Darren Moore delighted to secure first win as Huddersfield boss with QPR victory

Huddersfield boss Darren Moore was delighted after finally getting his first win since taking over at the Championship club with a 2-1 victory over struggling QPR.

But the former Sheffield Wednesday manager still wants more from his side, despite ending a five-game winless run with victory.

A six-minute double from Kian Harratt and Jack Rudoni did the damage for the hosts.

Jake Clarke-Salter pulled one back with his first QPR goal, but the Terriers held on for a vital three points.

“First and foremost I’m delighted with the three points,” said Moore. “I’m pleased we were able to get the three points in front of the home fans.

“We set off so well and scored two perfect goals, but then it was like we pressed the pause button.

“I commend the players for staying resolute though. And can I just say Michal (Helik), Matty (Pearson) and (Tom Lees) Leesy are proper centre-backs.

“It was top drawer defending from Michal to make that goal-line clearance in the second half.

“We now have a lot of work to do on how we maintain that pressure from the first 20 minutes.

“I thought the substitutes that came on the pitch gave us good energy to maintain things too.

“There’s a lot for us to learn, but I have to take the positives from a win like that.”

The Hoops are languishing in the Championship relegation zone after a fourth defeat in a row.

They have gone seven games without a win and boss Gareth Ainsworth said: “We were too sloppy at the start of the game. We started the game like we knew Huddersfield would score before we kicked ourselves into action.

“At 2-0 down you give yourself a mountain to climb. We almost climbed it.

“There’s a saying in football that it’s about both boxes, it doesn’t matter how good you are outside of the boxes.

“Huddersfield were better in our box than we were in their box. We weren’t clinical enough or got the final touch to rescue a point or maybe get three.

“I truly thought we were the better team second half, but it came to nothing.

“The start was unexpected, sometimes it goes that way. Some teams in this league will be better than us man-for-man, but that wasn’t the case.

“We made it too easy for them. I’m missing a few crucial names, but I’ve got a good squad and we need to be better than that.

“I’m pretty sure we’ll finish above the line, but it will be a tough season without a doubt.

“I don’t know what the stats are in the Championship for winning from 2-0 down, but I’m sure it’s a crazy stat.

“But we need to react quickly. We need to dust ourselves off because we can’t feel sorry for us.

“Things just aren’t going for us at the minute but we’ll go on a good run soon – we’re on a bad run at the moment but it will come. We can go to West Brom and turn them over, definitely.”

  • Conte: Napoli need to focus on improvement, not Serie A lead Conte: Napoli need to focus on improvement, not Serie A lead

Napoli should pay little attention to their place at the top of Serie A, so says Antonio Conte, who has demanded improvement from his team.

Romelu Lukaku's second-half goal handed Napoli a 1-0 win over Roma on Sunday.

That victory sent Napoli back to the summit of Serie A, with Conte's side one point ahead of Atalanta, Inter, Fiorentina and Lazio, while Juventus are only four points back in a six-team title race.

Napoli needed to get back to winning ways after a draw against Inter and a 3-0 loss to Atalanta before the international break, and Conte insists his team must sharpen up.

"Before the match, I told the lads not to look at the table, but to focus on ourselves and improving what we are working on," Conte told Sky Sport Italia.

"I maintain that now too because we need to take a series of steps to raise the level.

"I was satisfied with the performance for a good 65 minutes today, we could’ve taken more of our chances and were up against a strong Roma who have great players.

"Roma were also making their debut under a new coach and therefore were very eager to prove themselves, but we still should've dealt with the final 15-20 minutes better, as we sat too deep and made it complicated for ourselves."

Roma, playing under new boss Claudio Ranieri, came close to equalising when Artem Dovbyk hit the woodwork with a header.

Ranieri came out of retirement to take charge of Roma following Ivan Juric's dismissal earlier in November, though the visitors had just six shots and accumulated only 0.6 expected goals (xG) at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

"If we look back, we have some problems and that is why I was called. We were up against a team that is fighting to win the Scudetto," Ranieri told Sky Sport Italia.

