Le'Veon Bell

Bell excited to reinvent himself after teaming up with Mahomes and Chiefs

Bell was cut by the New York Jets last week – less than halfway through the four-year, $52.5million contract he signed as a marquee free agent in 2019.

The three-time Pro Bowler and running back is now a member of the Chiefs after signing a one-year deal in Kansas City, where he will team up with former MVP and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes.

Bell is determined to return to his best, having averaged 3.3 yards per carry and four total touchdowns in 17 games for the Jets following his arrival at the end of 2018.

"I played at a high level for so long," Bell said on Wednesday. "I had two years [with the Jets] where it has not been a high level, and people kind of look at it like that.

"So I wanted to get here, get my feet back under me, get in a good offense, get the ball when I can [and] not have too much pressure on me, just play football.

"I think coming here will give me the opportunity to do that. There are a lot of [good] players. I don't necessarily have to worry about how many times I'm touching it."

After sitting out the 2018 season due to a contract dispute with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bell moved to the Jets and struggled to reach his lofty heights.

Bell was reportedly unhappy about his usage in the Jets' offense and, following the 30-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5, liked tweets suggesting he be traded.

The All-Pro spent three weeks on injured reserve after suffering a hamstring injury in the Jets' opening loss at the Buffalo Bills.

Bell added: "I never played with a player MVP-wise."

"It was just undeniable to try to come here to help this team any way I can help them out," Bell said. "When I decided to come here, I already knew the weapons, and there's only one football to kind of go around.

"I think there's going to be a lot of opportunity to kind of show what I can do in space, running routes. I think this offense is a good fit for my skill set. I think coach [Andy] Reid does a good job of getting backs the ball in space. I'm glad I've got this opportunity."

Bell has had over 1,200 rushing yards in three separate seasons, but the last of those was in 2017.

Since entering the league as the 48th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, Bell has rushed for 6,199 yards and 38 touchdowns, while receiving for 3,160 yards and eight TDs.

Chiefs quarterback Mahomes – preparing for Sunday's clash against the Denver Broncos – said: "He's a mismatch coming out of the backfield. The way he's able to run routes, the way he's able to split out and basically be a receiver out there is pretty special.

"He's going to get a lot of matchups I don't think he's had recently with a lot of linebackers on him, and I'm sure he's pretty excited about that."

Bills have 'looked into' signing Le'Veon Bell

Bell was on Tuesday cut by the New York Jets less than halfway through the four-year, $52.5million contract he signed as a marquee free agent arrival in 2019.

According to reports, the All-Pro running back is expected to land with either the Bills, Miami Dolphins or Kansas City Chiefs.

McDermott confirmed he had discussed Bell's situation with general manager Brandon Beane but would not disclose anything more.

"You know Brandon and I, we always look into every situation, this being one of them," said McDermott.

"We're trying to improve our football team. That's as much as I can tell you now."

Asked for his general thoughts on the 4-1 Bills' running game this season, he added: "I think we can be better in a lot of areas - that being one of them, our ability to run the football. We've got to be able to be balanced as much as we can in games."

After sitting out the 2018 season due to a contract dispute with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bell joined the Jets and averaged 3.3 yards per carry and four total touchdowns in 17 games.

The three-time Pro Bowler was reportedly unhappy about his usage in the Jets' offense and, following the 30-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5, liked tweets suggesting he be traded.

Bell spent three weeks on injured reserve after suffering a hamstring injury in the Jets' opening loss at Buffalo.

The 28-year-old has had over 1,200 rushing yards in three separate seasons, but the last of those was in 2017.

The Bills play the Jets again at MetLife Stadium on October 25.

Brady exit leaves AFC East 'wide open' – Jets RB Gore

Brady swapped the New England Patriots for the Buccaneers in the NFC South via free agency after a glorious 20-year run and six Super Bowl rings in Foxborough.

The Patriots have won 11 consecutive division titles – and three Super Bowl championships during that period – thanks to superstar quarterback Brady.

But Gore feels the balance of power has shifted in the AFC East, where the Jets, Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins are looking to dethrone the Patriots.

"It's wide open," the 37-year-old said via a videoconference call with reporters on Thursday. "Brady's gone, and it's wide open.

"You've got young quarterbacks, Sam Darnold and Josh [Allen]. I don't know what Miami is doing or whatever. I think it's wide open."

