Aquatics Sports Association of Trinidad and Tobago president Shawn Pouchet and National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAATT) boss Ephraim Serrette are optimistic that local fans will show up in full force to support the Twin Island Republic’s athletes at the upcoming Carifta Swimming and Athletics Championships.
With Trinidad and Tobago set to host both prestigious events over the Easter weekend, Pouchet and Serrette are encouraging spectators to pack the stands and make their voices heard at the Hasely Crawford Stadium and the National Aquatic Centre. The athletics championships will run from April 19-21 at Hasely Crawford Stadium, while the swimming events take place from April 19-22 at the National Aquatic Centre in Couva, with the open water swimming to bring the curtains down on the competition on April 23 in Chaguaramas.
Serrette highlighted the vibrant support other countries are bringing and urged local fans to rise to the occasion.
"The Bahamas have already booked 250 seats at the stadium. Their government provides a plane for their team to travel, which factors in their Junkanoo Band, who will also be here," Serrette said at the Carifta launch on Thursday.
"But we have to counter that. We can’t have Junkanoo coming here, and we don’t have a rhythm section. Bahamas will be here in their full contingent," he added.
Ticket prices have been set to ensure accessibility for fans, as covered stands cost $50, uncovered stands $20, and covered premium seating—which offers a prime view near the finish line—is $100. Season passes are also available for $120 (covered) and $250 (covered premium).
"We would have kept the entry fees at that level based on what would have happened at previous Cariftas," Serrette said.
Liam Carrington is among Trinidad and Tobago's medal prospects.
Pouchet anticipates thrilling performances from the athletes, as he pointed to the importance of home crowd energy.
"I think the fans can expect four days of intense competition. The kids are very focused; the team is hard at training. I know the coaching staff and the management team are working hard to ensure they are ready for competition. They are trying to make it as comfortable for them and utilize our home advantage to elevate ourselves in the standings," Pouchet said.
Ticket prices for the Carifta Aquatics Championships will mirror those for athletics.
