Manchester United were indebted to Amad Diallo after his unexpected hat-trick inspired an unlikely turnaround against Southampton.

Amad Diallo produced a remarkable late hat-trick as Manchester United came from behind to beat struggling Southampton 3-1.

United seemed destined for a fourth straight Premier League home defeat after Manuel Ugarte turned Tyler Dibling's flick-on past Andre Onana on the stroke of half-time.

However, Diallo – who levelled late on in United's 2-2 draw with Liverpool last time out in the league – started the comeback when steering under Aaron Ramsdale with eight minutes remaining.

Diallo edged United ahead with another goal in the 90th minute when volleying from Christian Eriksen's neat dink, before the winger profited from Taylor Harwood-Bellis' error to roll into an empty net four minutes later.

Those heroics from United's 22-year-old saw Ruben Amorim avoid a humiliating defeat to the league's bottom side, while Diallo spared the blushes of Antony after his teammate's inexplicable miss on the hour from Alejandro Garnacho's left-sided cross.

The victory lifted United to 12th in the table, while Southampton – who still have just one win across the entire 2024-25 campaign – remain 10 points adrift of safety at the bottom of the league.

Data Debrief: United's new hero Diallo

It appeared Amorim was facing an uphill battle after Ugarte became the first United player to score an own goal at Old Trafford in the Premier League since Raphael Varane against Leeds United in February 2023.

In fact, only Leicester City (seven) have gone in behind at half-time in more Premier League home games this season than United's six, though the hosts were saved by their new hero.

Diallo became the third player in Premier League history to score three times in the final 10 minutes of a game, joining two United greats as the only players to achieve the feat.

Indeed, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer managed to do so against Nottingham Forest in February 1999 before Wayne Rooney turned the screw late on against Hull City in January 2010.

Diallo will be the toast of the red side of Manchester on Thursday, having become United's youngest-ever hat-trick scorer at Old Trafford in the competition.
