Cowboys QB Prescott 'on track' in recovery from ankle injury – McCarthy

Cowboys head coach McCarthy watched Prescott go through rehabilitation work on Saturday and was pleased with the progress the two-time NFL Pro Bowler has made.

Prescott suffered a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle in an October 11 game against the New York Giants but has had no apparent setbacks in his rehab.

"He's throwing now, doing footwork drills. He's made a lot of progress," McCarthy told reporters on Tuesday.

"Very disciplined in his regimen. He's here almost every day. I'd say he's right on track or maybe a little ahead of schedule.

"I was very impressed with his progress. Just coming off the type of injury and his footwork, and he's doing all of the normal movements that you look to do in a quarterback-school format this time of year."

Prescott had surgery in October to fix the injury, then another procedure in December to address a prior issue with ligaments in the ankle.

He signed a four-year contract extension in March that guarantees him $126million and could be worth $160m.

At the news conference announcing that deal, Prescott pronounced himself "healthy" and said he was "getting close" to a return to the practice field.

The 27-year-old had never missed a start in his NFL career before the ankle injury.

In those 69 regular-season games, he has thrown for 17,634 yards with 106 touchdowns and 40 interceptions.

Prescott has also rushed for 1,314 yards and 24 more touchdowns.

Cowboys QB Prescott declares he will return as starter against Lions

When asked during a press conference on Thursday if he would be starting on Sunday, Prescott responded, “I am.”

He then paused briefly and said, “I think.”

Though he tried walk back his slip-up, all signs point to Prescott being under center for the first time since suffering a fracture near his right thumb in the fourth quarter of a 19-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 11.

He has been medically cleared to practice and got through a full training session on Thursday for the first time since his injury.

''It's about staying where my feet are,'' Prescott said. ''Just thankful I went out there and had a good practice. Just put my mind right where I am, and when I look up I'll be prepared ready to go for Sunday.''

Prescott said he had no issues throwing and joked that he threw 140 passes – his way of saying he has no limitations.

"I did everything. I wasn't limited by any means," Prescott said. "There wasn't a pitch count. I think I threw about 140 balls, something like that. I just made that up, but there was no pitch count. I was full go."

He threw 40 passes during a practice on Wednesday and also threw on the field prior to the Cowboys’ 26-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday.

That marks the only blemish on Dallas’ record since the season opener.

Cooper Rush led the Cowboys to four consecutive wins in place of Prescott, completing 61.9 per cent of his passes for 775 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions for a 97.1 passer rating before completing 47.4 per cent of his 38 attempts for 181 yards with a TD throw and three picks for a 37.3 rating in Week 6.

''He went out there and did everything I expected Cooper to do,'' Prescott said. ''Understand that everybody had to raise their level and everybody is going to continue to raise their level. That is what he has done and what the team has done. Now I can come back and we can keep rolling.''

Prescott, however, also struggled in Week 1, completing 48.3 per cent of his 29 attempts for 134 yards and an average of 4.6 yards per throw with one interception and a 47.2 rating.

Cowboys QB Prescott ruled out of Vikings clash

The Cowboys listed star Prescott as inactive prior to kick-off due to a calf strain, with Cooper Rush to make his first NFL career start.

Prescott had been determined to face the Vikings but the two-time Pro Bowler was always facing an uphill battle to be fit after suffering the injury in the overtime win against the New England Patriots on October 17.

The 28-year-old has thrown at least three touchdown passes in each of his last four games. According to Stats Perform, it is the longest such streak in Cowboys history – Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes is the only other NFL player with a streak of four consecutive games throwing at least three TD passes this season.

Dallas' Prescott boasts a 73.1 completion percentage, which is only second to Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray (73.5), while his passer rating (115.0) is fourth in the league.

Overall, Prescott has completed 158 passes for 1,813 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions for the 5-1 Cowboys in 2021.

Cowboys QB Prescott to start against Broncos

A calf injury forced Prescott to miss last week's 20-16 win over the Minnesota Vikings, backup quarterback Cooper Rush sensationally fuelling the high-flying Cowboys.

After two weeks off to recover from a right calf strain, two-time Pro Bowler Prescott is now set to suit up to face the Broncos.

