Jamaica closed out the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Nanjing, China, on a high note Sunday, with two silver medal performances—one from long jump star Wayne Pinnock and the other from the men’s 4x400m relay team.
Wayne Pinnock added yet another global silver medal to his growing résumé with a superb season-best leap of 8.29m in the men’s long jump final. The Jamaican was locked in a thrilling battle with Italy’s Mattia Furlani, who narrowly edged him out for gold with a mark of 8.30m. Australia’s Liam Adcock claimed bronze with 8.28m in a fiercely contested competition.
It was the latest chapter in Pinnock’s impressive string of podium finishes at major championships, further establishing him as one of the top horizontal jumpers in the world.
Shortly after, Jamaica’s 4x400m relay team delivered another medal-winning performance, racing to a season-best 3:05.05 to secure silver behind the United States, who clocked 3:03.13. The Jamaican quartet of Rusheen McDonald, Jasauna Dennis, Kimar Farquharson, and Demar Francis held off a strong Hungarian team that set a national record of 3:06.03 to earn bronze.
The pair of silver medals brought Jamaica’s campaign in Nanjing to a strong finish and continued the country’s proud tradition of excellence on the global stage in both individual and relay events.
