Mumbai Indians claimed a stunning eight-wicket victory over reigning Indian Premier League champions Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday.
The Indians got their first win of the 2025 season on the board in emphatic fashion at the Wankhede Stadium, as KKR's poor start to their title defence continued - they now sit bottom of the standings, having lost two of their three matches.
Debutant Ashwani Kumar led a devastating bowling attack for the Indians, taking 4-24 as KKR were skittled out for just 116.
The Knight Riders were on 9-99 when Harshit Rana was sent packing, but a flurry from Ramandeep Singh at least propelled Kolkata into triple figures, with Angkrish Raghuvanshi top scoring on 26.
Andre Russell dismissed Rohit Sharma (13) in the sixth over of Mumbai's chase, yet that did not knock the Indians.
Ryan Rickelton picked up the slack, plundering an unbeaten 62 from 41 deliveries, while Russell (2-35) proved the only KKR bowler capable of doing damage when he ended Will Jacks' stand on 16.
Suryakumar Yadav's rapid-fire 27 shrugged off any nerves, though, as the Indians got the job done with the minimum of fuss inside 13 overs.
Data Debrief: New boy Ashwani steals the show
Ashwani made IPL history on his bow, becoming the Indian with the best bowling figures on their debut in the competition.
Having caught Quinton de Kock out in the second over, as the Indians charged through KKR's top order in the powerplay, Ashwani then dismissed Ajinkya Rahane (11), Rinku Singh (17), Manish Pandey (19) and Russell (five), bowling the latter two out.
This was only the 23-year-old's third T20 match.
At the other end of the spectrum, 35-year-old Trent Boult (1-23) got Mumbai off to a flying start by bowling out Sunil Narine for a duck with the fourth ball of the day. It is the 30th time the Kiwi has taken a wicket in the first over of an IPL innings.
