The Jamaica Table Tennis Association (JTTA) has announced that twin brothers Malone and Shacoil Bird will represent Jamaica at the 2024 Pan Am U-11 and U-13 Table Tennis Championships. The young athletes will compete in the Boy’s Teams, Boy’s Doubles, and Boy’s Singles events, bringing their exceptional talent to the prestigious tournament set to take place from August 19-25 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Accompanying the talented duo will be their coach, Orvill Young, and Delegate/Manager, Dale Parham. The team is scheduled to depart Jamaica on Sunday, August 18, 2024, and return on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. JTTA President Ingrid Graham will also join the team on August 22 to meet with Pan Am Table Tennis President Juan Vila to discuss matters concerning the sport's future. Her accommodation is being graciously provided by the Dominican Republic Table Tennis Federation.

The Bird brothers earned their spot in the Pan Am Championships thanks to their outstanding performances in the boy’s under-11 category at the 2024 CRTTF Mini and Pre-cadet Championships. Malone Bird captured gold in the Singles event, while the duo clinched gold in the Doubles event and secured third place in the Teams event, proving their prowess on the regional stage.

"We are confident that they will give a good account of themselves, their country and by extension, the Caribbean," said JTTA President Ingrid Graham.

The JTTA expressed gratitude to the sponsors and donors who played a crucial role in facilitating the team’s participation in the upcoming championships. These include the Sports Development Foundation (SDF), Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA), Western Sports Limited, G.R.O.W.T.H Foundation, and Friends of Table Tennis.

As the Bird brothers prepare to showcase their skills on the international stage, the JTTA is confident that they will represent Jamaica and the Caribbean with pride and excellence. The association, along with their supporters, eagerly anticipates their performances and wishes them success in their pursuit of glory at the 2024 Pan Am U-11 and U-13 Table Tennis Championships.

Three-time Jamaican Olympian and Puma’s Marketing Manager for Running, Juliet Campbell, demonstrated her commitment to supporting grassroots athletics in Jamaica by donating approximately 80 pairs of competition spikes to six schools at the Jamaica Athletic Administrative Association (JAAA) headquarters in Kingston on Friday.

The beneficiaries included Excelsior High, York Castle High, Steer Town Academy, Harbour View Primary, Garvey Maceo High, and Marcus Garvey High School. These schools, not currently sponsored by Puma, often face challenges in acquiring proper athletic equipment.

“Outside of Puma’s sponsorship of some Jamaican schools, there are still a number of schools that are struggling for equipment,” Campbell explained. “These are not sponsored schools, but I am just helping.”

The donation is a significant boost for schools like York Castle and Steer Town, where resources are limited. Marvin Johnson, who coaches at both institutions, expressed gratitude for the donation, which included 13 pairs of spikes for his athletes.

Coach Johnson collecting competition spikes from Juliet Campbell on Friday.

“At York Castle, we have a very large squad of about 33 athletes, and the principal has been doing his best to support the program financially,” Johnson said. “But when it comes to footwear, it’s very difficult to get. These spikes will cover about 50 per cent of our athletes and are a big boost as we prepare for Champs (ISSA Boys and Girls Championships).”

Johnson anticipates a 60-40 split in favour of York Castle due to its larger team size and higher number of potential qualifiers for Champs.

Garvey Maceo’s coach, Tatiana Smith, echoed similar sentiments. The school received about a dozen pairs of spikes, including specialized ones for jumping events. She highlighted the impact of the donation on her program, which operates in a school where track and field is not a dominant sport.

“This will help us a whole lot because over the years we have had to seek outside sponsors for spikes, as most of our students can’t afford them,” Smith said. “We won’t have students sharing spikes anymore. With what we have now, each athlete will have a pair of spikes for themselves.”

By providing access to quality equipment, Campbell’s donation not only alleviates financial strain on schools but also helps athletes focus on their training and development as they prepare for major competitions. For these schools, the donation represents more than just new gear—it’s a step towards fostering talent, building confidence, and inspiring future generations of Jamaican athletes.

Trinidad and Tobago is set to welcome regional rivals Dominica, Jamaica, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) for the third edition of the Jewels of the Caribbean Invitational Women’s Football tournament as they intensify their respective preparations for next year’s Concacaf Under-20 qualifiers.

The tournament, scheduled for December 15-20, provides a platform for some of the Caribbean’s most promising under-20 female footballers to display their talents ahead of their 2025 campaigns.

As host, the Twin Island Republic will participate with two teams, the Red Angels and the White Angels, coached by former senior internationals Ayanna Russell and Dernelle Mascall, respectively.

Details of the event were revealed by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) on Wednesday.

“The Jewels of the Caribbean Tournament is fast becoming a staple on the Caribbean football calendar, offering valuable competitive opportunities for women’s teams outside of Concacaf and Caribbean Football Union-organized events.

“This year’s event is made possible through the backing of the NGO Female Forward, which played a key role in securing First Citizens Bank as the tournament's title sponsor. Additionally, FIFA has stepped in to assist participating associations by covering expenses such as accommodation, meals, and internal transport,” a release said.

The action kicks off on December 15 with a double-header at the Larry Gomes Stadium. Jamaica and SVG will face off at 2:00pm, before the Red Angels and Dominica lock horns at 4:00pm.

On Monday, the White Angels will open their account against SVG at 7:00pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium. The tournament will conclude with the final and the third-place playoff, both to be held at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

TTFA president Kieron Edwards emphasized the broader significance of the tournament.

“This tournament is a tremendous step forward for women’s football in our region...it underscores the TTFA’s commitment to elevating women’s football and providing opportunities for growth and development,” Edwards noted.

The tournament marks the start of a busy period for Trinidad Tobago as their Under-20 team is grouped with Bermuda, Canada, and Dominica for the women’s qualifiers, scheduled for February 20-25.

Meanwhile, the Under-17 women will compete against Belize, Honduras, and the US Virgin Islands in their qualifying group from January 27-February 1.