"Safe to say," Prescott told reporters on Thursday when asked if he would play on Sunday.

"I'm feeling good. Obviously I had two weeks to do a lot of rehab and recover, get everything that I needed to, the different modalities, and I feel good.

"Had two great days of practice and looking forward to Sunday."

The Cowboys (6-1) are averaging 40.3 points per game at home this season compared to 26.0 points per game on the road. Dallas have scored at least 36 points in five straight home games dating back to last season, according to Stats Perform.

In his first career NFL start, Rush threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns, including a 73-yard touchdown pass to Cedrick Wilson. The last Dallas quarterback to have a 70-yard TD pass in their first career NFL start was Roger Staubach in 1969.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott needs surgery for fractured thumb

Jones said Prescott’s injury would require surgery and will keep the star quarterback out for "several weeks" when speaking to reporters afterward. Prescott said he would undergo the procedure Monday while wearing a brace on his right hand during his postgame press conference.

"I was told it was much cleaner than it could have been," Prescott said.

Prescott sustained the injury when his hand struck the helmet of Tampa Bay pass rusher Shaquille Barrett with about six minutes remaining in the game. Cooper Rush replaced the two-time Pro Bowl selection for the rest of the contest.

The seventh-year veteran struggled prior to departing, completing just 14 of 29 passes for 134 yards and an interception.

Dallas, who played without one of its top receivers in Michael Gallup, and traded wideout Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns in the offseason, managed only 244 total yards and finished 3-of-15 on third-down attempts.

After missing most of the 2020 season with a fractured right ankle, Prescott bounced back with an outstanding 2021 campaign in which he threw for 4449 yards and a career-high 37 touchdown passes in leading the Cowboys to a 12-5 record and an NFC East title. Dallas signed the 29-year-old to a four-year, $160million extension in March.

"It’s not the worst thing that has happened to me," Prescott said of this injury. "It’s just a bump in the road, and I will keep moving forward."

The Cowboys went 4-7 in Prescott’s absence in 2020 with three different quarterbacks making at least one start, with veteran Andy Dalton getting the bulk of playing time.

Rush is expected to make his second career start when the Cowboys host the defending AFC Champion Cincinnati Bengals next Sunday. The former undrafted free agent helped Dallas to a 20-16 win at Minnesota in Week 8 of last season by throwing for 325 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott plans to make this a ‘golden year’

"It will be the golden birthday," said Prescott, who turns 29 on Friday. "I plan for this to be the golden year."

Both Prescott and Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy received plenty of criticism after a disappointing 23-17 wild-card loss to the San Francisco 49ers last season. That game ended when Prescott ran downfield with six seconds left on the clock and was unable to spike the ball for one last play.

That defeat left Prescott with a 1-3 career postseason record and kept Dallas without a Super Bowl title since 1995.

Prescott has been unable to do what Hall-of-Famers Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman did – lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl title.

"I mean obviously knowing the quarterbacks that played specifically for this team, and knowing their legacy, and the ones that we hold at the highest standard are the ones that have Super Bowl rings." Prescott said.

"It starts there for me, trying to fill the shoes of those guys that have come before me and do something for this organisation that hasn’t been done in a long time."

While playoff success has eluded Prescott, he did throw a franchise-record 37 touchdown passes last season and threw for 4,449 yards – the fourth-highest single-season total of any Cowboys quarterback.

"When you don’t win games, it goes on our shoulders sometimes and that’s okay,' Prescott said. "I’m a guy that will take it whenever.

"Take the good with the bad and just continue to help my team, help all 53 who will participate in the game, but as coach says, it takes more than that.

"It takes the whole unit, the whole organisation. I don’t really worry about where the criticism or blame or any of that goes."

The Cowboys open their season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 11.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott undergoes thumb surgery

Prescott fractured his right thumb when his hand struck the helmet of Tampa Bay pass rusher Shaquille Barrett with about six minutes remaining in the game.

Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones said the injury would keep Prescott sidelined for "several weeks", while ESPN has reported he will miss "six to eight weeks as he goes through rehabilitation". That length would see him out until November 13 against the Green Bay Packers.

