Michel and Daley Blind were in agreement that Arnau Martinez's sending off was pivotal in Girona's 4-0 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Girona found themselves two goals down at the break thanks to strikes from Ryan Flamingo and Malik Tillman, though the LaLiga side were still in the contest.

Michel's team managed seven shots in the first 45 minutes compared to their opponents' 13, but boasted an expected goals (xG) tally of 0.76 to PSV's 0.61.

However, hopes of a comeback were dashed 10 minutes after the break when Martinez was shown a second yellow card before one-way traffic ensued.

Johan Bakayoko notched PSV's third seven minutes from time before Ladislav Krejci's own-goal confirmed a disappointing result for the LaLiga outfit.

"The first half of both teams was very good in terms of the pace of play, looking for the opponent's goal," Michel told reporters.

"The expulsion was decisive. From there, PSV had chances and deserved to win. In this competition, the small details make a difference."

At the age of 21 years and 194 days, Martinez became the fifth-youngest Spaniard to be sent off in a Champions League match and the youngest since Gavi for Barcelona against Porto in October 2023, aged 19.

Girona have also now conceded four own goals in four games in the Champions League this season, already the most by a team in a single campaign.

They sit 26th in the Champions League table after just one win from their four games in the competition, with Sturm Graz up next for Michel's men.

Blind echoed the thoughts of his manager at full-time, insisting his side had played well up until Martinez's dismissal.

"The first chance was for us, but we conceded a goal from a throw-in, which cannot happen," Blind said.

"After that, we tried to play. It was an open game. We had a lot of movement when we had possession, but overall, PSV had the upper hand.

"We missed a few players through injury. It's a difficult situation. But I don't want to give that as an excuse. We need to do it with the players we have.

"We fought hard. We came out of the dressing room with good spirit. But after the red card, the game was over."

Girona head coach Michel insisted that his side will rediscover the form that earned them Champions League football last season once their injured players return.

Girona find themselves 13th in the LaLiga standings after 11 games this season, but have been hit with several injuries to a plethora of first-team starters.

The likes of Oriol Romeu, Jhon Solis, Portu, Yaser Asprilla, Ivan Martin, Abel Ruiz, Viktor Tsygankov, Pau Lopez, Cristhian Stuani and Yangel Herrera have all missed significant amounts of game time already this term.

Michel, however, is expected to welcome Romeu, Stuani and Herrera back into the side for the visit of Leganes, who are one place below them in the table.

But the Girona head coach insisted he would not rush players back into first-team action, but is hoping to welcome more of his injury absentees back for their Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven next week.

"I am a realistic person and I look ahead. I have no doubt that when the injured recover, the team will be fine and will play well," Michel said.

"I can't predict what people think. We will be a competitive team that can beat anyone.

"Stuani, Romeu and Herrera are back. Jastin and Tsygankov are not far away and Lopez might be available for Tuesday's (Champions League) game against PSV.

"You have players who are close to returning, but we want them to recover well and to be really ready..."

Girona are without a win in consecutive games in LaLiga, but did get themselves a much-needed victory in the Copa del Rey, sweeping aside CD Extremadura 4-0.

And that will give them confidence of returning to winning ways in the league, and they boast an impressive record against this weekend's opponents.

They have not lost any of their four matches against Leganes in the league (W2 D2), keeping a clean sheet in all of them.

Girona head coach Michel has insisted his side will not tiptoe around the challenges of the Champions League amid an injury crisis at the club.

Michel's men welcome Slovan Bratislava to the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi on Tuesday, hoping to secure their first three points of the competition this season.

However, they must do so without several of their first-team players.

It was confirmed by Michel that Girona would be without striker Abel Ruiz and young playmaker Gabriel Misehouy, only adding to the Blanquivermells' injury woes.

The pair join the likes of Viktor Tsygankov, Oriol Romeu, Jhon Solis, Portu, Bryan Gil, Pau Lopez and Yaser Asprilla as the players unavailable for the clash against the Slovakian outfit.

"We have no one back, and we are missing Abel Ruiz due to adductor problems. Misehouy is also missing because he can't play," Michel told reporters.

"Marc Aznar, (Juan) Arango, Selvi (Clua), and two goalkeepers will come from the reserve team and we have to evaluate them.

"Even so, we have 11 players to form a starting side."

Having lost to Paris Saint-Germain and Feyenoord, Girona's absentees have made earning that first win a little bit tougher for the Catalan club.

Should Girona lose on Tuesday, they would become the first Spanish side to suffer defeats in each of their first three Champions League games.

But Michel wants his players to appreciate where they find themselves this season after finishing third in LaLiga last season.

"Playing in the Champions League with Girona cannot be just another game," Michel said.

"I don't want to tiptoe around this competition and that people don't give it the value it has," the coach said.

"It has a lot of merit for what we have done and also for the club, which has made efforts, and we have to enjoy it and value it.

"For me, tomorrow is a very special day, just like the two previous matches."

Girona head coach Michel has tasked his players to "turn the page" following their 1-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on their Champions League debut.

Girona frustrated their Parisian hosts, restricting Luis Enrique's side to just five shots on target from the 26 they attempted.

However, Blanquivermells hearts were broken in the 90th minute after Nuno Mendes' harmless delivery slipped through the hands of Paulo Gazzaniga.

But the Catalan club's focus now returns to league action, having started the season with seven points from their opening five fixtures.

Michel's side travel to the Estadio de Mestalla to face bottom-placed Valencia, a team they have enjoyed relative success against in recent years.

Girona have won four of their eight meetings with Valencia in LaLiga (L4); only against Sevilla (six) have they achieved more wins in the top-flight (four also against Rayo Vallecano, Las Palmas and Celta Vigo).

And Michel insisted that despite their late defeat in midweek, his players are ready to return to winning ways.

“The team is back to thinking only about LaLiga,” Michel told reporters.

“In situations of maximum physical and emotional exhaustion, perhaps there are still players who are still recovering. But our squad is very prepared.

"We need to be at our best, and we need the team switched on.

"After the historic game against PSG, people who have been playing for more years can turn the page quicker.

"Now, my job is to detect which players are in a better state of mind. We have shown that we are a small team with pride.

"That's why I need the people to be on board, to give the maximum help to their teammates."

Valencia have endured a difficult start to the campaign, picking up one point from their first five games.

This weekend's hosts have now failed to win in their last 12 games in LaLiga. Their last joint longest winless streak was from November 2015 to February 2016.

Michel also boasts an impressive record against Valencia, winning three of his six league games against them (D1 L2).

Only against Sevilla (five) has the Girona head coach recorded more wins as a top-flight coach (three, also against Alaves, Celta Vigo and Osasuna).

Despite Valencia's slow start to the season, Michel was under no illusion that this Sunday's trip would be anything but easy.

“Valencia will be a demanding game. They have only taken one point, but they are a team with very good players. At home, they are very dangerous," Michel said.
