The Barbados Royals secured their third successive victory of the 2022 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season with a resounding win over Trinbago Knight Riders by 80 runs (DLS).

The Trinbago Knight Riders won the toss and chose to field, but a brilliant opening stand of 85 runs between Kyle Mayers and Quinton De Kock built the platform for Barbados Royals to score an imposing 194/4 after their 20 overs, with captain David Miller playing an exceptional innings, scoring 60 runs from just 36 balls.

In a chase that was affected by rain, Trinbago Knight Riders suffered a batting collapse, losing six wickets in the powerplay before rain brought a premature end to proceedings with the score at 51-7 after 8 overs, the Royals winning on DLS by 80 runs.

Barbados Royals got off to a sensational start, making their highest powerplay score so far of the season with 67 runs, Mayers scoring 45 of those. After losing the wickets of both openers, Miller continued the momentum with some big shots, frustrating the Knight Rider’s bowling attack, before a late batting cameo from Jason Holder took the side to 194/4.

Trinbago Knight Riders lost a flurry of wickets early in their chase, with Devon Thomas taking the big wickets of Tim Seifert and Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard with his off-spin. Obed McCoy took the wicket of Nicholas Pooran with the last ball of the powerplay before Andre Russell lost his wicket in the following over. Heavy rain forced an early end to the match with eight overs bowled and the Knight Riders 51-7, with the Royals winning on DLS by 80 runs.

The win means Barbados Royals maintain their 100 per cent start to the tournament while Trinbago Knight Riders have suffered their first defeat of the season.

Ryan Rickelton hit his maiden ton for South Africa, but some impressive bowling from Lahiru Kumara ensured day one of the second Test versus Sri Lanka was an even affair.

South Africa reached stumps at 269-7, propelled by Rickelton's first century in eight red-ball appearances and a speedy 78 from captain Temba Bavuma.

The hosts were left teetering on 44-3 in the morning session after choosing to bat first, with Kumara trapping Aiden Markram (20) lbw for his 100th Test wicket, then dismissing Tristan Stubbs (4) four overs later.

Bavuma restored a sense of calm with his third successive half-century, but South Africa were rocking again at 186-5, Asitha Fernando having Bavuma caught for his second wicket of the day before Prabath Jayasuriya dismissed David Bedingham for six.

However, Rickelton and Kyle Verreynne put on 77 for South Africa's sixth wicket of the day, before Sri Lanka star Kumara ended the former's landmark outing when his outside edge found Pathum Nissanka, and Marco Jansen (5) was cleaned out by Vishwa Fernando with the final ball of the day.

Verreynne (48 not out) and Keshav Maharaj will now resume at the crease on day two, with Sri Lanka bidding to halt a three-match losing streak against the Proteas.

Data Debrief: Landmarks for Rickelton and Kumara

South Africa and Sri Lanka each had a player with something to celebrate on the opening day of the Gqeberha Test.

Rickelton's previous high score in Tests was a knock of 42 versus Bangladesh on the same ground in April 2022, but his watchful 101 off 205 deliveries – featuring 11 fours – dragged the hosts out of some early trouble.

Kumara was the man to end his time at the crease, having earlier reached a century of Test wickets. He became the ninth man to take 100 wickets for Sri Lanka in the format, with 87 of those coming away from home.

  • Maposa's last-over heroics wins T20I thriller for Zimbabwe Maposa's last-over heroics wins T20I thriller for Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe pulled off a thrilling two-wicket victory in the final fixture of their three-match T20I series against Pakistan on Thursday.

Tinotenda Maposa helped the hosts chase a target of 133 with his last-over showing, ensuring that Zimbabwe did not suffer a series whitewash.

After electing to bat first, Pakistan found themselves three wickets down after three overs, with Omair Bin Yousuf (0), Sahibzada Farhan (four) and Usman Khan (five) falling early on.

Salman Ali Agha top-scored for Pakistan with 32 runs from 32 deliveries before he was run out by Brian Bennett in the 14th over to leave the tourists 92-6.

Knocks from Qasim Akram (20), Arafat Minhas (22) and Muhammad Abbas Afridi (15) saw Pakistan reach a below-par 133-8 at the end of their 20 overs.

Zimbabwe started impressively in their run chase, with Bennett's effort of 43 from 35 balls sending the tourists on their way before he was dismissed by Sufiyan Muqeem (1-19).

But a middle-order collapse spearheaded by Afridi (3-24) and Jahandad Khan (2-30) set up a nervy finish, with Zimbabwe needing 12 runs from the final over to win.

And it was debutant Maposa who proved to be the unlikely hero, sealing the win with 11 of the 12 required runs in the final over to conclude their three-match series in Bulawayo.

Data Debrief: Chevrons on the board

After disappointing showings in the first two matches, Zimbabwe put on an impressive display to make sure they had something to show for this series, which Pakistan won 2-1.

The hosts have now won nine of their 20 T20Is in 2024 (L12); only in 2022 (W12) and 2023 (W9) have they logged more victories in a calendar year in the history of the format.
