Jamaican sprinter Shashaelee Forbes says her experience competing in an individual event at the Paris Olympics has significantly boosted her confidence and left her eager for the challenges ahead in 2025. The 28-year-old, a former CAC 200m champion and Olympic relay silver medallist stepped up at the last minute to replace an injured Shericka Jackson in the 100m in Paris.

Despite the unexpected call-up, Forbes delivered commendable performances, finishing second in her heat in 11.19 to advance to the semi-finals, where she clocked 11.20 to finish sixth in her heat. Speaking with Sportsmax.TV last Friday at a ceremony honouring Jamaica’s Olympic delegation, Forbes reflected on the experience as a defining moment in her career.

“Being called upon suddenly, I was very elated. At the same time, I was also nervous, but I was glad and went out there and gave it my best,” Forbes said. “Running in an individual event at the Olympics was always my dream, and to see that I got the chance to do so—even though it was in an unfortunate situation that brought me to replace Shericka—I am really glad I did, to showcase all that.”

The Paris Olympics featured 66 Jamaican athletes, with the government recognizing their efforts by distributing JMD $45 million as a token of appreciation. Forbes expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and the impact it has had on her mindset.

“Trust me, that experience will help me a lot going forward, so I am looking forward to 2025,” she said.

Forbes, who holds a personal best of 10.96 in the 100m, has had her fair share of challenges, including injuries. However, her performance in Paris reaffirmed her belief in her capabilities and her determination to reach new heights.

“I have been injured, been down, and then got back up,” she explained. “To see that I could still go again, hit PBs, and keep representing my country—that motivated me to know that I have a lot more to give and a lot more to do.”

The sprinter credits improvements in her training regimen for her resurgence. “I just upped my background game. Fix the background, and everything is fixed,” she said, hinting at a more disciplined approach to preparation and recovery.

With renewed confidence and a clear focus, Forbes is ready to build on her Olympic experience as she heads into the 2025 season. Her journey from a last-minute call-up to competing on the world’s biggest stage has set the stage for what could be a standout year for the determined sprinter.