Prescott missed most of the 2020 season with a fractured right ankle, and the Cowboys went 4-7 in his absence with three different quarterbacks making at least one start, with veteran Andy Dalton getting the bulk of playing time.

Cooper Rush, who stepped in after Prescott's injury on Sunday, is expected to make his second career start when the Cowboys host the defending AFC Champion Cincinnati Bengals next Sunday.

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said: "The nice thing about Cooper is Cooper's been in our system, knows our system inside and out.

"We won't be in that position of trying not to do too much or vice versa. Cooper gives us the ability to keep playing [our offense]."

Cowboys restructure Prescott, Martin contracts to fit salary cap

After seeing his 2020 season cut short by injury, Prescott played 16 times in 2021, as the Cowboys clinched the NFC East with a 12-5 record.

The quarterback led a prolific offense that finished the season with a league-high 530 points, yet the Cowboys fell short in the playoffs, losing to the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card round.

Prescott's tally of 4,449 passing yards ranked seventh in the NFL, while his completion percentage of 68.8 was fourth and only three quarterbacks threw for more touchdowns than his 37.

In 2021, the 28-year-old restructured his franchise-record $160million deal to create space for the salary cap and it is a similar story this time around.

With a $208.2m cap announced on Monday, teams have until March 16 to create financial wiggle room and the new structure of Prescott's deal will result in roughly $15m being saved before the start of free agency.

Five-time All Pro Zack Martin has also had his deal restructured, which will give the team an additional $7m in cap space.

The restructuring of the deals sees a portion of the players' salaries for 2022 being converted into signing bonuses.

Dallas needed the space after placing a $10.9m franchise tag on tight end Dalton Schultz.

Only four tight ends scored more than Schultz's eight receiving touchdowns last season, as he racked up a career-high 808 receiving yards.

However, Dallas will still need to make more changes to get under the cap.

According to reports, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence has declined a pay cut, while Blake Jarwin has also been approached by Dallas to take a hit on his salary.

ESPN, meanwhile, reported that Amari Cooper is likely to be released, which would free up $20m in cap space.

Cowboys safety Malik Hooker haunts his former team in demolition of Colts

The win improved the Cowboys' record to 9-3, good enough for third in the NFC, trailing only the Philadelphia Eagles (11-1) and the Minnesota Vikings (10-2) in the race for the one seed.

It was the Colts leading early, with Matt Ryan's 14-yard touchdown pass to Ashton Dulin giving them a 10-7 lead at quarter-time after their opening field goal was answered by a CeeDee Lamb touchdown catch for the Cowboys.

Tony Pollard put the Cowboys back in front when he forced his way into the endzone from the two-yard line, before Hooker seized full control of the game when he intercepted Ryan with one minute remaining in the first half, allowing the Cowboys to add another touchdown ahead of the break.

Michael Gallup was the recipient of that score in the final seconds of the half, and after an Alec Pierce touchdown cut the Cowboys' lead to 21-19, Gallup snagged his second of the game for some breathing room.

Things would go from bad-to-worse from there for the Colts as their next four drives resulted in turnovers.

Hooker added a fumble recovery and defensive touchdown to his big day, and the next two drives would both end in interceptions by fifth-round rookie DaRon Bland, icing the game and setting up some garbage-time stat-padding.

Dak Prescott completed 20 of his 30 passes for 170 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, while Pollard rushed 12 times for 91 yards and two scores, and Ezekiel Elliott added 17 carries for 77 yards and a touchdown of his own.

Cowboys sign Prescott to $160m deal & end long-running contract saga

Dallas announced the deal on Monday, a day before Tuesday's deadline to place the franchise tag on impending free agents. The Cowboys tagged Prescott last offseason.

Prescott will receive $126million guaranteed, according to multiple reports, in a deal that contains a no-trade clause.

The agreement brings to an end one of the longest-running quarterback contract sagas in the league.

Having failed to come to a resolution on a contract last offseason, Prescott earned $31.4m on the franchise tag.

However, he suffered a devastating compound fracture of his right ankle in the Cowboys' Week 5 win over the New York Giants in October.

Despite that injury, the Cowboys have finally chosen to pay one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL, with the former fourth-round pick having more than justified his new contract.

