Gavin Gunning pleased to start Swindon tenure with win over Bradford

Gavin Gunning was pleased with how his Swindon side prevented “manic” Bradford from playing during their 2-0 win in Sky Bet League Two.

Gunning kicked off his stint as Swindon’s interim manager until the end of the season with all three points.

He said: “It was one of those games when neither side is ever going to have a lot of possession because Bradford are very route-one.

“It is always going to be about the second balls and you are never going to dominate because they will get bodies around the ball and it is manic.

“It is not great to watch but the boys did so well to deal with that and then go and show their quality.

“From one to 11 it was fantastic application, actually all 18 of them really, the subs that came on knew their jobs fantastically well.

“Nobody sulked and that made me very happy, but this was just the start.”

Swindon had a penalty after 16 minutes when Paul Glatzel was brought down in the area. Charlie Austin stepped up and emphatically dispatched his third goal in as many games.

Bradford could have levelled late in the first half as Brad Halliday floated a ball into Andy Cook in the middle, but he could not get enough power behind his header to beat Jack Bycroft, who got down
quickly to save.

Swindon doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time as Glatzel ran through down the right and got away from his marker before giving Dawson Devoy a tap-in at the far post.

Graham Alexander was frustrated with the lack of cutting edge in his side’s performance as they once again drew a blank.

The Bradford boss said: “We’ve been blunt, we haven’t had an edge and intensity to our game.

“We’ve let the fans down today. I feel we have anyway. You know they’ve come down in numbers again and given great support.

“But we are nowhere near the level that they expect or we expect. There’s no players in there now thinking that was anywhere near good enough.

“We know where we have to improve. We’ll have a chat on Monday.

“We haven’t gone overboard today because I know they are a good bunch of guys. We just need to help each other improve.

“Bradford City fans want to see a team that’s really aggressive and on the front foot and wants to attack and wants to create pressure on the opponent.

“And that’s what we’ve been giving them for a long, long time until the last two weeks.”

Marc Skinner revealed that Manchester United could be without midfielder Ella Toone until the new year after she picked up a calf injury in training.

Toone has featured in five games in the Women's Super League this season, but is yet to register a goal or an assist so far this term.

The 25-year-old has missed United's last two games and was not selected in Sarina Wiegman's England squad for their upcoming friendlies against the United States and Switzerland.

She had previously appeared in a staggering 96 straight matches before missing United's WSL showdown with Leicester City last weekend.

But ahead of the Red Devils' meeting with league leaders Chelsea on Sunday, Skinner confirmed they would be without Toone for not only that game, but for the foreseeable future.

"We have three games [after the international break and before Christmas]. There's always the hope, but I think you balance and you go, 'right, if we can get her back, we get her back'," Skinner said.

"But we're just not going to rush her in this moment because it's a calf injury, it's your running mechanism. If we injure the running mechanism, it takes longer.

"So ideally we'd like her back for those games afterwards.

"The projection is she misses this game [Chelsea], she misses the international window, probably misses the first game after that, and then we'll see from there.

"But because it is such a short block of only three games, we'll assess whether it's worth that or actually resetting to come back after Christmas."

  • Al-Nassr 1-2 Al-Qadsiah: Aubameyang winner ends hosts' unbeaten run Al-Nassr 1-2 Al-Qadsiah: Aubameyang winner ends hosts' unbeaten run

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit the winner as Al-Qadsiah inflicted a 2-1 defeat on Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League on Friday to end their 21-match unbeaten run.

Cristiano Ronaldo's seventh league goal of the season put Al-Nassr ahead, but Al-Qadsiah replied swiftly through Julian Quinones before Aubameyang struck the decisive blow.

The hosts drew first blood in the 32nd minute when Ronaldo slotted home after Al-Qadsiah goalkeeper Koen Casteels had spilled a routine catch from Talisca's cross.

However, Al-Nassr's joy was short-lived when Quinones brought down Turki Al Ammar's delivery five minutes later, with the Mexcio winger firing past Bento to level the scores.

Quinones also played a part in the winning goal after brilliantly turning the ball back across goal from Nahitan Nandez's search pass to tee up a simple finish for Aubameyang.

The result sees Al-Qadsiah move level on 22 points with third-placed Al-Nassr, with Al-Shabab also level with them.

Stefano Pioli's Al-Nassr are six points adrift of defending champions and leaders Al-Hilal, who also have a game in hand.
