Trinidad and Tobago will send a two-member team to the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, from March 21-23, with Olympian Michelle-Lee Ahye and multi-talented Tyra Gittens-Spotsville set to compete on the global stage. The National Association of Athletics Administrations of Trinidad and Tobago (NAAA) confirmed their selections as the country aims to make an impact at the prestigious event.
Ahye, a seasoned sprinter and finalist in the 2022 World Indoor Championships, will line up in the women’s 60m, having posted a season-best time of 7.24 seconds so far this year. In her last World Indoors appearance, she finished seventh in the final in 7.11 seconds, and she will be eager to better that result in Nanjing.
Meanwhile, Gittens-Spotsville, a standout in the field events, will compete in the women's long jump, having recorded a promising 6.57m this season. A former NCAA champion, she will be looking to challenge the world's best in an event where consistency and big jumps will be key.
Both athletes will be supported by Team Manager and Coach Paul Voisin, along with Medical Officer Nicole Fuentes Charles as they prepare for the championships.
Trinidad and Tobago has a proud history at the World Indoor Championships, with the nation's most recent gold medal coming in Belgrade 2022, where Jereem Richards stormed to victory in the 400m in 45.00 seconds. While Richards will not be in action this year, the Caribbean nation will be hoping that Ahye and Gittens-Spotsville can deliver strong performances to add to the country’s indoor legacy.
The team is scheduled to depart on March 16 and return on March 26, with all eyes on their performances in China as they take on the world’s best in their respective disciplines.
