Rising Jamaican sprint star Alana Reid has switched camps from Star Athletics to Hurdle Mechanics, Sportsmax.tv can confirm.
The former Hydel High standout will now be guided for the next step of her professional career by Lawrence “Boogie” Johnson, brother of Arkansas women’s head coach Chris Johnson.
Johnson’s accolades include 2024 USTFCCCA Indoor and Outdoor National Assistant Coach of the Year, 2019 USATF National Coach of the Year and 2013 USATF National Coach of the Year to name a few.
One of Jamaica's brightest young prospects will now join a talented and experienced group at Hurdles Mechanics, based at the University of Arkansas, that has Paris Olympics medallists such as Alexis Holmes, Amber Anning, Anna Cockrell, and fellow Jamaican star sprinters Ackera Nugent and Nickisha Pryce.
In October 2023, Reid, now 19, made the move to start training alongside the likes of Americans Sha’Carri Richardson and Twanisha Terry under the guidance of Dennis Mitchell at the Florida-based Star Athletics Track Club.
In one year of working with Mitchell, Reid won 100m and 4x100m gold at the World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru last year and ran a season's best time of 11.06s.
Reid also competed in the 4x100m relay at the Paris 2024 Olympics as part of the Jamaican team that placed fifth overall.
Reid has 100m personal best of 10.92s set at the 2023 Jamaican Junior Championships, which stands as the National U20 Record and a 200m personal best of 22.95s clocked to win bronze at the 2022 World U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia.
Her decision to join Hurdle Mechanics comes at a critical point in her career as she transitions from youth dominance into the senior ranks.
With her sights set on success at the senior international stage, this move could mark the beginning of another dominant phase of her already impressive young career.
