Fernando Morientes believes Inter star Lautaro Martinez could fit in at either Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Martinez, 22, has been heavily linked with a move to Barca after a fine season during which he has scored 16 goals in 31 games.

Madrid also reportedly have an interest in the Argentina international, who is said to have a release clause of €111million.

Former Madrid and Spain forward Morientes feels Martinez would have no trouble fitting in at either of the LaLiga giants.

"In Spain, we were lucky to enjoy great Argentine players and coaches. They have a competitive gene that is very difficult to find anywhere in the world," he said, via Sport.

"Barcelona is very interested in buying him, but there has also been talk of Real Madrid although I think more about Barca.

"He is a very interesting player for either team. He has a very good vision of the game.

"He is one of the best forwards in the world at the moment and I think he could fit into either team."

A move to Barcelona would see Martinez reunite with international team-mate Lionel Messi.

Messi is out of contract next year, but Morientes believes the six-time Ballon d'Or winner is destined to finish his career at Camp Nou.

"I don't imagine him outside Barcelona. He reminds me of [Paolo] Maldini, [Francesco] Totti, [Carles] Puyol, like them," he said.

"He is a club player, one of those who have started and finished his career in a very powerful club. I don't even think about it.

"I hope he reaches an agreement. He is the most important player in Barcelona and he will be until the end of his career."

Lautaro Martinez and Lionel Messi teaming up at Barcelona would have a positive impact on Argentina, according to the national team's assistant coach Roberto Ayala.

Having scored 16 goals in 31 appearances for Inter in 2019-20, Martinez is a target for LaLiga champions Barca and it was last week reported he had agreed a five-year deal at Camp Nou.

Former Napoli, Milan and Valencia centre-back Ayala has been impressed by the 22-year-old's development under Antonio Conte this season and the partnership he has struck up with Romelu Lukaku.

With the coronavirus pandemic meaning the Copa America has been postponed until 2021, Ayala thinks Martinez potentially playing with six-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi at club level next term would be of huge benefit to Argentina.

The South American powerhouse have not won a senior international trophy since 1993, with Messi on the losing side in four finals during his career.

"The more matches they play together, the more they can get to know each other, it can be an advantage [for Argentina]," Ayala told Ole.

"But we will have to see if Lautaro plays for Barcelona or not because we can't forget [Luis] Suarez is there. We will see.

"It's an important decision Lautaro will have to make. Whatever he decides you have to respect because he's managing his career.

"The more chances of them playing together, the more they're going to understand each other.

"Lautaro is in a very important club at the moment and scoring goals in Italy is not easy.

"At Inter he's grown a lot and learned to earn his place. Inter trust in him a lot, his coach is empowering him, he found a partnership that complements him very well."

Inter are set to play their first game in over three months with a Coppa Italia semi-final against Napoli on Saturday, having lost the first leg 1-0 before football was suspended amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Hertha Berlin attacker Matheus Cunha would be the "ideal" replacement for Lautaro Martinez at Inter, says the Brazilian's former coach and ex-Nerazzurri defender Paolo Tramezzani.

Argentina international Martinez has flourished alongside Romelu Lukaku for Inter this season and has been heavily linked with a switch to LaLiga champions Barcelona, with reports last week claiming he had agreed a five-year deal at Camp Nou.

Cunha, who was nominated for the 2019 Puskas Award, only joined Hertha from RB Leipzig in January and has scored four goals in his seven appearances for the club.

Tramezzani handed Cunha his breakthrough in European football at Sion in 2017 and the Italian, who has returned for a second spell as the Swiss Super League side's coach, believes he has the attributes to be a success at San Siro.

"I think Barcelona have the financial power to lure Lautaro in and as far as I see big steps in this direction have already been made," Tramezzani told Stats Perform News.

"Among the many names to replace him at Inter I heard that of Matheus Cunha, a guy who made his debut with me at Sion and, especially this season, is doing so well in the Bundesliga.

"He is young, born in 1999, Brazilian. For how Antonio Conte plays with his 3-5-2, Cunha can play in different roles... first or second striker, winger. His skills would be ideal for Inter."

Tramezzani became convinced of Cunha's talents when he arrived for a trial at Sion while they were training in the Swiss Alps.

"Three years ago we went with Sion for altitude training at Crans-Montana," he explained.

"He [Cunha] had been scouted by our sporting director Marco Degennaro, who told me to keep an eye on this chap that just arrived and who had to stay with us a couple of days for some tests along with other foreign players.

"He landed in Geneva during the night, at about three or four in the morning, just a few hours before our training.

"My medical crew suggested to me to make him train aside from the main group for a couple of days. I talked to him and he told me he wanted to train hard, so I made him join the rest of the squad that had been training on power for a week now.

"I was impressed because he was the one topping the others in terms of running, ball exercises, tactics and games. He was the most brilliant.

"I was so impressed that after a couple of days I told the sporting director that for me the trial was over. 'Keep him', I said. And we played him right away in the Europa League. He was not even 18 and was a starter. He played a great season with 10 goals scored.

"Individually he has crazy skills. Left [foot], right, header, attacks the spaces, he loves to have space in front of him. Despite being the traditional Brazilian who is so good one-on-one, in dribbling, he always plays for the team, he tries to set up his team-mates, he defends and sacrifices himself when we don't have the ball.

"[He is] a golden boy. I am so happy because I know what he went through. He chased a dream that's coming true."

Inter chief executive Giuseppe Marotta hopes Barcelona do not pay Lautaro Martinez's release clause but vowed to replace the forward with a star if he leaves.

Martinez has been linked with a move to the LaLiga giants, with Inter insisting the Argentina international's release clause of €111million will need to be paid.

Marotta again reiterated the Serie A side had no interest in selling Martinez, but said a star would be signed if the 22-year-old leaves.

"It is difficult to pronounce on his future at this moment, but I say to him – stay focused on the present, there is a season that resumes, there are goals to hit," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"There is no desire of the property to sell Lautaro. He is young, has the future of his own and is a functional element for [Antonio] Conte. Then, of course, there is a clause.

"I don't know what Barcelona think, maybe they will also have alternatives. I hope they don't pay the clause. If Lautaro [leaves], a top player will arrive.

"But in this market, at European level the real difficulty will not be having to buy, but being able to sell. I would say one thing in general – Neymar-style operations, in which one team goes and takes one player away from another, will not be seen for many years."

Inter have been linked with a move for Edinson Cavani, whose contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires at the end of the season.

But Marotta said a deal for Cavani, who has scored seven goals in 22 games this season, was still some way off.

"It is one of the opportunities, it is being monitored as an expiring footballer," he said.

"But we did not go into the matter further: at the moment he is quite far from Inter."

"I wish he had a bit more solid foundation before another change comes. Trains slow down at the best stations and Lautaro is one of them."

"He has a huge future but still has a lot to give."

With Martinez dominating headlines, Scaloni issued a reminder about Sergio Aguero's exploits for Argentina and Manchester City.

Aguero is City's all-time top scorer as he celebrated his 32nd birthday on Tuesday, while he is third on Argentina's overall goals list with 41.

The 20-year-old midfielder – likened to Italian great Andrea Pirlo – has also been linked to the likes of Juventus, Barca and Manchester United.