Gore is preparing for his first year with the Jets after brief spells with the Bills and Dolphins.

The five-time Pro Bowler has reunited with head coach Adam Gase following the pair's time together in Miami, while the latter's relationship with star Le'Veon Bell has dominated headlines.

Bell struggled during his first season in New York and Gase is looking to lighten the workload for the three-time Pro Bowler.

On Bell, Gore said: "I told him I need a jersey to put on my wall just because I respect his game. I respect the way he prepares himself to get ready for the season.... He always respected me; I respected him.

"It will be fun. I've been around a bunch of talented running backs my whole career -- college, the NFL. I'm going to do whatever it takes to help him, to help the other guys and also help the team be successful."

"I'm cool," Gore added. "I'm happy to be playing this game at my age. I'm happy that this organisation is giving me an opportunity. I'm just coming in to work and help all the young guys, and show them young guys I still can play. Whenever I get my number called, I'll just try to go out and make a play for our team to be successful. I'm very excited."

Bucs poised to sign Bell to replace injured Fournette

Fournette sustained a hamstring injury in the Super Bowl champions' surprise 9-0 loss to divisional rivals the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

He is expected to be placed on injured reserve and miss the rest of the regular season but should return in time for the playoffs.

Per reports from NFL.com and ESPN, the Bucs – who have a 10-4 record – will now turn to Bell, who will support Ronald Jones in filling the void left by Fournette.

Bell has been without a team since being released by the Baltimore Ravens last month and will sign pending a physical examination, which will take place on Wednesday.

The two-time first-team All-Pro played in just five games for the Ravens this season, rushing for 83 yards and two touchdowns.

He is best known for a successful five-year spell with the Pittsburgh Steelers to start his career.

After taking a year out of the NFL amid a contract dispute with the Steelers, he went on to join the New York Jets and also spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020.

The man he is replacing, Fournette, sits in a tie for ninth in the NFL with eight rushing touchdowns in 2021, while his 812 yards on the ground put him 11th.

Fournette is also yet to fumble in 171 attempts this season.

The Bucs will look to bounce back from their loss to the Saints with another divisional game as they play on the road against the Carolina Panthers on Boxing Day.

Tom Brady's team remain three games clear of the Saints atop the NFC South in their ongoing bid to repeat as Super Bowl winners.

Jets activate star RB Le'Veon Bell from IR

Bell landed on IR last month after injuring his hamstring in the Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills in the NFL, but the three-time Pro Bowler has recovered.

The 28-year-old, who missed three consecutive games, resumed practice this week after he was designated to return on Wednesday.

"He did a good job of, one, getting healthy and then staying in good shape," Jets head coach Adam Gase said on Saturday. "Did a good job making sure that he maintained where his weight was.

"It's pretty easy, especially when you have a hamstring issue to where you can't do what you're normally used to doing, he did a great job as far as making sure he stayed right where he was at when he got hurt. I think he feels even better now than he did when we kind of hit that first game."

Bell rushed six times for 14 yards against the Bills and had two receptions for 32 yards prior to the injury.

The struggling Jets – who will be without injured quarterback Sam Darnold – will be hoping Bell can spark the team following a 0-4 start to the season.

Jets may look to lighten the load on Le'Veon Bell - Adam Gase

Having held out in 2018 in search of a new contract from the Pittsburgh Steelers that never came, Bell signed with the Jets last offseason.

However, the three-time Pro Bowler’s maiden campaign with the Jets proved a disappointment.

Bell averaged just 3.2 yards per carry, the lowest mark of his career, as the Jets finished 7-9 in Gase's first season as head coach, missing the playoffs for the ninth consecutive year.

The Jets selected Lamical Perine out of Florida in the fourth round of the draft and also have Josh Adams and Kenneth Dixon as viable reserve options at running back.

Indicating he may make greater use of that depth to aid Bell, Gase told ESPN's Flight Deck podcast: "I do think we have some guys that can help maybe lessen the load on [Bell] to where it's not all on him.

"Hopefully, we can get some of the younger backs to where we can make a good one-two punch to where we can really excel instead of feeling like it's just all on him all the time."

Jets general manager Joe Douglas made moves to improve the offensive line and Gase believes those additions, plus the acquisitions of two talented downfield receivers in Breshad Perriman and second-round rookie Denzel Mims, can also make Bell's life easier.

