In the wake of Jamaica’s 9-0 loss to Canada on Saturday in CONCACAF Women Olympic Group B qualifiers, the Reggae Girlz forward Chenya Matthews said she and her teammates have a lot to learn from the embarrassing loss.

Jamaica’s campaign effectively ended with the loss to Canada as it came after their 1-0 loss to Mexico on January 29, and, with only their match against St. Kitts and Nevis on February 4 remaining, Jamaica has no chance of advancing from the group.

Only the top two teams from the group will advance to the next round of the competition. Matthews said the team did not play to their potential.

“We just didn’t execute the things we are good at,” said a visibly disappointed Matthews said after the rout on Saturday night.

She was at a loss to explain why.

“For some reason, we couldn’t play the ball out wide enough. That is something we definitely have to work on; service into the box, executing when we do get corner kicks and things like that.

“We have a lot to learn from this. It sucks. We will remember this and do anything we can to make sure this does not happen again.”

Matthews said it will be crucial for the team to bounce back with a win in their final game of the campaign next Tuesday when they play fellow Caribbean side St. Kitts and Nevis, who sit at the bottom of the group having conceded 17 goals in their previous two matches.

Jamaica has conceded 10 goals from their two matches.

‘It definitely is going to be important. It’s still a game, still competition and we are representing the Caribbean. It should be an interesting match, and the things we couldn’t get done today (Saturday), hopefully with practice in the next couple of days, we will be able to execute and show that we can make those things happen.”
