Carragher slams 'embarrassing' Man Utd over failed Rabiot and De Jong moves

By Sports Desk August 19, 2022

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has labelled Manchester United's conduct in the transfer window as "embarrassing".

United sit bottom of the infant Premier League table after back-to-back defeats to Brighton and Brentford, with unrest among the supporters being widely documented as they push for the removal of the Glazers' ownership.

Frustration has also stemmed in the transfer market, where United have struggled to land their top targets and have seen a hunt for a new midfielder receive widespread criticism.

Erik ten Hag's side had agreed a deal with Juventus for Adrien Rabiot but pulled out due to the Frenchman's wage demands, while they have chased Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong throughout the summer without making a breakthrough.

United are now widely reported to be pushing for a deal to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid and Carragher has highlighted how the difference between the three players shows the deep-lying issues with the club's recruitment.

"Just look at the Adrien Rabiot deal, which collapsed this week due to the player's wage demands," Carragher wrote in the Telegraph.

"If you are a club like United, you should not be pulling out of transfers - after agreeing a fee with the selling team - due to wage demands. Someone at the club should already know what sort of salary the player wants, long before it reaches this point.

"They have also spent weeks chasing Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong, and now they are running around trying to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid.

"From De Jong, to Rabiot, to Casemiro. They are all different players with different styles and ages. What is the plan here? Where is the strategy? It is embarrassing."

Carragher compared United's transfer approach to that of Liverpool's and the rest of the Premier League, identifying that time and patience is the key to success.

"You have to be patient and do things properly. Liverpool trust in the plans they have put in place, and that is what most top clubs are doing," he explained.

"When you look at United, it reminds you of a team in the bottom three of the Premier League, frantically trying to make a few late signings in the January transfer window. Top clubs should never be panicking like this.

"To be clear, I have very few complimentary things to say about United's current squad of players, as I don't think many of them have the required character or personality to play for the club.

"But it is evident that their struggles are part of a wider problem, stretching back years."

Grant McCann was a proud man after Doncaster won 4-1 at Colchester to register a 10th straight victory and move into the play-off places.

Colchester took a ninth-minute lead through Jayden Fevrier, who converted Tom Hopper’s cross at the far post, but remain in relegation danger after Rovers’ emphatic comeback.

Luke Molyneux equalised after collecting Jamie Sterry’s short free-kick and scoring with a low 25-yard shot and Doncaster took a 22nd-minute lead through Harrison Biggins, who netted from close range from Molyneux’s delivery.

Tom Anderson netted a third in the 76th minute at the near post from Hakeeb Adelakun’s pass, and Joe Ironside sealed victory when he converted after Sam Hornby had tipped James Maxwell’s shot onto a post.

A point on the final day against Gillingham will seal a play-off spot regardless of results elsewhere and McCann said: “I’m really proud.

“Obviously conceding early wasn’t ideal for us but the response was outstanding.

“We scored two very good goals, the first one from Mols (Molyneux) and the second one was another very good goal and something we knew could help us in the game, Biggo’s (Biggins) runs from the centre circle in between the posts after good play by Mols.

“In the first half, we were a little bit edgy and it was a little bit even Steven in the game.

“But in the second half, we were really comfortable and scored another couple of really good goals.

“We always play for more goals; we never sit tight and take what we’ve got – that’s just the way we like to go about things.

“We came up against a team that’s obviously down the wrong end of the table and we knew it was going to be tough.”

Fevrier had Colchester on track to secure survival but they go into Saturday’s final game just three points above the drop zone, with their goal difference superior by four over Sutton.

Colchester boss Danny Cowley said: “It was a tough night for us.

“We have the ability to self-harm, to self-destruct, in a game where we let four terrible goals in.

“For 75 minutes, it was 2-1 and they’ve had three shots at goal, two from 30 yards, and somehow they’re winning the game.

“We were 2-1 down at half-time where we felt we shouldn’t have been, as we’d done a lot right.

“We were in total ascendency and they don’t even want to score any more goals, they want to hang onto what they’ve got and we gift them another two goals.

“I’ve just looked back at the goals and they’re very hard to defend.

“We actually played well box to box but you can’t say you’ve played well when we’ve conceded the goals that we have.

“It’s a damaging night and I’m really angry. We just did the basics so poorly.”

