New Notts County boss Stuart Maynard will ‘respect’ Barrow point

By Sports Desk January 27, 2024

Notts County boss Stuart Maynard said he would respect the point earned in his first game in charge of the Magpies after a 1-1 League Two draw with Barrow.

Aaron Nemane’s second-half strike cancelled out Kian Spence’s opener to leave both sides still within the play-off places.

Speaking after the game, Maynard said: “It was frustrating because when you are at home you want three points, but we will respect the point.

“Barrow are a team that will frustrate you and you have to give them credit, they are probably one of the best in the division and that is why they are in the league where they are, you have to give them credit – we respect the point and that is probably a fair result.”

It was the first time the 43-year-old had managed in the Football League, having signed from part-time National League side Wealdstone last week.

“The fans here are amazing,” said Maynard. “They got behind the boys and even at the end, they are clapping them off.

“At the club now, you can see that everyone is together and we will keep going to make sure they continue to have performances to sing about.

“It’s a proud moment for me to be the head of this football club.

“When you walk out and look at the fans, the stadium and where we are as a football club, it is a very proud day for me and my family.”

Barrow boss Pete Wild explained that his side’s performance signalled the return to being back to their best against one of their play-off rivals, with the visitors currently sitting fourth.

“I think that is us back at our best today,” said Wild. “We are really good at frustrating teams and I thought we frustrated them for long periods today.

“But they are very good and have got some individual brilliance in the team, but I think we defended for our lives today.

“On another day we could have nicked it but over the course of the game, we broke when we needed to, we’ve kept hold of the ball and that is Barrow at their best today and I am really pleased with a point.”

The draw leaves the two sides six points apart in the table, but Wild insisted that the seventh-placed Magpies would be right up there come the end of the season.

He added: “They are a top side and they will be right up there because they have some top players.

“At some points today you are stood there laughing and going ‘that is a good ball’ or ‘that is a good move’. They have got some top players so to come away from here with a point, we are over the moon.”

Barcelona suffered their first LaLiga defeat of the season after going down 4-2 against Osasuna at Estadio El Sadar.

Ante Budimir scored twice, while Bryan Zaragoza and substitute Abel Bretones were also on target for the hosts, who claimed their first league win over the Blaugrana in nine attempts.

Osasuna were unbeaten in their six previous home league games and took an 18th-minute lead when Budimir nodded home from Zaragoza's cross.

The latter, who is on loan from Bayern Munich, doubled the advantage 10 minutes later when he rounded off a swift counter.

Pau Victor halved the deficit eight minutes after the restart, but Budimir's 72nd-minute penalty put the hosts back in control, before Bretones made it 4-1 with seven minutes remaining.

Lamine Yamal climbed off the bench to reduce Barca's arrears, but it was a consolation for Hansi Flick's side, who dropped their first points this term.

Data Debrief: Flick misses out on matching Martino

Flick was aiming to become only the second Barca manager after Gerardo Martino in 2013-14 to oversee eight straight victories at the start of a LaLiga season.

However, he and the visitors were denied by their inspired hosts, who have now recorded four successive home league wins for the first time since September 2011.

Al-Hilal withstood a late Al Kholood rally to move top of the Saudi Pro League following a 4-2 victory at King Abdullah Sport City Stadium.

The damage was done during a late first-half surge by the reigning champions, who leapfrogged Al-Ittihad to the summit of the table.

Al-Hilal broke the deadlock in the 38th minute through former Napoli and Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who finished after Renan Lodi initially struck the woodwork.

Malcom doubled the lead four minutes later, then Ali Al Bulayhi made it 3-0 in first-half stoppage time.

Former Atletico Madrid and Nottingham Forest defender Lodi then got in the act to make it four within three minutes of the restart.

The hosts finished the contest the stronger of the two sides with Hammam Al Hammami and a William Troost-Ekong penalty halving the deficit, but that rally could not prevent the visitors from remaining perfect after their first five games.

    Data Debrief: Al-Hilal remain perfect

Al-Hilal have won each of their opening five games in a Saudi Pro League season for the third time in their history, also achieving the feat in 2010-11 and 2018-19.

Jorge Jesus' side also continued their dominant record against newly promoted clubs, having now won each of their last nine such matches.

Despite their late surge, Al Kholood suffered their third defeat of the season, though there was individual cause for celebration, as former Al-Hilal player Mohammed Jahfali came on for his 200th Saudi Pro League appearance.