"If you have the vertical threats like I think we're going to have with the wide receivers now, hey, maybe we'll start seeing two-high zone [coverage] instead of them just focusing on one guy in the receiving corps," Gase added.

"You've got [tight end] Chris Herndon back. You've got [tight end] Ryan Griffin. You've got some guys who can do some different things there and stretch the field vertically.

"That was something Chris was really good at. Now, all of a sudden, Le'Veon is seeing lighter boxes, which he didn't see a lot last year. We saw loaded boxes for the most part. We didn't do a good enough job winning in the passing game to open some of that stuff up.

"When you're a running back and you're constantly seeing seven, eight-man boxes, that can be frustrating."

Jets not discussing Bell trade, says GM Douglas

Bell signed a four-year, $52.2million deal to join the Jets following a contract dispute with the Pittsburgh Steelers, however, he struggled to make an impact in New York.

The three-time NFL Pro Bowler has been the subject of trade speculation, though Douglas attempted to play down the rumours on Tuesday.

"There hasn't been talk as far as him going anywhere," said Douglas, who revealed the Jets want to sign All-Pro safety Jamal Adams to a contract extension. "We're excited about Le'Veon.

"Le'Veon has been a great team-mate. I can't tell you how great he's been... We're excited to have him."

Bell rushed for just 789 yards and three touchdowns as the Jets finished 7-9 for the season.

"I wouldn't say his play declined," Douglas said. "His numbers probably aren't where he would want them to be. I think we need to do a better job of opening holes for him.

"We need to put him in a good position to be as productive as he was in Pittsburgh."

Jets head coach Adam Gase and his relationship with Bell has been talked about, with the former previously refusing to say he wants the running back in 2020.

On Tuesday, Gase said: "He's been great for us. He's done everything I've asked him to do. He tried to do things the right way. What anybody else says, I think we're to the point where we really don't care. As long as our relationship is good, we're good."

Jets place Bell on IR with hamstring injury

Bell, a two-time first-team All-Pro, is eligible to return to action in three weeks.

He had just 14 yards on six carries as the Jets were beaten 27-17 by the Buffalo Bills in their season opener last Sunday.

Rookie wide receiver Denzel Mims (hamstring) and linebacker Blake Cashman (groin) have also been placed on IR.

The Jets signed running back Kalen Ballage in a corresponding transaction, though Frank Gore is likely to get the bulk of the workload in the coming weeks.

Gore and the Jets face his former team, the San Francisco 49ers, on Sunday in their home opener at MetLife Stadium.

Jets release RB Le'Veon Bell

Bell was signed by the Jets on a four-year, $52.5million contract in March 2019, but he struggled under head coach Adam Gase.

The 28-year-old returned from a hamstring injury on Sunday as the Jets fell to 0-5 after a 30-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Much to the frustration of Gase, Bell liked tweets saying the Jets should trade him, and that they should have targeted him more against the Cardinals.

The Jets announced on Tuesday they had released Bell, having tried to trade the three-time Pro Bowler.

"After having conversations with Le'Veon and his agent and exploring potential trade options over the past couple of days, we have made the decision to release Le'Veon," Jets general manager Joe Douglas said.

"The Jets organisation appreciates Le'Veon's efforts during his time here and we know he worked hard to make significant contributions to this team.

"We believe this decision is in the best interests of both parties and wish him future success."

Bell played just 17 games for the Jets, finishing with three rushing touchdowns and 863 yards, as well as 500 receiving yards and one TD.

He previously starred across five seasons with Pittsburgh and he could reportedly return to the Steelers.

Jets to start Flacco again as Gase reflects on Bell release

The woeful Jets are 0-5 after Flacco played in the absence of Darnold (shoulder) in a 30-10 home loss to the Arizona Cardinals last week.

Flacco will have another opportunity on the road against the 2-3 Dolphins, with the Jets unwilling to take any risks with their starter in a lost season.

"There's no doubt none of us would say he's anything but tough, but we just want to make sure he's good before we put him out there," under-pressure coach Adam Gase said about Darnold, who is targeting a Week 7 return against the Buffalo Bills.

"He is better than what he was last week. The more time you give him, the better he'll feel. He is taking the steps that we need him to take to give us an opportunity to take into next week. We'll make that decision when we get there.

