Jamaican Olympian Oblique Seville is ready to test himself against some of the world’s best sprinters when the Grand Slam Track Series kicks off Friday night at the National Stadium in Kingston—his first serious outing since suffering an injury in the 100m final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The 24-year-old Seville is approaching the 2025 season with cautious optimism. While still in recovery, he says his strength levels have improved significantly and he feels confident heading into the high-powered meet.
“I’m in good shape because I’ve improved in the gym, which was my weakness,” Seville told SportsMax.TV at a pre-meet media session at the AC Hotel on Thursday. “So I expect something great (today), even though it’s my first race. But I won’t be too hard on myself depending on the performance—I actually feel excellent.”
Seville has already posted encouraging results this season. He ran a personal best 47.04 over 400m at the Camperdown Classic and followed that up with a controlled 20.53 in the 200m at Velocity Fest 16 on March 22, despite clearly not pushing at full throttle.
As he returns to competitive 100m action, Seville will face a stacked field that includes Olympic silver medallist Fred Kerley, European record holder Zharnel Hughes, and fellow Jamaican Ackeem Blake—a group he believes will help sharpen him for the season ahead.
“If you look at the competition, it’s basically the same guys from the Olympic final last year,” he said. “So this meet is actually a game-changer for me. It will help get me sharp for the rest of the season.”
While encouraged by his progress, Seville acknowledges that full recovery is still a work in progress.
“The season is pretty early, and strength work takes a lot of time and patience,” he said. “We’re taking things step by step, but by the end of the season, I’ll be fine.”
With a renewed focus and a deeper foundation of strength, the Jamaican star is eager to begin the next chapter of his comeback—starting tonight on home soil.
