UWI Mona Pelicans are still celebrating their historic 38-24 win over St Catherine Thundercats, in the National Division Two Grand Finals on May 24, at the Mona Bowl in Kingston.
The win marked the first time the Pelicans are getting their hands on the coveted rugby league silverware.
Winning coach Andrew Dixon is particularly pleased as the win has given the University of the West Indies their second rugby league title this year, their first being the Intercollegiate Championship in March.
Dixon commented, “It’s an amazing feeling to be both Intercol and National Division 2 Club champions. Last Division 2 season we had to settle for third place, and we were determined to do the work and improve on that finish, and that’s exactly what we did. We have now proven to ourselves we can compete and win against strong community teams. All our players did exceptionally well, but I do wish to acknowledge David Williams, Alexander Grant, and Akeem Kitson for the great leadership they provided throughout the campaign.”
Fullback Adrian Hall led the Pelicans with 10 points from 2 tries and a goal, whilst teammates Romario Bartley and Antonio Baker bagged 8points each from 2 tries. Veteran Michael Pearson rounded out their scoring with 8 points from 4 goals.
For the Thundercats, Ameekiqhue Miller led with 6 points from a try and a goal, whilst Andre Lee, Damoy Palmer, Joseph Daley and Brandon Barrett each went over for a try. Veteran Stephen Scott slotted over a goal to round out the scoring.
In the 3rd place playoff, Duhaney Park Firestorms orchestrated a 38-28 win over cross-town rivals, West Kingston Hyenas.