"He is doing a good job of communicating and letting us know how he feels. He's being honest in terms of his pain tolerance, his range of motion, him being able to work on his throwing motion a little bit. He's a quick healer."

Flacco threw for 195 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions against the Cardinals, completing 18 of 33 passes.

Between Darnold and Flacco, the Jets rank last in the NFL with their average of 176 passing yards per game.

While there have been issues with injuries and the level of talent around him, Darnold has struggled, throwing for three TDs and four picks through the first four games before suffering an injury against the Denver Broncos.

Per the NFL's NextGen Stats, his season completion percentage of 59.4 per cent is below its expected level, putting him third-worst in the NFL among qualifying QBs, while his passer rating (70.7) is only above that of Daniel Jones and Carson Wentz.

The offense did not get much help when the decision was made to release unsettled running back Le'Veon Bell, midway through his second season after signing a lucrative four-year contract.

Bell had been unhappy with his usage by Gase, who has opted to continue calling plays against the Dolphins having pondered giving them up amid intense speculation over his job security.

However, he was reluctant to go into much detail when asked to reflect on the release of Bell.

"It's irrelevant at this point," said Gase. "It didn't work out. It didn't work out. We're going to focus on this game right now.

"For whatever reason it didn't work out. Our team is moving forward to Miami, that's the number one concern for us right now.

"I'm sure he'll get an opportunity somewhere else. We'll see what happens. We've got to coach better. We've got to play better. And that's really the entire team."

A rare positive for the Jets has been the form of wide receiver Jamison Crowder, who leads the NFL with his average of 111.7 yards per game after reaching the 100-yard mark in all three games he has played.

Crowder is averaging eight yards after the catch, 3.2 above his expected total. Only Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Chase Claypool (4.4 yards over expectation) is faring better in that category among NFL receivers.

Le'Veon Bell set to join Mahomes' Chiefs

Bell was cut by the New York Jets on Tuesday – less than halfway through the four-year, $52.5million contract he signed as a marquee free agent in 2019.

Reports linked All-Pro RB Bell to the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and Chiefs.

On Thursday, Bell told ESPN that he intends to join Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in Kansas City.

Bell will have the chance to reunite with the Jets (0-5) when the Chiefs (4-1) and the struggling New York franchise meet in Week 8.

After sitting out the 2018 season due to a contract dispute with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bell moved to the Jets and averaged 3.3 yards per carry and four total touchdowns in 17 games.

The three-time Pro Bowler was reportedly unhappy about his usage in the Jets' offense and, following the 30-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5, liked tweets suggesting he be traded.

Bell – who is reportedly signing a one-year deal with the Chiefs – spent three weeks on injured reserve after suffering a hamstring injury in the Jets' opening loss at Buffalo.

The 28-year-old has had over 1,200 rushing yards in three separate seasons, but the last of those was in 2017.

Since entering the league as the 48th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, Bell has rushed for 6,199 yards and 38 touchdowns, while receiving for 3,160 yards and eight TDs.

Le'Veon Bell set to make Ravens debut against Broncos

Bell – a multi-time All-Pro and Pro-Bowl running back – joined the Ravens on September 7 and is set to play for Baltimore for the first time when they face the unbeaten Denver Broncos on Sunday.

If Bell does matchup against the Broncos, it would be his first game since appearing for the Kansas City Chiefs in their Divisional Round clash with the Cleveland Browns last season.

Bell had two carries for six yards in a Kansas City win, while he was also active for Super Bowl LV but did not play as Tom Brady's Tampa Bay Buccaneers reigned supreme.

The former Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets RB tallied 64 carries for 254 yards and two scores, as well as 13 receptions for 99 yards, in nine regular-season appearances for the Chiefs.

Baltimore (2-1) defeated the Detroit Lions 19-17 last week behind Justin Tucker's record-setting, 66-yard field goal as time expired.

Tucker is a perfect 21-for-21 in his career when kicking to tie the game or take the lead in the last minute of the fourth quarter or in overtime – six of his last seven such kicks have come from over 45 yards.

Baltimore and Denver (3-0) have split their 12 meetings all-time, but the home team is 10-2 in this series.

The Ravens' lone road win against the Broncos came in Week 3 of 2001 (20-13), which happened to be Hall-of-Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe's only career game played in Denver as an opposing player.

