For West Ham United and Reggae Boyz striker Michail Antonio, the turn of the year brought a perspective-shifting moment of clarity, gratitude, and resolve after he survived a horrific motor vehicle accident.
The 34-year-old, known for his electrifying performances on the pitch, shared an emotional post on Instagram shortly after being discharged from the hospital, where he underwent surgery for a broken leg following the crash.
“Every year around this time, I’m asked what I’m grateful for, and every year I’ve struggled to find the right words,” Antonio wrote.
“But this year, I know exactly what I’m grateful for: being alive,” he declared, as the December 7 accident in which he was trapped in his wrangled Ferrari FF left him in need of urgent medical attention.
Antonio's heartfelt post not only detailed how emergency services, the NHS, The Air Ambulance, and hospital staff at Royal London and Cromwell worked tirelessly to save his life, but also reflected on the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment.
“I want to take a moment to acknowledge something I’ve come to realize. I’ve spent so many years taking life for granted... always assuming tomorrow was guaranteed,” Antonio stated.
“What I’ve been through recently has opened my eyes. Life is fragile, and every single moment matters,” he admitted.
On that note, Antonio was effusive in expressing gratitude, as he acknowledged the unwavering support and collective efforts of his loved ones, medical professionals, his club, teammates, and the football community, which he described as a cornerstone of his recovery.
“To the emergency services, the NHS, The Air Ambulance, everyone at the Royal London and Cromwell hospitals, and everyone from top to bottom at West Ham United FC... I honestly could not have got through this without you,” he shared.
"To my loved ones who stood by my side throughout everything, I can’t express how much you mean to me. To the whole football community, thank you for all the love and support you’ve shown me. It has truly meant the world,” Antonio added.
Though he still has some ways to go in his recovery, Antonio promises to return to the sport he loves. But, while fans await that much-anticipated return, Antonio’s resilience to bounce back from and, by extension, his outlook on the horrific experience have already made an indelible mark, both on and off the pitch.
“Happy New Year—and I’ll be back on that pitch soon,” he ended.
