Barrow must regroup and stick together – Frustrated boss Pete Wild

By Sports Desk February 13, 2024

Barrow boss Pete Wild cut a frustrated figure after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to struggling Forest Green.

But the Bluebirds chief urged his side to “stick together” and get through their sticky patch after they lost ground in the promotion race.

Cole Stockton’s stunning 25-yard chip of emergency loan goalkeeper Vincente Reyes restored parity after Kyle McAllister’s deflected header put the visitors in front at Holker Street.

But Manny Osabede was allowed to run through Barrow’s midfield to fire home a second-half winner.

After seeing his side drop four points off the top three, Wild said: “I’m frustrated tonight.

“First and foremost well done to Forest Green, they’ve taken their opportunities.

“But it’s two silly, frustrating goals for us to give away. They’ve taken them well and left here with the points.

“It’s a really frustrating evening. It’s an evening that promised so much.

“Again for large parts I felt completely in control and quite at ease.

“To come away with nothing is a tough pill to swallow.

“We just now need to regroup and stick together.

“Nobody said it would be easy, nobody said it was going to be a walk in the park.

“It’s certainly not been that at the moment. It’s really important now that we stick together and get back to basics and make sure we come out of this little blip as soon as possible.”

Relegation-threatened Rovers dragged themselves off the foot of Sky Bet League Two with a welcome win.

It was Steve Cotterill’s first since taking charge of the Gloucestershire club and more importantly ended a painful 15-game winless run which stretched back to the end of October.

“It’s a brilliant win for us,” said Cotterill, whose side had a 472-mile round trip for the game.

“There’s no shying away from the fact it’s a long way to come for us.

“We didn’t want to come all this way and leave with nothing, so we’re delighted.

“Hopefully it’s a sign of an upward curve for us. The players have been brilliant since I’ve come in and this is what we’ve been working towards.

“They’ve worked hard on the training ground and results have been good.

“A special mention has to go to Vincente (Reyes). He’s come here on an emergency loan for us and been thrown straight in.

“We want to thank everybody at Norwich for their co-operation yesterday (Monday) to make it happen.”

  • 'Indisciplined' Man Utd never recovered from early setback in Tottenham defeat, says Ten Hag 'Indisciplined' Man Utd never recovered from early setback in Tottenham defeat, says Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag acknowledged that "indisciplined" Manchester United never recovered from a "very bad start" during their defeat by Tottenham.

The Red Devils suffered their third Premier League loss of the season, as Spurs ran out commanding 3-0 winners at Old Trafford.

United fell behind after just three minutes when Micky van de Ven ran almost the length of the field before crossing for Brennan Johnson to tap home, while Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke sealed Tottenham's victory in the second half.

And Ten Hag believes his players were deeply impacted by their early setback.

"A very bad start from us. To concede a goal after two or three minutes like that, did something to our belief," he told BBC Match of the Day.

"It was totally unnecessary to concede a goal like this, the [opposing] centre-half stepping in and passing the whole team over the right side, and then the winger tapping in at the far post.

"From that moment on, we were stressed on the ball. We were indisciplined. We could not find the triangles or the switches. We had some good moments, but from that moment, we could not get a foothold.

"We can do better than that. First, we have to deal with this and show resilience. This is not good enough."

United played over half of the game with 10 men following Bruno Fernandes' 42nd-minute red card for a high challenge on James Maddison.

Ten Hag feels the dismissal was harsh, but is confident his players can bounce back from their latest defeat.

"We had chances to come back, and then the red card changed the game," he added. "I don't think it was a red card. It was only 1-0; we could have made a comeback, and it had a big impact on the game.

"There is always a new day, and we will learn from it. My players are strong characters and we will bounce back. We have to learn from this and quickly."

  • Clement hails Butland's penalty heroics after narrow win Clement hails Butland's penalty heroics after narrow win

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has heaped praise on Jack Butland after the goalkeeper saved a penalty to help secure a 1-0 win over Hibernian.

The hosts took the lead in the 34th minute, with Tom Lawrence whipping a delightful finish into the top-right corner after cutting inside from the left.

Hibs were handed a golden opportunity to equalise on the stroke of half-time, with John Souttar penalised for a handball following a VAR review, but Butland got down to make a brilliant save.

After the break, Cyriel Dessers was denied at point-blank range and Robin Propper twice failed to hit the target in quick succession, but Rangers' lone goal proved to be enough.

While Clement was frustrated by the penalty decision, he was quick to praise his goalkeeper's work as they held on to claim all three points.

"Jack's save was a massive moment," he told RangersTV. "I think Jack was happy as he has been less involved in the last few weeks - it's a good feeling to be important in those moments.

"For me, it wasn't clear why it was a penalty. We discussed these things before with the other managers and the referee department.

"The clean sheet is massive. We brought in Jefte, who is new, Nana Kasanwirjo has come in, and we have a new pairing at centre-backs with John and Robin Propper.

"It is not just defensively; we also have Connor Barron who is new in front of them. They haven't played together too long, but with the organisation, Jack hasn't had to make many saves.

"But when he did, he came up with a massive one and that is a top goalkeeper who keeps his concentration in the big moments."

Rangers came into this game on the back of a Europa League victory away to Malmo on Thursday.

While far from their best, Rangers still managed to claim a fourth consecutive victory in the Scottish Premiership without conceding for the first time since February 2022.

Clement admitted the quick turnaround affected his players' performances.

"The first half we played well, and we deserved the lead, although we could have scored more," he added.

"In the second half, it was more difficult, you could see the freshness going out of the legs of several players.

"We didn't get back to the training centre until 2am on Friday, and then we played at midday, so we had less freshness, so it was important to get the three points and another clean sheet."

  • Al Kholood 2-4 Al-Hilal: Koulibaly on target as champions move to summit Al Kholood 2-4 Al-Hilal: Koulibaly on target as champions move to summit

Al-Hilal withstood a late Al Kholood rally to move top of the Saudi Pro League following a 4-2 victory at King Abdullah Sport City Stadium.

The damage was done during a late first-half surge by the reigning champions, who leapfrogged Al-Ittihad to the summit of the table.

Al-Hilal broke the deadlock in the 38th minute through former Napoli and Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who finished after Renan Lodi initially struck the woodwork.

Malcom doubled the lead four minutes later, then Ali Al Bulayhi made it 3-0 in first-half stoppage time.

Former Atletico Madrid and Nottingham Forest defender Lodi then got in the act to make it four within three minutes of the restart.

The hosts finished the contest the stronger of the two sides with Hammam Al Hammami and a William Troost-Ekong penalty halving the deficit, but that rally could not prevent the visitors from remaining perfect after their first five games.

    Data Debrief: Al-Hilal remain perfect

Al-Hilal have won each of their opening five games in a Saudi Pro League season for the third time in their history, also achieving the feat in 2010-11 and 2018-19.

Jorge Jesus' side also continued their dominant record against newly promoted clubs, having now won each of their last nine such matches.

Despite their late surge, Al Kholood suffered their third defeat of the season, though there was individual cause for celebration, as former Al-Hilal player Mohammed Jahfali came on for his 200th Saudi Pro League appearance.
