Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke believes incoming Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag needs to be given full control at the club if there are to return to the top of the English Premier League.
The 50-year-old Trinidadian played for Manchester United between 1998 and 2002 scoring 48 goals in 96 matches and was instrumental in the club winning the historic treble – Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in his first season there. He also formed a productive partnership with Andy Cole that led to the club another Premier League title in the 1999/2000 season.
Speaking to ESPN about ten Hag, who will replace interim manager Ralf Rangnick at the end of the current season, Yorke believes that the incoming manager should be given free rein in order to transform the club’s fortunes.
Manchester United are currently sixth in the league standings on 54 points and is in danger of missing out on the top 4, and consequently, the Champions League next season.
"If he has full control he can implement his style, his way, and the players that he wants on board to make sure he can get the best out of them. I think that is the key,” Yorke reasoned, adding that Manchester United’s hierarchy also needs to give the manager time to rebuild.
"I think they will give him time, the fans are aware of that. But they want to see progress. I know people are saying it will take some time but ultimately they will want to see some progress along the way.”
Notwithstanding, Yorke believes that the task facing the new manager will be a challenging one.
"There is no doubt this is the biggest job in world football and with the struggles we've encountered this season, there is no way that is going to be an easy task for him."