Since taking the starting role as a rookie in 2016 from an injured Tony Romo, Prescott has thrown for 17,634 yards with 106 touchdowns and 40 interceptions.

He has also rushed for 1,314 yards and a further 24 touchdowns.

Though he missed most of last season, Prescott is 10th among qualifying quarterbacks in yards per attempt (7.69) and 12th in passing plays of 25 yards or more since 2016.

The Cowboys will hold a media conference on Wednesday.

Cowboys star Prescott ready to make NFL return against Brady's Bucs

Prescott's 2020 season ended in Week 5 with a fracture-dislocation of his right ankle and the Cowboys star has been stepping up his comeback ahead of the September 9 trip to Tom Brady's Buccaneers.

Two-time Pro Bowler Prescott – who also hurt his shoulder during preseason, having undergone ankle surgery – expressed excitement over his imminent return for the 2021 opener following Friday's practice.

"I'm definitely ready. I'm excited," Prescott told reporters. "I put in a lot of work to get to this point.

"Whether it was months ago, rehabbing the ankle, to the last few [weeks] keeping the feet working while I was letting my arm rest.

"There is so much work I put into this I'm just excited to go out there and be a part of the full game. Just being out there with my brothers and being able to do something I love."

Since taking the starting role as a rookie in 2016 from an injured Tony Romo, Prescott has thrown for 17,634 yards with 106 touchdowns and 40 interceptions.

The 28-year-old Prescott has also rushed for 1,314 yards and a further 24 touchdowns.

Though he missed most of last season, Prescott is 10th among qualifying quarterbacks in yards per attempt (7.69) and 12th in passing plays of 25 yards or more since 2016.

"I think we went about this process the right way that part of it was protecting me from myself," Prescott said. "I mean, the moment I got into any team reps, I wasn't dialling anything down. I wasn't trying to throw a certain amount of percentage.

"I think that's just the way I play the game, I just went out there and playing within the moment, ripping passes, not thinking about it, just making the plays I needed to make. Then after two days like that realising there wasn't any residual effect and I wasn't sore.

"I've been sticking to the plan and it's all worked out. Yeah, from the shoulder to the leg to my mind, I'm ready to go."

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy added: "You've got to give him credit for the process that he worked himself through. It isn't like he just stood in the back and didn't do anything while he wasn't throwing.

"He's staying on top of the footwork. His conditioning couldn't be better. All the extra work that all these guys put into it, Dak took advantage of that time."

Cowboys stars Prescott & Cooper should 'make as much money as they can' - Frederick

The Cowboys have some interesting decisions to make as starting quarterback Prescott and his number-one target Cooper are both scheduled to hit free agency.

Re-signing Prescott is surely the top priority for Dallas after he threw for 4,902 yards in his fourth season - a total only Jameis Winston could better across the NFL - and they will almost certainly use the franchise tag on the quarterback if they cannot iron out a long-term deal with the 26-year-old.

Last week Hall of Famer and ex-Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith suggested Prescott should take a discount to return to Dallas, freeing up more cap space to keep former first-rounder Cooper, yet starting center Frederick knows this is also an opportunity for both men to sign their first big contracts in the NFL.

Speaking before Smith's comments were aired, Frederick told Omnisport: "It's a business so as a person I hope so many good things for all of those people.

"I want them to go and make as much money as they can and do all of those things.

"From a selfish standpoint, I'd love to have them back on the team but first and foremost for me is those guys take care of themselves and their families."

Should Prescott and Cooper return to Dallas in 2020, they will be playing with a new head coach in Mike McCarthy.

The Cowboys replaced Jason Garrett with the ex-Green Bay Packers head coach after they went 8-8 and failed to make the playoffs, and Frederick cannot wait to get to work with a man who won a Super Bowl ring in his previous job.

"I'm excited to get a chance to work with him," the offensive lineman added.

"I know he's got a proven track record.

"He's a guy who has done really well in the past so really excited just to have a new take on things and get to know him more and get to know his system a little bit more."

Cowboys' Prescott says 'I'll be fine' after injury on game-winning TD pass

Rolling to his right, Prescott leapt to complete a 35-yard touchdown pass to CeeDee Lamb that gave Dallas a 35-29 overtime win at the New England Patriots on Sunday, but Prescott said he came down wrong on the play.

