Burton and Fleetwood share spoils in uninspiring draw

Burton and Fleetwood ground out a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the Pirelli Stadium in a game high on effort but lacking in quality.

Joe Powell and Junior Quitirna scored the goals that were the only real highlights in a game between two sides who have both had difficult starts to their League One campaigns. The point for Albion at least enabled them to climb out of the bottom four courtesy of results elsewhere.

Jack Marriott tested Max Crocombe in the Burton goal inside the first 30 seconds but it was Albion who went in front on 17 minutes. Powell’s penalty – awarded when Ben Heneghan, on his Fleetwood debut, brought down Mark Helm – was saved by Jay Lynch but he fired in the rebound.

Fleetwood hit back two minutes later with a goal of quality when Quitirna turned and beat Crocombe with a curling and dipping effort into the far corner.

Albion had strong shouts for another penalty just before half-time when Mustapha Carayol wend down amidst a scramble in the box but referee Ollie Yates waved it away.

Both sides struggled to create anything to really threaten a winner in a frustrating second half.

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has urged his side to be brave in Tuesday's Champions League clash at Bayern Munich, admitting their stuttering start leaves no room for error.

PSG are languishing just under the play-off section of the Champions League standings in 25th, having won one, drawn one and lost two of their four matches to date. Bayern are 17th with two wins and two losses.

The difficult start to the campaign has made things more challenging for the Ligue 1 leaders, Luis Enrique said at his pre-match press conference on Monday.

"It's obvious that after four matches, including three at the Parc des Princes, with fair or unfair results, unfair for me, we have to have good results to qualify," he said.

"We made things difficult for ourselves. Football is what it is. You have to score.

"We will give it our all, we will be brave, we will take risks, as we usually do."

Bayern have won their last three games against PSG in the Champions League, with the French side failing to score in each of those matches.

Luis Enrique accepts it will be a tough match and that his side need to perform above and beyond.

"It is very clear that we are two teams that are similar. We want to have the ball, we press very high... we have similar statistics," he said.

"We are among the best teams with goal chances, but there will only be one ball. And so one team will have to suffer. Them, or us.

"We'll probably have to go further against Bayern. Run more, raise the level, especially against Bayern at home."

  • Mbappe position switch works wonders for Ancelotti Mbappe position switch works wonders for Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti was satisfied his tactical decision to switch Kylian Mbappe's position in attack paid off in Real Madrid's 3-0 win over Leganes.

Mbappe scored his seventh goal of the season to help Madrid to a comfortable victory in LaLiga on Sunday.

However, his position in Madrid's front line has been a topic of debate since he joined the Spanish champions, with Mbappe having often played out wide while at Paris Saint-Germain.

And Ancelotti elected to switch Mbappe out to the left flank against Leganes, with Vinicius Junior spearheading Los Blancos' attack.

"Mbappe played on the left side, where he did well, and Vinicius on the inside," Ancelotti told reporters.

"We have to highlight their play to open the scoring. They did very, very well. Mbappe scored, after a fantastic assist from Vinicius. Little by little, they're both improving.

"Kylian is more used to playing there and today, for the team and for him, it was the best thing.

"Because playing on the outside brings more effort and Vinicius was back on Thursday. Meanwhile, Kylian had been training here for a week and a half, he was fresher."

Mbappe was not called up by France coach Didier Deschamps for this month's Nations League games, despite being Les Bleus' captain.

With an injury crisis at the back and a trip to Anfield to face Premier League and Champions League leaders Liverpool coming up, Ancelotti added he was hopeful of Lucas Vazquez, who has a hamstring strain, and Aurelien Tchouameni, who is recovering from a sprained left ankle, returning to action.

He was also upbeat about the contribution of Federico Valverde, who scored from a free-kick while filling in at right-back.

"The truth is that Fede, at the back, has done very well," said Ancelotti of the Uruguayan, who also wore the captain's armband.

"He's a fantastic fullback. After Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez, the best right-back in the world. His problem is that he can play at this level in many positions and is the coach's problem to choose the best position for the team.

"Let's see if Lucas and Tchouameni can recover. If not, we will make decisions."

Jude Bellingham netted Madrid's other goal as Ancelotti's team closed to within four points of LaLiga leaders Barcelona, who drew 2-2 with Celta Vigo on Saturday.

Madrid also have a game in hand on Hansi Flick's side.