Le'Veon Bell to make professional boxing debut against ex-UFC fighter Uriah Hall

Bell, a two-time first-team All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowl selection who ran for 6,554 yards in 96 games over an eight-year NFL career, will enter the four-round bout in Glendale, Arizona after recording a knockout of fellow former NFL running back Adrian Peterson in the fifth round of an exhibition on September 10.

"As soon as Most Valuable Promotions approached me about joining the Paul-Silva pay-per-view, I told them I want in and didn't care who the opponent was," the 30-year-old Bell said.

"Uriah Hall is going to feel my punching power and tap out like he's getting submitted. He is not built like me."

Hall, 38, spent nine years in the UFC before announcing his retirement from mixed martial arts in August after his second straight loss. This will also be his professional boxing debut.

Hall finished with a 17-11 record in MMA, and his eight knockouts/technical knockouts matched Anderson Silva and Thiago Silva for the most in UFC middleweight history.

"Le'Veon Bell, I hope you bring your best," Hall said. "I know I will."

Multiple NFL teams cancel practice following Jacob Blake shooting

The New York Jets, Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, Washington Football Team and Los Angeles Chargers were among those not to take to the field.

It comes amid widespread protests in the Unites States following the shooting of Blake, who was repeatedly shot in the back by police on Sunday.

His father said he has been left paralysed from the waist down.

Washington were the first to cancel practice, their decision coming shortly after the Milwaukee Bucks boycotted Game 5 of their first-round NBA Eastern Conference series against the Orlando Magic.

All of Wednesday and Thursday's NBA playoff games were postponed.

The Cardinals were among those to cancel their practice entirely, with head coach Kliff Kingsbury later addressing the media to explain the decision.

"What happened to Jacob Blake was horrendous and it has to stop," he said.

"I know it sounds hollow at times because you hear the same things over and over, but we wanted to make sure our players know that we support them and we're here for them.

"There's time where football takes a backburner and we felt like this was one of those moments as an organisation.

"We wanted our players to know that we support them and want them to have a day to be with their families, be able to reflect on things, be around friends, be around each other and then use the day to help make that change the way to see.

"Whether it's on social media, using that platform that they have, or if it's going to register to vote or trying to get other people set up to register to vote, we just wanted them to know this is their day and I felt like it was important to our organisation."

Cardinals running back Kenyan Drake wrote on Twitter: "We have the day off today to educate and reflect on who we are as individuals and here we need to progress as people.

"I'm honoured to be in an organisation of men and women who lead the charge for change in this country."

Jets running back Le'Veon Bell appeared to send a message to the NFL when he wrote: "We've been protecting the shield. It's time for the shield to protect us."

New Orleans Saints players did take to the field, with each player wearing a helmet with Blake's name written on it.

The Pittsburgh Steelers also practiced, and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger told reporters: "Everyone has the choice to choose to what level and what degree they want to use their platform.

"I think the biggest thing right now is to listen to my African-American team-mates and friends that aren't even in football just to get a better understanding to educate myself."

NFL Talking Point: Can Le'Veon Bell turn the Chiefs' running game around?

Bell arrives in Kansas City having been released by the New York Jets, who had attempted to trade the running back.

He joins a backfield that has endured a difficult start to the season despite the Chiefs taking running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire with their first-round pick in the draft this year.

Here we assess Edwards-Helaire's performance to this point, if the Chiefs need Bell and whether he can turn their running game around.

EDWARDS-HELAIRE STRUGGLING TO MEET EXPECTATIONS

Much was expected of Edwards-Helaire when the LSU star was selected by the Chiefs with the final pick of the first round.

It was a move seen by many as stacking the deck further in the favour of the most explosive offense in the NFL.

Edwards-Helaire's debut performance did little to dispel that notion as he rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown in the season-opening win over the Houston Texans.

However, he is averaging under four yards a carry in the last four games, providing scant indication he has improved the running game.

METRICS MAKE DIFFICULT READING

Edwards-Helaire's struggles are illustrated by his performance in Rushing Yards Over Expected (RYOE).

RYOE is an NFL NextGen Stats metric that measures the difference between actual rushing yards and expected rushing yards on a play or series of plays.

The rookie is average minus 0.15 RYOE per attempt and is facing eight-man boxes on 14.81 per cent of his carries.

To contextualise that, Raheem Mostert of the San Francisco 49ers leads the NFL with 2.94 RYOE per attempt and has faced eight-man boxes on 20.59 per cent of his carries.