Prescott walked into his post-game news conference wearing a protective boot and the team said he suffered a right calf strain on the final play.

"It just came down funny and that's what it was," Prescott told reporters. "It's something we'll get checked out and I'll be fine."

Prescott will have an MRI on Monday, but the good news for the Cowboys is they are entering their bye week and will not play again until an October 31 trip to face the Minnesota Vikings.

That will provide valuable recovery time for Prescott, who saw his 2020 season end in Week 5 with a fracture and dislocation of his right ankle.

There are no indications this will be a serious setback for Prescott, who did not play in the preseason this year, but the Cowboys can ill afford to lose him for any significant period.

"Life keeps throwing punches and I'll keep throwing them back," Prescott said. "It doesn't hurt as bad when you score and win the game."

Prescott completed 36 of 51 passes for 445 yards with three touchdowns and an interception as the Cowboys beat the Patriots for the first time since December 1996 after six consecutive losses in the interim.

His yardage total is the most allowed by the Patriots in head coach Bill Belichick's 22 seasons with New England, topping a 438-yard game by Peyton Manning in November 2014.

"I can't say enough about Dak Prescott, the way he was distributing the ball, his poise and confidence in the pocket," said Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.

"He never wavered. His process was the same throughout. He's on top of his game right now."

Cowboys' Prescott wants to face Vikings but says not 'fully my decision'

Prescott is battling to overcome a calf strain in time for the Cowboys' clash with the Vikings in Minnesota on Sunday.

The Cowboys quarterback and two-time Pro Bowler has been limited to two days of practice.

"Knowing this is a long journey and a long season, I don't necessarily know if this is fully my decision, but I'm just going to keep controlling the things I can to get better," Prescott told reporters on Thursday.

"I've gotten better each and every day, and that's what is most important. I'm just focused on doing that again tomorrow."

On the thresholds he will have to pass in practice in order to play according to head coach Mike McCarthy, Prescott added: "They didn't tell me which ones I've got to pass.

"Obviously I trust myself, trust my body, trust what I'm thinking, but also I trust the coaches and Britt, Jim [Maurer] and the whole training staff. We've put a lot into this. I've put a lot into my body and taking care of myself.

"But they know. They know how these things work. First time dealing with something like this, obviously on the same leg as my ankle, I want to be smart about it and cautious. But as I've said, I've gotten better each and every day. I'm doing things today I didn't do as well the day before. I think that's huge."

Prescott has thrown at least three touchdown passes in each of his last four games. According to Stats Perform, it is the longest such streak in Cowboys history – Patrick Mahomes is the only other NFL player with a streak of four consecutive games throwing at least three TD passes this season.

Dallas QB Prescott boasts a 73.1 completion percentage, which is only second to Arizona Cardinals star Kyler Murray (73.5), while his passer rating (115.0) is fourth in the league.

Overall, Prescott has completed 158 passes for 1,813 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions for the 5-1 Cowboys in 2021.

Dak is deserving – Jones commits to Prescott, says Cowboys must 'make it work' on contract

Prescott suffered a gruesome compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle when he went down after a tackle from Logan Ryan in the third quarter of the Cowboys' 34-31 win over the New York Giants.

A tearful Prescott was carted off the field on Sunday with his team-mates clearly distressed and Dallas have since confirmed he has undergone successful surgery and been discharged from hospital.

The timing was awful, as the 27-year-old had made a fantastic start to the 2020 season, throwing for 1,690 yards (422.5 per game) through the first four weeks.

And, after two years of failed contract negotiations, Prescott was playing this season under the franchise tag worth $31.4million, without the security of a long-term deal.

Despite the injury's severity, Cowboys owner Jones has taken solace in the QB's expected recovery inside six months and insisted retaining him on a new contract was a must for the franchise.

"This is one that you can mend, come back and be as good as gold," Jones said about the injury on 105.3 The Fan. "I was just so sorry for the circumstances.

"Physically, I'm told by the doctors and in our experience, there should be no problem with him being back out there in early May or April - he should be ready to go for our spring work and the latter part of the spring work."

Asked how much the injury changed his plans for Prescott, Jones added: "None.

