Jamaica's vice-captain Damion Lowe, fresh off his encounter with Cristiano Ronaldo in a Saudi Pro League match on Thursday, shared his thoughts on facing two of football’s greatest legends as he also reflected on rubbing shoulders with Lionel Messi.

Lowe, who has competed against both stars, credits Messi as the more challenging opponent of the two. He faced Messi twice during his career—the 2023 MLS season when his former team, the Philadelphia Union, played against Inter Miami, and during an international friendly between Jamaica and Argentina in 2022.

Reflecting on these moments, Lowe highlighted the qualities that set both players apart.

“Facing Messi and Ronaldo is something every footballer dreams of, and I’ve been fortunate to do so. It’s an honour to test myself against the best,” Lowe said.

“For me, Messi is the tougher opponent. With Messi, you can’t stop him. Ronaldo’s athleticism can be matched now that he isn’t at his peak, but Messi? He’s still quick and silky smooth. You don’t train for how good he is—it’s pure, raw talent," he added.

Despite his praise for Messi, Lowe also acknowledged the enduring brilliance of Ronaldo, who will turn 40 on February 5.

“Even as he’s gotten older, he remains a physical marvel and a clinical finisher. But Messi? You just have to pray he has an off day because he’s unstoppable,” Lowe remarked.

As a cornerstone of Jamaican football, Lowe’s insights provide a unique perspective on the challenges of defending against two players who have defined an era of the sport.

Known for his commanding presence in defence, Lowe has built an exceptional career, representing Jamaica on over 70 occasions and competing in top leagues across the United States, Europe, Africa, and now the Middle East.
