Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has confirmed that Lionel Messi will make the trip to Jamaica for Thursday’s Concacaf Champions Cup return leg against Cavalier FC. However, whether the Argentine superstar will take the field remains uncertain.
"Leo is in the squad. He is going to travel, and tomorrow we will decide on the day of the game what is best—whether he starts or waits and comes on later. We will see how it goes,” Mascherano said during a media briefing on Wednesday.
“Today he trained with the group. He did the whole session and felt very good,” he added.
Messi has missed Inter Miami’s last three matches as he recovers from early-season fatigue. If he plays on Thursday, it will be his first game in 15 days, since his last appearance on February 25.
Inter Miami holds a 2-0 aggregate lead heading into the clash at Jamaica National Stadium in Kingston. The match kicks off at 7:00pm.