"Dak is deserving of anything that you want to put on a piece of paper, relatively speaking. He's deserving of that.

"If you evaluate what he can do to help us win championships, you can see that it's there. Plus, he's a leader at the premier leader spot. We've got to make it work.

"We've got to be reminded that to have a team, we've got to really manage how we dole out our resources. So what am I saying? I'm saying exactly the same thing I said the last time I was asked about this before the season started. This is part of the game, the business and the contract part.

"We have known for a long time that you can have a great player at this spot, but then not have him at periods of time during his career.

"We had it with [Troy] Aikman. We had it with [Tony] Romo. You don't always have them. So, you have got to rely on other parts of your team

"That is why we do not go into a contract negotiation with the idea that it stands alone.

"It has to be a part of your tools which you have, which is your salary cap to put a team on the field and try to figure out the best way to win. And really that is the underlying issue here."

Despite his shortened game against the Giants, Prescott still leads the NFL with his 1,856 passing yards. The closest player to him, the Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson, is 354 adrift.

After coming in to replace Prescott and seal the win over NFC East rivals the Giants, Andy Dalton will take over at QB for the rest of the season.

Dak Prescott 'looked like Michael Jordan' in stunning Cowboys comeback

Dallas trailed 20-0 and 29-10 on Sunday, then were still nine points behind by the time Atlanta punted the ball back to them with just over three minutes remaining.

A touchdown, a recovered onside kick and a field goal gave the Cowboys the most unlikely of 40-39 victories, quarterback Prescott ending the day with 450 yards and one touchdown through the air, having completed 34 of 47 attempts.

He added three rushing touchdowns after earlier being responsible for one of the team's three fumbles, with Ryan seeing Prescott's clutch play in the closing stages as similar to NBA great Jordan in his prime.

Ryan also feels the victory, which moved the Cowboys to 1-1, will help Prescott to get the recognition he has not always received amid a high-profile contract negotiation with his team.

"He looked like Michael Jordan did late in games - he was intense, ready for the moment," Ryan, the former Cowboys defensive coordinator, told Sky Sports.

"This guy has been putting up great numbers and all that for the last few years - people just don't give him the respect that he deserves. Maybe after this game they will start doing it."

Prescott is not the first QB to be compared to Jordan, Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney previously doing the same with Houston Texans signal caller Deshaun Watson.

Ryan has concerns over Dallas' defense ahead of their Week 3 trip to the Seattle Seahawks, who themselves won a thriller last time out, emerging triumphant against the New England Patriots.

He added: "The Cowboys have to play much better defense. They have not stopped anybody since I got fired [in 2012].

"Coming up to play the Seahawks this week; two of the most emotional wins for anybody in the regular season – they are now going head to head. That is going to be a great game.

"Russell Wilson is so great. He just torched the number one defense in football and, specifically, the number one cornerback in football [Stephon Gilmore] - last year's defensive MVP.

"He is on an absolute roll; he has been a great player for a long time."

Dak Prescott signs: Stars congratulate QB as Cowboys boost Super Bowl ambitions

The Cowboys tied their quarterback to a four-year deal reportedly worth $160million on Monday, a day before Tuesday's deadline to place the franchise tag on impending free agents. Dallas tagged Prescott last offseason.

Reports say the agreement, which brings to an end one of the longest-running QB sagas in the league, will see Prescott receive $126m guaranteed in a deal that contains a no-trade clause.

Tad Prescott, Dak's brother, was among the first to react and he wrote on Twitter: "Let's go, Dak. Time to win the Cowboys a Super Bowl."

Former Cowboy Dez Bryant suggested the positive resolution was absolutely vital to the team's title hopes.

He compared the stand-off to running back DeMarco Murray's Dallas departure in 2015, shortly after a controversial playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers.

"The Dak situation started to remind me [of when] we let DeMarco walk in '15," Bryant posted.

"Me, personally, I knew our chances of having a chance to win the Super Bowl [were] gone.

"It wasn't the catch [against Green Bay], it was DeMarco leaving the team which made me feel hopeless. Smart decision, Cowboys."

DeMarcus Ware, Bryant's former team-mate, added: "Congrats, Dak. Go finish what you started."

