Portmore United FC continued their impressive run in the Jamaica Premier League on Sunday, defeating Humble Lion 3-0 at the UWI/JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence.
Andrew Pryce’s men lacked confidence and a sense of direction as Portmore United dominated play from the opening whistle. The defending champions controlled the midfield, created several chances and managed to win comfortably.
With just half an hour played, Portmore United opened up the scoring when Captain Ricardo Morris rifled home from an over-the-top pass from Demar Rose.
Portmore United added a second in the 57th minute courtesy of a Jevick McFarlane’s strike on Demar Rose’s second assist of the game.
Ricardo Morris missed out on a brace in the 77th minute when chipped over the crossbar after latching onto a defence-splitting pass on the edge of the box.
Substitute Chavany Willis scored a stunner in the 84th minute shortly after coming on in what was the final nail in Humble Lion’s coffin.
For his two assists, ball possession, and completed passes, Demar Rose was named the man of the match.
Humble Lion sits at the bottom of the table have yet to register a point in the league this season and their frustration showed in the four yellow cards for the match.
A disappointed Head coach Andrew Pryce said the attitude of the players needs to change.
“I think just the attitude of the players, we have to be a lot tougher and play more like warriors. Football is a game of small margins and the margins that we gave Portmore, they took their opportunities,” he said.
“We got some opportunities and we didn’t take them but, you know, we have to play a lot stronger, a lot tougher and we just not putting out the type of effort that we would want to use to get some victories.”
Meanwhile, Portmore United boss Ricardo Gardner was very pleased with his team performance.
Asked if he thought the game was much easier than anticipated, Gardner commended his players for what he thought was a tough match which his players made to look easy.
“Well, I think the players went out there and executed and made it looked that way, but it wasn’t as easy as we see from the side, but we went out there and we played some good football and it’s good to finish the game with a clean sheet also,” he said.
However, he also believes that his team can improve.
“Our transition when losing the ball, to nullify their strengths and their attacking point where they can get out, we can anticipate a little bit better,” he said.
