UEFA has opened an investigation after Inter supporters were denied entry to Tuesday's Champions League tie with Porto despite having tickets for the match.
Footage emerged on social media ahead of the last-16 second leg showing hundreds of fans queueing to get into Estadio do Dragao as the game kicked off.
Porto had announced earlier in the day that Inter spectators who had purchased tickets in the home end, even if through the club, would be turned away.
But Inter claim an agreement was reached for their fans to attend the game if they wore neutral colours.
European football governing body UEFA confirmed on Wednesday that the matter is being looked into.
“UEFA had been made aware that a large contingent of visiting supporters had procured tickets in home sectors of the stadium," a spokesperson said.
"The UEFA regulations stipulate that five per cent of the stadium capacity must be provided to the visiting team in a segregated area for their supporters.
"The responsibility for the safe and secure management of spectators and the associated ticketing policy are determined by the match organiser and the relevant authorities.
"Mitigation measures were discussed between both clubs. UEFA is currently looking into the matter."
Inter claimed a goalless draw to advance through to the Champions League quarter-finals as 1-0 aggregate winners.
The Italian club's chief executive Beppe Marotta dedicated the result to those who were unable to get into the ground.
"We celebrate this passage that Inter had not achieved for 12 years, we give the credit to our coach, our players and the fans who were present," he told Sky Italia.
"I also want to spare a thought for circa a thousand fans who were left outside the stadium even after regularly purchasing a ticket.
"I saw footage of families who were locked outside, children crying who had flown here from Italy.
"Football must represent unity and joy, so this is a bitter page in what was otherwise a wonderful evening.
"We had met with the local authorities this morning and they assured us the fans would be allowed in even beyond those limits of the away section. Instead, this did not happen.
"These were for the most part families with children, who certainly weren't here to perpetrate acts of violence, but to support their team.
"I don't believe the situation was so serious as to ban their entry.
"We realise UEFA are not to blame, but we feel that with a formal complaint we can prevent this sort of thing ever happening again."
Southgate hails ruthless Saka after stunning England strike
Gareth Southgate praised the ruthlessness of Bukayo Saka after his starring role in England's 2-0 win over Ukraine.
England made it six points from two Euro 2024 qualifiers with a routine win at Wembley on Sunday.
Saka, a leading light in Arsenal's challenge for the Premier League title, supplied the assist for Harry Kane's opener in the 37th minute.
He then made it 2-0 three minutes later by bending a magnificent long-range strike into the top-right corner, his eighth goal for the Three Lions.
"It is a top-level finish [from Saka]," Southgate told Channel 4.
"That is the ruthless part he has added to his game in the last 18 months or so. There were times you weren't sure he was going to finish, but now he has that confidence in front of goal."
England were in control throughout, with Ukraine never looking likely to produce a comeback in a game where they did not manage a shot on target.
The command England enjoyed naturally delighted Southgate, who also had plaudits for James Maddison, the Leicester City playmaker creating five chances in an impressive showing.
"The risk is that when you have control of the game you have the odd sloppy pass, but the application throughout was excellent," added Southgate.
"We have broken down a lot of barriers over a period of time. We still had that question mark over some of the bigger teams.
"We are starting to win those games now but there is still lots of room for improvement.
"To back up the Italy result was important, but there is still room to grow."
"We are always trying to think about now and what is next. We did that with James Maddison today. We thought it was a good game to see him.
"He was defensively very solid. It was nice to get Ivan Toney on the pitch as well. We will always look at people, but we have to qualify and we can't take that for granted."
Argentina's training facility named after Messi
Argentina have honoured Lionel Messi's World Cup heroics by naming their training facility after their talismanic captain.
Casa de Ezeiza, in Buenos Aires, houses Argentina's national team set-up, but it will now be known as Lionel Andres Messi.
Chiqui Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), confirmed the news on Saturday, tweeting: "We lived a historic day in our Casa de Ezeiza, which from today will be renamed Lionel Andres Messi, in homage to the best player in the world.
"I want to thank all the managers, players and employees of @afa for having been with us."
Messi dragged Argentina to glory in Qatar last year, emulating the success of the late Diego Maradona as La Albiceleste claimed their third world title, and first since 1986.
"This recognition is one of the nicest I've ever received," Messi posted on Instagram. "A great honour, thank you very much!!!"
Messi scored the 800th goal of his stellar career in Argentina's 2-0 friendly win over Panama on Thursday. The 35-year-old's next goal on the international stage will be his 100th for his country.
Koeman 'expected more from everyone' after France ruin Netherlands return
Ronald Koeman unsurprisingly said he expected more from his Netherlands team after they were beaten 4-0 by France in his first game back as head coach.
Koeman replaced Louis van Gaal to begin his second stint as Oranje boss, and will have been as surprised as anyone to see his team go 2-0 down after just eight minutes in the Stade de France, and 3-0 down after 21 minutes.
Speaking to NOS Sport after the chastening defeat in their Euro 2024 qualifying opener, Koeman admitted he had not expected such a gulf, though his team had finished with 59 per cent possession and just one fewer shot than the hosts (12-11).
"I did not take into account that the difference would be so great," he said. "I expected more from everyone. The team performance was below average.
"We lost the ball 20 metres from our own goal. That is a place where you should never lose the ball. And then France is, of course, a very good team that is lurking and immediately benefits."
Antoine Griezmann, Dayot Upamecano and new France captain Kylian Mbappe gave Les Bleus an early cushion, before Mbappe struck again two minutes from time after intercepting a pass from Memphis Depay, who later had a penalty saved by Mike Maignan.
"Memphis lost the ball, but Mbappe of course finishes it off great afterwards. So it was not just us. It was also the class of France," Koeman conceded.
The Netherlands were without some key players including Matthijs de Ligt, Cody Gakpo and Sven Botman with viral infections, but Koeman was in no mood for excuses.
"Of course the preparation has not been ideal. That has left its mark," he said. "But there have been just too many moments today when we failed.
"We now know where we stand and have learned from this. It can therefore also turn out positively. We are going to learn and improve, including us as technical staff."
Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk added: "We didn't get there, lost the duels and lost the ball too often. The second goal was a set piece, but the other goals came because we handed them the ball. France has so much quality, they immediately punish that.
"We will analyse the defeat and take a good look at what we can do better, but it is clear we are very disappointed."
The Netherlands host Gibraltar in their second Group B game on Monday.