The Cowboys were 6-10 in 2020 and have not played an NFC Championship Game since winning the Super Bowl at the end of the 1995 season.

Prescott has work to do to make the team competitive again, having missed much of last year following a devastating compound fracture of his right ankle in the Week 5 win over the New York Giants.

He has the backing of several big names, however.

Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey wrote: "It's always earned. Nobody just giving out free money lol. Congrats, Dak."

Free agent wide receiver Golden Tate said: "Congrats to Dak and the best agent in the biz Todd France!"

And NBA All-Star Donovan Mitchell added: "Get paid, my guy! Dak, congrats!"

Ex-NFL defender Darius Butler even suggested Prescott had got a better deal than Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs QB who signed the most lucrative contract in sports.

He wrote: "I'm not a contract specialist but I feel like Dak got a much better deal than Mahomes.

"$75M in year one. $66M guaranteed at signing. No trade, no tag. Back at the table at age 31 at the latest."

Dak Prescott still our future – Cowboys VP Jones

Prescott will likely be out for the remainder of the season after sustaining a fractured and dislocated ankle in the Cowboys' win over the New York Giants on Sunday.

The 27-year-old will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2020 campaign unless the Cowboys opt to again place the franchise tag on him.

However, with Prescott having undergone successful surgery on Monday, Dallas executive vice-president Stephen Jones has insisted he remains in the team's plans.

When asked if Prescott's injury had changed the team's approach to his contractual situation, Jones told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas: "Absolutely not.

"He's our future. He's special. If anyone can overcome anything, it would be Dak. This is something that our doctors feel good that he'll overcome and come back better than ever.

"He's our heartbeat. Just to lose him, really just kills you in terms of deep down."

Despite the severity of the injury, Jones has no concerns over Prescott's ability to recover.

"For him, you hurt for everything that he stands for and I think we're still in shock. But certainly, Dak is such a warrior. He's been through a lot. He's always overcome it, and this is going to be no exception.

"He's going to get in there and do what he needs to do, I'm sure. Obviously, everybody's prayers are with him.

"He should be able to do everything you need to do to rehab and come back ready to go. It's just a very difficult setback for him and for us. It's something that we feel great about him totally overcoming and being ready to go next year."

The Cowboys are 2-3 from their opening five games of the regular season.

Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper 'obvious ones' for Cowboys to re-sign

Quarterback Prescott and wide receiver Cooper are two of 25 Cowboys players whose contracts are set to expire in the offseason.

Jones, who serves as the team's vice-president of player personnel, is focused on tying the star duo down before looking at the rest of the team.

"[Prescott's contract is a] huge priority for us. Obviously, that will find its way in a hurry," said Jones, quoted on the Cowboys website.

"We have to be back interacting with Dak and his representation and Amari and his representation. And then working with coach [Mike] McCarthy and his staff to give us a third-party evaluation.

"Certainly, Dak and Amari are obvious ones, then after that, we have to make sure these guys fit systematically.

"We don't think there's going to be a lot of difference in opinions, but part of what is good about a change, you get to have people come in and give you outside opinions on our personnel and our team in what we need to do to improve and try to win a championship."

Dak Prescott: Cowboys QB to donate $1m in response to George Floyd death

Floyd died in police custody in Minneapolis last week, prompting demonstrations and riots across the United States and beyond.

Prescott commented on the situation with an Instagram post on Wednesday that started: "As a black multiracial American, I am disgusted and unsettled!"

Prescott backed those protesting but does not believe looting or violence is the answer.

He said: "I have viewed these protests and riots in our streets as a form of strength and an attempt to show we as black people have rights that aren't being perceived equally as our counterparts."

Prescott also had something to say to the "men and women that police our streets".

"I have the utmost respect for those of you with a passion for protecting and serving your communities. When you chose to wear the badge of a police officer, you pledged to PROTECT life and property through the enforcement of our laws and regulations," he said.

"How can you claim to uphold the law when those within your own ranks don't abide by it? You need to hold your own accountable!"

Prescott said he is taking action with the donation and "will act alongside of all of you!"

He added: "We will clean our streets and our communities not only of the looting and violence, but most importantly the racism, racial-profiling, and hate!"
