Edwin Allen’s Theianna-Lee Terrelonge signalled an early warning for the season ahead, as she opened her account with a breezy personal best in the girls’ Class Two 100m at the JC/Pure Water meet at the Ashenheim Stadium on Saturday.
Terrelonge, a first-year Class Two athlete, clocked a striking 11.30 seconds in a 1.2 metres per second wind reading, as the time surpassed her previous lifetime best of 11.41.
The 16-year-old also erased the meet record of 11.92, with her closest competitor in the timed-final event being Lacovia’s Sabrina Dockery (11.45), while Shanoya Douglas (11.70), of Muschette High, was third.
Alliah Baker of Hydel, finished tops in the girls' Class One 100m, as she stopped the clock in 11.59, ahead of Trezeguet Taylor (11.69) of Edwin, and St Elizabeth Technical’s Habiba Harris (11.75).
Ferncourt's Rihanna Scott led the girls' Class Four 100m action with a new meet record of 12.19. Teixiera Johnson (12.29) of Hydel, and Edwin Allen’s Tashana Godfrey (12.42), were the runners-up.
On the boys’ side, Raheem Pinnock of St Jago took top honours, as his time of 10.59, was fastest across the 16 heats. Jamaica College’s Dontae Powell (10.68), and Edwin Allen’s Antonio Powell (10.73), were second and third respectively.
Muschette’s Johan-Ramaldo Smythe (10.78), topped the boys’ Class Two 100m, followed by Michael-Andre Edwards (11.09) of Jamaica College, and Tyreece Foreman (11.12) of St George’s College.
Meanwhile, Ched Brown of Calabar won the boys’ Class Three event in 11.21, ahead of Jamaica College's Jordan Grant (11.54) and Ajannie Kelly (11.54) of St Elizabeth Technical.
Elsewhere on the track, Jamaica College’s Rushane Symister clocked a respectable 48.82 to win the boys' 400m open, ahead of Antonio Powell (49.01) of Edwin Allen, and while Kingston College’s Jaquan Coke (49.14).
Edwin Allen's Tonyan Beckford topped the girls' equivalent in 53.93. Her teammate Kellyann Carr (55.37) and Shanoya Douglas (55.53) of Muschette, were second and third, respectively.
Jamaica College's Dorian Charles (53.27) and Hydel’s Aaliyah Mullings (1:00.68) won the boys’ Class One and girls’ 400m hurdles Open events. Charles won ahead of teammate Sean Gardener (53.64) and Calabar’s Requel Reid (54.00), while Mullings also won ahead of teammate Nastassia Fletcher (1:03.36) and Vere Technical's Shevaughn (1:03.54).
Calabar's Robert Miller won the boys’ Class Two 400m hurdles in 54.38. He was followed by Shavoy Thompson (57.84) of Muschette, and Daniel Henry (57.92) of Wolmer's Boys.
Paulino extends 400m winning streak to seven in Shanghai
Dom Rep’s Marileidy Paulino followed up her triumph at the season’s Diamond League opener in Xiamen last week with another victory at the Shanghai Diamond League on Saturday.
The reigning World champion produced 50.89 to win ahead of American Talitha Diggs who ran 51.77 and Bajan two-time World Championship bronze medallist Sada Williams who ran 52.00 in third.
Paulino’s winning streak in the 400m has now stretched to seven races.
It was déjà vu in the women’s 100m hurdles as reigning Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho Quinn just pipped World Indoor 60m hurdles champion and world record holder Devynne Charlton on the line, just as it played out in Xiamen last week.
Camacho-Quinn ran 12.63 compered to Charlton’s 12.64. Two-time World champion Danielle Williams was third in 12.74.
The men’s 110m hurdles saw American Daniel Roberts get his second win in a row to kick off the Diamond League season. His winning time was 13.12, comfortably ahead of Japan’s Shunsuke Izumiya (13.23) and Olympic champion Hansle Parchment’s season’s best 13.26.
Edwin Allen second in Champions of America girls’ 4x800m as Union Catholic sets National Record
Edwin Allen had to settle for second position in the Championships of America high school girls’ 4x800m, as they were soundly beaten by New Jersey-based favourites Union Catholic in the final on day two of the 128th Penn Relays at the Franklin Field in Philadelphia on Friday.
Not only did Union Catholic defend their title, but the team of Jimmiea King, Peyton Hollis, Sophia Thompson, and Paige Sheppard did so in emphatic fashion, clocking a National Record of 8:41.20. They lowered the previous mark of 8:43.12 set in 2008 by Roosevelt.
Edwin Allen’s quartet of Tanesia Gardiner, Monique Stewart, Kevongaye Fowler, and Rickeisha Simms, gave a credible effort in second at 8:50.76, while Virginia-based South Lakes (8:50.8), were third.
The other Jamaican schools, Holmwood Technical (8:58.94) and Alphansus Davis (9:13.83), placed fifth and ninth respectively.
Hydel wins third Championship of America 4x400m title in a row at Penn Relays
Hydel High successfully defended their Championship of America 4x400m title on day two of the 128th Penn Relays at the Franklin Field in Philadelphia on Friday.
The quartet of Alliah Baker, Jody-Ann Daley, Nastassia Fletcher and Abigail Campbell combined to run 3:34.78 to win ahead of Bullis School (3:35.17) and Union Catholic (3:41.75).
Hydel captain Alliah Baker reacted to her second gold medal of the meet.
“I am not shocked but I’m very excited. This is my last year and I’m very happy to finish my last year with two gold medals,” she said.
Hydel have now won this event three straight times and five times in the last six years.
