Retired Jamaican Olympian and current Marketing Manager for Running at Puma, Juliet Campbell, provided some holiday cheer for the children of East Kingston, where she grew up, with a Kids Treat and Yard Sale at the Harbour View Primary School on December 22.
The more than 250 children that turned up to the event were treated to many things that surely made their holiday all the more special.
They were able to enjoy treats like jerked chicken and bread, snacks, snow cones and popcorn as well as a number of rides.
They were also given prizes like shoes, bags and bottles from Puma as well as books from sponsors Kingston Bookshop.
Campbell was pleased with the turnout and the overall event, especially because of the short time she had to put it together.
“Better than I expected it with the amount of time that I had to get it done,” Campbell told Sportsmax.tv this week.
“It was always being planned but because of uncertainties like not knowing if I was going to get the stuff in time because of shipping and clearance,” she added.
The three-time Olympian believes that with some more planning and better utilization of resources, next year’s event will be better.
“I’ll have to utilize the businesses in the area for sponsorship or help. I had none of that. I had help from my company of course, art printery, Kingston bookshop and some private donors who are friends of mine,” she said.
Campbell says the event was able to raise something in the ballpark of $20,000 which will be donated to Harbour View Primary along with athletic equipment.
She also got positive feedback from people at the event.
“The police officers were there and they were excited about not having anything to do because the vibe was so good there. There was no stress or problems. The vendors liked it a lot and just wished more persons came,” she said.
“Everyone was ecstatic and felt good about it. The president of the community association was there so it was awesome,” she added.
