Anthaya Charlton of The Bahamas and Tyra Gittens-Spotsville of Trinidad and Tobago placed sixth and 12th, respectively, in the women’s long jump final, as they were unable to replicate their best form on the world stage in the morning session of the final day at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China.

For Charlton, the competition carried an added layer of anticipation as earlier in the session, she watched her sister, Devynne Charlton, progress smoothly to the semi-finals of the 60m hurdles. She would have hoped to add a medal to the family’s celebrations, but the runway in Nanjing proved unforgiving.

Charlton’s opening jump was a modest 6.24m—a tentative start that left her with work to do. Her second attempt was a foul, which increased the pressure as she lined up for her third. She responded with a solid 6.48m, enough to crack the top 10 and secure three more attempts.

With the pressure off slightly, Charlton found her best mark on her fourth jump, as she cut the sand at 6.57m. While it was an improvement, it left her short of contention for the medals as her final two jumps were 6.46m and 6.49m, a far cry from the 6.98m national record she set earlier this season.

Gittens-Spotsville had an even more frustrating time, as the Twin Island Republic's multi-event star never quite hit her stride. She opened with a leap of 6.27m, followed by 6.05m, and though she improved to 6.36m, it wasn’t enough to advance.

The event was won by American Claire Bryant, who produced a stunning personal best of 6.96m. Annik Kälin of Switzerland delivered a clutch jump of 6.83m on her final attempt to claim silver and relegate Spain’s Fátima Diame (6.72m) into bronze.
