Jamaica’s Olympics-bound gymnast Danusia Francis is eager to get back into competition as she continues her preparation for Tokyo 2021.

Francis is the only gymnast that will represent Jamaica at the Olympic Games in Tokyo following in the footsteps of Toni-Ann Williams groundbreaking Olympics debut in Rio 2016.

Practice has been going well, she said. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has restricted her ability to find competition and just recently the British government imposed another lockdown because of significant spikes in infections.

Still, she has managed to remain positive just waiting for restrictions to be lifted which will eventually allow her to compete once more.

“I am looking forward to getting back on the competition floor next year to dust off the cobwebs. My coach (former world champion Natalia Ilienko Jarvis) and I have just choreographed a new floor routine too, so that’s been something fun to focus on!” she said.

Anticipation of what that routine will look like should be high given what she unleashed in March 2019 at the O2 Arena in London where she got perfect scores for some of her jaw-dropping routines. Her creativity caught the eye of Inside Gymnastics Magazine, who in their February 2020 edition named her among the 50 most creative artistic gymnasts in the world.

The honour still resonates well with her.

“It feels amazing!! Our sport is called “artistic” gymnastics so you be recognized as one of the top 50 most artistic is a huge achievement and I feel very proud,” she said.

“I pride myself on being a performer and see this as one of my strengths so I’m very happy to be on this list!”
