Though a prominent player at international level, the forward was best known for his lengthy association with Vasco da Gama.
Save for a brief spell with Barcelona in the middle of his career, he spent his entire playing tenure in Brazil, and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) offered a tribute to him across the weekend.
"With regret, the CBF mourns the death of Roberto Dinamite, one of the greatest athletes in Brazilian football," it wrote in a statement.
"For the Brazilian national team, the former player scored 25 goals and was top scorer in Brazil's [second-place campaign at] the 1983 Copa America.
"He also played in the 1978 and 1982 World Cups. You will always be part of our football history. Thanks for everything, Roberto. Rest in peace."
CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues also offered his condolences, adding: "Roberto Dinamite was one of the greatest players in the history of our football.
"In addition to joining Vasco's beautiful history, he enchanted football fans all over the world. The CBF sympathises with the goalscorer's family and fans."
Roberto Dinamite holds the record as all-time top scorer in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A, Brazil's top flight, with 190 goals.
His passing comes just under a fortnight following the death of fellow Selecao legend Pele, who passed away aged 82 last month.

"We thank everybody for the huge amount of support received during these difficult times and ask for respect to the privacy of family and friends in this moment of grief."

Lukoki came through the ranks at Dutch giants Ajax before spells with PEC Zwolle, Bulgarian club Ludogorets and Turkish side Yeni Malatyaspor.
The 29-year-old, who won three Eredivisie titles with Ajax, signed for FC Twente on a two-year deal last June but suffered a cruciate ligament injury in pre-season training.
Lukoki had his contract terminated by Twente in February for what the club described as "events in his personal life".
Twente confirmed the passing of Lukoki on Monday in a statement that read: "This morning FC Twente received the terrible news that Jody Lukoki has passed away.
"The club is shocked and deeply moved by this tragic event. FC Twente sympathises with his loved ones and wishes them a lot of strength in processing this great loss."
Zwolle also paid tribute: "PEC Zwolle has learned with dismay and sadness of the far too early death of former player Jody Lukoki.
"Lukoki will forever be remembered as PEC Zwolle's first goalscorer in an official European game. PEC Zwolle wishes the relatives of Jody Lukoki a lot of strength to bear this enormous loss."
While Turkish side Yeni Malatyaspor added: "We learned with sadness the news that Jody Lukoki, who wore our club's jersey in the 2020-2021 Super League season, passed away.
"Our condolences to his family and community."
Lukoki represented the Netherlands at youth international level but opted to play for DR Congo, who he made his senior debut for in 2015.
All three caps for the Leopards came in friendly matches, with his last coming against Burkina Faso in 2020.
Vitalii Sapylo was a former Karpaty Lviv youth player, while Dmytro 'Dima' Martynenko played for regional side FC Gostomel.
The global players' union, FIFPRO, expressed its sorrow at the losses.
It said: "Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and team-mates of young Ukrainian footballers Vitalii Sapylo (21) and Dmytro Martynenko (25), football's first reported losses in this war. May they both rest in peace."
Karpaty announced the death of Sapylo, saying in a statement: "On Friday, February 25, a pupil of our school Vitalii Sapylo died near Kyiv. Sincere condolences to the family. Eternal memory of the hero!"
Sapylo was reportedly a tank commander who died in conflict with Russian forces while defending Kyiv.
Ukrainian media cited a report on the Kyiv-Sviatoshynskyi football federation Facebook page in announcing the death of Martynenko, stating he and his mother died after their house was hit by a bomb.

The Russian giants confirmed the tragic news on Monday after Samokhvalov suffered suspected heart failure.
Samokhvalov – who had been playing for Lokomotiv's reserve team Kazanka in the third division – was training solo amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Paes said the road known as the Avenida Radial Oeste – West Radial Avenue – would be named Avenida Pele, and declared it would be confirmed formally by the city on Wednesday.
That led to suggestions the renaming did not go far enough, however, and that the road should instead be titled Avenida Rei Pele – King Pele Avenue.
Paes did not disagree, asking his 691,000 followers: "What do you think?"

That is a vertical, high-rise cemetery, with Pele due to be laid to rest on its ninth floor, at a site that overlooks the Vila Belmiro.
Santos City Hall said over 230,000 people had filed past Pele's coffin while it lay at the stadium, and crowds gathered outside as it left.
The cortege travelled along the beach front, with his coffin resting on top of a fire engine, draped in a Brazil flag.
Many walked alongside and behind, with Santos flags waved and applause by long-time admirers.
The coffin passed by the home of Pele's 100-year-old mother.
On Santos beach, overhead shots showed a view of a message inside a heart, etched onto the sand, reading: "Pele will be eternal."

A procession will then take place on the streets of Santos before Pele is laid to rest in a private ceremony on the ninth floor of the Memorial Necropole Ecumenica, a vertical cemetery poignantly overlooking the Vila Belmiro roughly half a mile away.
Raiola, whose list of clients included Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Erling Haaland and Gianluigi Donnarumma, was confirmed to have died on Saturday at the age of 54.
He had been in a critical condition at a Milan hospital.

He posted on Instagram: "I still can't believe, you took me out from the streets and you made me learn so many principles in life… to be honest it's not a not goodbye for us wherever you are you will always be in my heart . R.I.P BIG Boss."
