West Indies T20 captain Nicholas Pooran believes a bitterly disappointing end to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup should serve as a learning experience for the team.
On Friday, a dominant half-century from veteran opener Paul Stirling put an end to the campaign of the Caribbean team, in the first round of the tournament. Stirling’s 66 from 48 deliveries led the Irish to a resounding 9-wicket win with 15 balls remaining and a spot in the Super-12.
The result confirmed a far fall for the West Indies, the two-time champions of the event lost two of three matches to teams who came through the qualification phase. Once again, the Windies struggled with the bat on what looked like a fair surface, limping to 146 for 5 in their 20 overs, before Ireland easily moved down the total, with a little application, proving there were no demons in the pitch.
"It’s obviously a learning experience. We have disappointed our fans back home and most importantly disappointed ourselves,” Pooran said following the match.
“It’s definitely hurting. I definitely disappointed the guys in how I performed as well but we live to see another day,” he added.
In continuation of a general theme in the format this year, the team continued to find runs at the crease hard to come by and were well bogged down by the Ireland strategy. Brandon King ended the innings unbeaten for the West Indies on 62 from 48.
“We haven’t batted well in this tournament at all. On a really good batting surface coming out here and making 145 it was always difficult to ask the bowlers to defend that on this track.”
Harpy Eagles on the brink of back-to-back titles after eight-wicket win over CCC; other games interestingly poised heading into final day
The Guyana Harpy Eagles have put themselves in a strong position to lift a second consecutive West Indies Championship title thanks to an eight-wicket win over the Combined Campuses & Colleges on day three at the Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Ground in St. Augustine on Friday.
CCC started Friday’s proceedings 165-7 off 55 overs leading the Harpy Eagles by 142 runs.
They batted only 9.2 more overs before being dismissed for 203 leaving the Harpy Eagles needing 181 to secure their fifth win in a row.
The Guyanese did just that, needing only 34.5 overs to reach 182-2.
Raymond Perez led the way with 79* while Tevin Imlach hit 50 and Tagenarine Chanderpaul made 42.
Guyana entered round seven third on the points table with 87.2 trailing Barbados (87.6) and the Windward Islands (90). The Leeward Islands are also in the hunt in fourth with 84.6.

Bryan Charles finished with 13 wickets in the match as the Trinidad & Tobago Red Force ended their 2024 West Indies Championship season with an innings and 125 run thrashing of the Jamaica Scorpions on day three at Sabina Park.
The Scorpions entered Friday 159-9 in their first innings, trailing the Red Force by 273 runs. The final pair of Jeavor Royal and Andrae Dennis further 30 before being bowled out in the 64th over of the innings.
The Red Force then asked the hosts to follow on before dismissing them for 118 in just 44.4 overs to complete a dominant win.
Opener Javaughn Buchanan was the only Scorpions batsman to offer any kind of resistance with a 95-ball 33 as Bryan Charles was, once again, the pick of the Red Force bowling, ripping through the Jamaican batting on his way to figures of 7-43 from 13.4 overs to finish with a match haul of 13-125.
Debutant Navin Bidaisee took 2-20 from six overs in support.

England stars out cheaply as Dukes ball returns to County Championship

In Division Two, Yorkshire were dismissed for 159 by Middlesex at Lord’s, where Root steered to gully for five while Brook made just three before nicking to second slip.
Middlesex slipped to 37 for two in reply but Mark Stoneman’s unbeaten 38 and Leus du Plooy’s 23 not out led the hosts to 84 without further loss, with 55.4 overs bowled in the day.
Half-centuries for Ben Charlesworth (62), Miles Hammond (56) and James Bracey (69) ushered Gloucestershire to 319 for eight against Sussex at Hove. Danny Lamb took three for 49 for the hosts.
Colin Ingram’s 69 not out rescued Glamorgan from 27 for four against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. Ben Sanderson’s third wicket left the Welsh side on 96 for five but Ingram’s efforts and 50 from Dan Douthwaite helped them close on 203 for seven after 56.1 overs.
Leicestershire opener Marcus Harris’ unbeaten 77 got his side to 168 for two after 46 overs against Derbyshire at Derby.
