Kristofferson rebounded from yesterday’s loss to pull off an impressive win over Sondre Evjen, who was promoted above McConnell to second place. The 22-year-old Jamaican was penalized for making contact with Evjen's rear bumper while attempting to pass.
“It’s unfortunate that the stewards decided my move was worth penalizing but if I see a gap and don’t take it I might as well go home. I’d take that chance every day of the week, that’s just racing for me,” McConnell told Sportsmax.TV after his second podium finish of the weekend.
“The (quality of) the competition was so high, changing from a six-lap final to a four-lap is difficult. You don’t have much time to make up after the start and if you get caught in the dust the car starts to lose a little bit of power, I did the most I could,” he said.
That incidental contact, McConnell said, was among today's mistakes, which he said, he can’t afford to make while racing against the world’s best. Overall though, he said he and his team are happy with his performance this weekend which clearly demonstrates that he can more than hold his own against the sport’s best.
“I couldn’t be happier with the weekend’s results, leaving the double event with two pieces of trophy. This, in my mind, is a success. I think everybody at home is pleased with the result so I am looking forward and keeping focus for the next event.
“It gives me momentum for the rest of the season and it should be a promising year,” McConnell said.
On Saturday, McConnell, who came close to defeating Kristofferson last season, achieved that objective in his opening race of the season.
“Big up – this is unreal!” he said afterwards.
“The quality of these drivers is incredible, but the level of Olsbergs MSE is unbelievable. We never give up, and whilst our pace was up-and-down all day, I gave it everything I had. I’m with the best team in the world, and I’m racing for the best country in the world. Big up everybody!”
Following today’s competition, McConnell is third in the standings with 47 points, trailing Evjen’s 51 and Kristofferson’s 56.
