Jamaica’s Under-20 Women produced a 2-1 win over the Trinidad & Tobago ‘Red Angels’ to be crowned champions of the ‘Jewels of the Caribbean’ Women’s Under-20 tournament at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Friday.
The Jamaicans took the lead in the in the 18th minute through Alyssa Stephenson.
Stephenson took advantage of a poor clearance from Mikaela Yearwood to dribble into the box and unleash a left-footed shot which goalkeeper Zaira Aimey parried straight back to Jamaica’s number seven who then calmly slotted home to give Jamaica the lead.
The hosts equalized through captain Orielle Martin who unleashed a brilliant left-footed strike from about 25 metres out that evaded Jamaica goalkeeper Sajane Anderson in the 31st minute.
Jamaica got their winner with just over 11 minutes left in the game when Tiny Seaton produced an excellent individual goal.
She picked up the ball just outside the centre circle, flicked it over a Trinidadian defender’s head before beating two more defenders, eventually unleashing a shot across Aimey into the top-right corner from just inside the box.
The Jamaicans then held on for the remaining time against some steady pressure from their opponents to earn the right to call themselves champions.