In other words, teams are more frequently loading up to stop Mostert, a former undrafted free agent, than they are Edwards-Helaire and the Niners starter is still gaining over three yards RYOE more than the Chiefs rookie.

Much of Mostert's success in that regard is because of his speed. He leads all running backs in yards before first contact per attempt with an average of 5.4.

Edwards-Helaire is not blessed with the same pace, with his game much more reliant on evading defenders and breaking tackles.

Yet Edwards-Helaire has not really excelled at shrugging off defenders either, he is 16th among qualifying players with 2.4 yards after contact per attempt and averages a broken tackle every nine carries (13th in the NFL).

It is early, but at this stage Edwards-Helaire has not lived up to the billing. So, will Bell's arrival help?

BELL FAILS TO TAKE FLIGHT

When he elected to sit out the entire 2018 season after being franchise-tagged by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bell was regarded as one of the best and most versatile running backs in the game.

His star has fallen considerably since then. Bell's spell with the Jets could hardly have gone worse and he averaged minus 0.41 RYOE per attempt in 2019.

Bell also ranked last among 47 qualifiers in yards before contact per attempt with a paltry 1.2 and was 32nd in yards after contact (two yards per attempt).

The two-time All-Pro would probably make the case that his struggles were as much down to the lack of talent around him on the Jets' offense as his own standard of play.

There is credence to that argument. The Jets ranked 29th in total offense last year and things have declined further in that regard this season.

Even if Bell is not the running threat he once was, the numbers suggest he can provide the Chiefs with yet another weapon in the passing game.

PASSING GAME UPSIDE

Edwards-Helaire has lived up to expectations in terms of being a valuable receiving threat out of the backfield.

The rookie has caught 17 of his 27 targets from Mahomes for 169 yards, an average of 9.9. yards per reception.

While Bell has seemingly experienced a steep decline since his exit from Pittsburgh, he too remains a threat as a pass-catcher.

He caught 66 of his 78 targets in 2019 for 461 yards and a touchdown, posting an impressive average of seven yards per reception in his sole full season in New York.

The pass-catching prowess of Edwards-Helaire and Bell gives the creative mind of Andy Reid the option of using both as receivers out of the backfield, adding another potential string to the bow of one of the league's most diverse offenses.

DO THE CHIEFS NEED A RUNNING THREAT?

Given the proficiency of the Chiefs' passing attack and Mahomes' ability to lead them back from almost any deficit, some may question whether they even need a viable running game.

Mahomes led Kansas City back from three successive double-digit deficits during their playoff run to Super Bowl LIV glory last season.

However, it should not be forgotten that key to their success was running back Damien Williams, who was in the Super Bowl MVP conversation for his efforts in the 31-20 win over the 49ers.

Williams was fifth in the NFL with 0.75 RYOE per attempt in 2019 and tied Derrick Henry for the NFL lead with 3.2 yards after contact per carry.

He opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns and, through five games, the Chiefs do not look like replacing his impact.

Bell's brief time with the Jets did little to suggest he can help in that regard but, on a short-term deal, it is worth the Chiefs taking a low risk to see if he can rediscover some of his Steelers form and provide the crucial support to help Edwards-Helaire's career take off.

Veteran NFL RBs Adrian Peterson and Le'Veon Bell sign up for exhibition boxing bout

The veteran running backs are due to face off in the squared circle at Los Angeles' Crypto.com Arena on July 30.

Bell, a three-time Pro Bowler, made the announcement on social media.

"[And] it's official nothing else needs to be said, let's gooo," Bell, 30, posted on Twitter, accompanied with a poster promoting the bout.

Peterson is not officially retired from the NFL but made just four appearances for the Tennessee Titans and Seattle Seahawks in the 2021 season.

The 37-year-old became a star name during a 10-year stint with the Minnesota Vikings and was named MVP in 2012 - a campaign where he became the seventh player to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.

Peterson ranks fifth on the NFL's career rushing yards list with 14,918 and is a seven-time Pro Bowler.

Like Peterson, Bell has not officially hung up the cleats but has struggled to find a permanent home since leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2018. Last season, he made eight appearances for the Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

ESPN reported the fight will take place on the undercard of Social Gloves 2, an event promoted by YouTube star Austin McBroom.
