West Indies captain Rovman Powell did not mince words about his team’s underwhelming performances in the ongoing T20 International series against Bangladesh, as they lost the second contest by 27 runs on Tuesday.
By virtue of that loss, the West Indies conceded the three-match series, as the visitors hold an unassailable 2-0 lead heading into Thursday’s final encounter.
The series defeat, Bangladesh’s first T20I series victory over the West Indies in six years, is a bitter blow for a regional side that has long prided itself on its prowess in the shortest format of the game. It is also the West Indies’ second consecutive T20 series loss at home, coming on the heels of a 3-1 defeat to England last month.
Chasing 148 in the first T20I on Sunday, Powell’s side managed just 140, falling seven runs short, and their struggles continued in Tuesday’s encounter, where the team collapsed to a dismal 102 all out while chasing a modest 129-run target.
Powell, peeved by the fact that the batting lineup faltered under pressure in both matches, acknowledged the team’s recurring struggles at the top of the order.
“It has become something of major concern now, where we keep on during the duration of the game making the same mistakes. It is something that needs rectifying at the moment,” Powell said candidly.
While he admitted the pitch offered something for the bowlers, Powell was unequivocal in his assessment of the team’s failure to chase a below-par total.
“I think it [the pitch] had a little more in it for the bowlers, but having said that, not being able to chase 129 is not good, and it’s not good enough at this level,” he stated.
Questions have been raised about the team’s composition and the decision to stick with the same XI after Sunday’s loss. However, Powell defended the move, as he pointed to the need to show confidence in players.
“I think you have to show faith and courage in guys. Keep chopping and changing won’t be the answer,” Powell explained.
“It’s guys playing and making mistakes and learning from those mistakes. It’s just a case of us trying and hoping that guys won’t make the same mistakes over and over,” he added.
The series loss underscores deeper challenges for the West Indies in T20 cricket. Once seen as a dominant force in the format, the team now faces growing scrutiny as inconsistency and recurring errors continue to plague their performances.
With one match remaining in the failed campaign, Powell and his team will aim to salvage some pride and give their fans a reason to cheer. Still, the captain’s argued that significant improvements are needed if the West Indies are to reclaim their status as a powerhouse in T20 cricket.
“It’s just not good enough,” Powell said in a blunt assessment that sums it up best.
