTech explained that the decision to honour Thompson-Herah in this manner stems from the fact that she has now become a global icon.
“Utech, like the rest of Jamaica and the world, has noted Elaine Thompson-Herah’s significant achievements over the years. If you recall, in 2019 she was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal. This past October, she was conferred with the Order of Distinction and we are honouring her once again by conferring her with the Honorary Degree Doctor of Laws,” he said.
“She is an icon at this institution, Jamaica and the world.”
So far this year, Thompson-Herah was named World Athletics Female Athlete of the Year, NACAC Female Athlete of the Year and AW International Female Athlete of the Year. She has also been nominated as one of six candidates for the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year.