"Having said all of that, I am happy with the performance from my players. We made some mistakes that we will talk about during the week, but the hunger, the determination to get back on track was there.

"We have a lot of work to do, but I feel positive.

"We know there is work to be done, we have to focus on reacting rather than sitting there feeling sorry for ourselves.

"The [players] need the right character to help themselves and then others. Naturally, when I arrived, the team was a little closed up, but I think we started to open up a bit by the second half."

  • Leeds edge 'basketball game' at Swansea as Gnonto nets injury-time winner Leeds edge 'basketball game' at Swansea as Gnonto nets injury-time winner

Wilfried Gnonto's stoppage-time strike fired Leeds United to the Championship summit as they beat Swansea City 4-3 in a contest defender Joe Rodon compared to a basketball game.

Daniel Farke's team were twice forced to come from behind in South Wales as a Manor Solomon strike and a Ben Cabango own goal saw them respond to first-half efforts from Harry Darling and Liam Cullen.

Solomon's second put Leeds 3-2 up with 73 minutes gone, but Florian Bianchini's 90th-minute leveller looked set to keep them third in the table, behind Sunderland and Sheffield United.

However, substitute Gnonto tucked home following an assist from former Swansea winger Dan James, sending the travelling fans into raptures and securing Leeds' second straight victory.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Rodon – who began his career with Swansea – said: "It was like a basketball game! Credit to the boys.

"Every game we want to keep a clean sheet, but you know how it is in the Championship, and Swansea made it difficult for us."

Gnonto now has eight goal involvements in the Championship this season, scoring three and assisting five.

Only Norwich City's Borja Sainz (11 goals, two assists), Middlesbrough's Finn Azaz (five goals and seven assists) and West Brom's Josh Maja (10 goals, one assist) have more.

  • Sunderland go top of Championship despite late draw with Millwall Sunderland go top of Championship despite late draw with Millwall

Sunderland leapfrogged Sheffield United back to the top of the Championship table after their 1-1 draw with Millwall on Saturday.

Aaron Connelly had given Sunderland the lead just 10 minutes in, benefitting from a clearance to beat Lukas Jensen on the volley and claiming his first goal for the club before the players were taken off the field for half an hour due to two medical emergencies in the crowd.

Millwall were a different side when they came back out onto the pitch, with Anthony Patterson having to pull off a string of fine saves to preserve Sunderland's lead.

The hosts eventually got a deserved goal in the 93rd minute though, as Femi Azeez stabbed home Aidomo Emakhi's cross for his first Millwall goal.

It is a fourth consecutive draw for Sunderland, who sit above Sheffield United on goal difference, while Millwall stay eighth.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough moved back into the playoff places with a thumping 6-2 victory over Oxford United.

A hat-trick from Emmanuel Latte Lath, a double from Finn Azaz and another from substitute Tommy Conway saw Boro score six goals in an away league game for the first time in 64 years.

Greg Leigh had given the hosts a surprise lead, and though Dane Scarlett halved the deficit with his second-half goal to make it 4-2, they could not mount a comeback, leaving them 18th in the table, while Middlesbrough jumped up to fifth.

Meanwhile, Luton Town eased some of the pressure on manager Rob Edwards with their 1-0 win over struggling Hull City to move out of the drop zone.

Mark McGuiness scored the only goal of the match in the 33rd minute, brilliantly volleying his maiden Hatters goal in to help Luton move up to 16th.

Hull could not find a winner, despite Joao Pedro hitting the post in the first half, and they dropped into the relegation zone as their winless run extended to eight matches.

Norwich City are on a run of seven games without a win after playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw with West Brom.

Emiliano Marcondes and an own goal from Torbjorn Heggem gave Norwich the lead after Mason Holgate's early opener, but Josh Maja's 10th goal of the campaign cancelled out their lead just before half-time to earn them a point.