  • Barrow must stick together in quest to secure play-off spot – Pete Wild Barrow must stick together in quest to secure play-off spot – Pete Wild

Barrow boss Pete Wild stressed his side must stick together to secure a League Two play-off spot on the final day of the season.

The Bluebirds suffered a fifth defeat in a painful six-game winless run with a last-gasp 2-1 loss to Bradford.

It means they have to get a result when they host promoted Mansfield on Saturday.

Bobby Pointon opened the scoring with a great strike in the first half before Kian Spence levelled with a free-kick after the break.

But former on-loan Barrow forward Tyler Smith came off the bench to score a bruising stoppage-time winner against his old club.

And Wild said: “We didn’t do anything with or without the ball. We were frustrated at half-time. I told them ‘we’ve got to have a go and try to get over the line’.

“We played really well second half, had a go, came out fighting and got the goal, but it wasn’t enough.

“We were on the front foot. We kept trying to throw subs on to put impetus into the game and you get hit by a sucker punch at the end.

“We had four chances to clear the ball and that’s been the month hasn’t it. There have been key moments in game, chances and opportunities with the football and we’ve not done that.

“We weren’t getting a glove on them and we had to try and be braver, second half.

“I will never make it about them, it’s about us. We’re all a collective. We will win together and lose together and that’s how we’ve gone through the season.

“What we have to do now is just stick together and try to keep going.

“Across the last four games you have seen glimpses of us, but not enough of us across a full 90 minutes to get over the line.”

The Bantams were indebted to Sheffield-born Smith’s late winner for their fourth-straight win.

Boss Graham Alexander said: “I’m pleased that the players have once again showed character and personality to once again get a win from a game we should never have been drawing anyway.

“We were brilliant in the first half and should have been two or three up. But we weren’t and a good team like Barrow are going to come back into it and have a spell of pressure and momentum.

“Ultimately they got a goal from it. From our perspective it’s a poor one to concede going through the wall.

“Our performance became a bit flat after that. They had real quality and gained chances.

“The subs that came on halted their momentum.

“They were going for it as well and it was going to be (down to) who had that quality to score.

“To be fair to Tyler, he would have been under massive pressure in his own head, but he stuck it in the corner so fair play to him.”

  • Winning FA Cup would be an over-achievement, says Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag Winning FA Cup would be an over-achievement, says Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag claims Manchester United will have over-achieved if they win the FA Cup this season.

Ten Hag and his team have faced criticism after edging past Championship side Coventry on penalties in the semi-finals, having been 3-0 up with 20 minutes to go.

They will take on Manchester City in a repeat of last year’s final hoping to exact revenge and, despite their league struggles, Ten Hag was bullish about what that would mean.

United could miss out on European football altogether, but the Red Devils boss believes the club’s struggles with injury this campaign are a major mitigating factor.

“I would say it’s over-performing with all the problems we have had,” said the Dutchman of the possibility of silverware.

“Getting into the final is already a big achievement, but we are here for trophies. We have an opportunity to win a trophy and that is good. But we are not satisfied by being in the final, we want to win it and that is what we will go for and it’s our mentality.

“That is why we are successful. That’s why I am successful over 10 years as a manager, I always bring out the maximum of each squad.”

Ten Hag was in a combative mood in the press room ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Sheffield United, branding the media reaction to his side’s cup display “embarrassing” and “a disgrace”.

Many fans were also critical and Ten Hag added of the late collapse: “We were not happy with it. I can see the fans are not happy with it as well, but they get fed by opinions.

“But all over, what I heard is that the fans are very happy we are again in the FA Cup final. Even for Manchester United, it is not business as usual, they were not so often in the FA Cup final and they were never in the FA Cup final two times in a row.”

United’s injury problems continued on Sunday, with Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay all picking up issues, and the latter two are doubtful for Wednesday.

Casemiro could again be required in defence, while United’s bench at the weekend featured five teenagers.

“We will put a team out that is capable of winning the match, even if we have to be really creative,” said Ten Hag.

One of the players who will be hoping for a start is 21-year-old Amad Diallo, who has featured five times as a substitute over the past couple of months.

“Amad deserves it, but don’t forget he had a long period in the season injured, so we rebuilt him and now he has had some opportunities and a real contribution,” said Ten Hag.

“He played in a position that is not his best position. He started as a striker and then he had to play in the midfield, so he did well. We have a number of players in that area, there is big competition.

“But I am very happy with his performances and his progress, I see his qualities and his assets can really contribute to our game.”
