While maintaining their winning momentum is important, Jamaica’s senior Reggae Girlz head coach, Hubert Busby, is looking beyond just another victory when they open their two-match friendly series against Peru on Sunday.
Game time is 4:00pm (Jamaica time) contest at the Estadio Alberto Gallardo.
Jamaica last faced Peru in 2019 at the Pan American Games, where they secured a narrow 1-0 win. Despite holding a significant ranking advantage—Jamaica at 40th compared to Peru at 76th—Busby is taking nothing for granted.
In fact, Busby is more focused on having his team—fresh off a two-match home series sweep against South Africa—improve their quality of play against the South Americans as they continue preparations for the World Cup qualifiers later this year.
“This is another opportunity for us to continue to work on our game model and obviously evaluate players in a very challenging environment,” Busby told SportsMax.Tv.
“It's very important that we try to reach the heights and the standards that are necessary for this programme, not just now but obviously moving forward. So every time we get together, yes, winning is important... that’s always a prerequisite, but it’s also important that we keep improving our performances,” he added.
The squad, missing prolific striker Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, features some fresh faces, including Nyema Ingleton and Jazmin Ferguson, who are getting their first taste of international football, and Busby is pleased with how they have integrated into the team.
“The new players have settled in well; most of them are coming from the college ranks, so they’ve had a little bit of a break coming in as they get ready to ramp up their spring season. So they’ve been good, attentive, and they’ve worked extremely hard, and so we are looking forward to giving them an opportunity and experience of international football,” Busby shared.
Though the Girlz were somewhat dominant in their recent 3-0 and 3-2 victories over South Africa, Busby is keen on refining specific aspects of the team’s play.
“Peru is going to pose a different challenge in which we will have to find another solution. So in terms of areas to improve on, we want to be better in possession and look to manage the transitional moments in matches. Of course, we also want to dominate set pieces whenever the opportunity arises, and we also want to ensure we command both boxes because that gives us the best chance to win games,” he noted.
“Our expectations for these games are to represent the country well, put on strong performances, and come out on the winning end. But again, the most important thing for us is to ensure that we produce an improved performance across both games,” Busby declared.
Busby and his staff took the team through a lively training session on Saturday, where they put the final touches on technical and tactical aspects of their game plan.
“The training session was brilliant and really productive. The energy was really high, and everybody's raring to go. Credit goes to the team behind the team—the medical staff and support staff that get these players ready to play matches in such a short turnaround, so we are looking forward to having a positive start in the series,” the tactician stated.
That said, Busby expects a competitive outing against Peru, despite their ranking disparity, as the South Americans have been steadily improving their women’s football programme.
“The Peruvian federation has invested and is looking to improve their women’s programme. So they will pose a good stern test for us, especially in front of their home crowd. We expect them to come out with the mindset to not just entertain but to win,” he ended.
