Clarke, Blake secure impressive wins at Velocity Fest 16

Ackeem Blake and Roshawn Clarke were the stars of the show at Saturday’s Velocity Fest 16 at Jamaica College’s Ashenheim Stadium with wins in the men’s 100m and 400m, respectively.

Dynamic Speed’s Blake continued his excellent early form this year with a swift 10.06 in his opening 100m of the season to win the A final ahead of Racers’ Zharnel Hughes (10.14) and Motorcade Track Club’s Adrian Kerr (10.29).

Nigerian Tobi Amusan, who now trains at Racers Track Club, won the women’s A final in 11.28 ahead of MVP’s Serena Cole (11.45) and Anthonique Strachan (11.46).

Olympic 100m finalist Oblique Seville took top spot in the A final of the 200m in a season’s best 20.53 ahead of Dynamic Speed’s Javari Thomas (20.82) and Elite Performance’s Nigel Ellis (21.13).

Barbadian Sada Williams took the women’s equivalent in 23.10 ahead of her MVP teammate Tia Clayton (23.11) and Elite Performance’s Kemba Nelson (23.42).

The A final of the men’s 400m saw Jamaica’s national 400m hurdles record holder Roshawn Clarke dip under 45 seconds in the 400m for the first time with a 44.98 personal best to win ahead of reigning national champion Deandre Watkin of Elite Performance (45.59) and Javier Brown of Swept Track Club (45.62).

UTECH’s Shana Kaye Anderson took the women’s equivalent in 52.20 ahead of Elite Performance’s Rushell Clayton (52.38) and Alliah Baker (54.12).

In the field, Reckless Control’s Fedrick Dacres threw 62.36m to take the win ahead of Legacy’s Chad Wright (60.60m) and Tio-Josh Mowatt (52.07) in the men’s discus.

SprinTec’s Shawn-D Thompson top spots in both the long and triple jump.

He produced a season’s best 8.02m to win the long jump ahead of GC Foster’s David Tomlinson (7.50m) and Swept TC’s Aubrey Allen (7.36m) before returning to throw down a personal best 16.61m to win the triple jump ahead of the GC Foster pair of Chevaughn Parkinson (14.66m) and Savaughney McLeod (13.84m).
