Jamaican UTEP senior Niesha Burgher produced the best performance in the world so far this season to take the win in the Women’s 200m on day one at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in New Mexico on Friday.
Burgher, a 4x100m relay silver medalist at the NACAC U23 Championships in 2023, showed excellent strength and endurance on her way to an excellent 22.39 to take the win on Friday ahead of University of Oregon senior Jadyn Mays (22.57) with another Jamaican, San Diego State junior Shaquena Foote, finishing third in 23.22.
Burgher’s 22.39, a new school record, puts her just ahead of the USA’s India Mayberry on this year’s fastest times list after Mayberry ran 22.41 on February 7.
Her time also puts her third on Jamaica's all-time list behind Merlene Ottey's world record 21.87 done in 1993 and Veronica Campbell-Brown's 22.38 done in 2005.
The 22-year-old Burgher was a semifinalist in the 200m at last year’s Olympics in Paris.
