Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced that Jordan Johnson will replace Kevlon Anderson in the West Indies “A” Team 14-member squad for the ongoing tour of South Africa.
Unfortunately, Anderson experienced challenges with his visa documentation and was unable to travel to South Africa. Anderson will now join the West Indies Academy team in Antigua for the two four-day, first-class matches against Emerging Ireland at the Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG).
Johnson will travel immediately to South Africa and will be available for selection for the second and third four-day “Test” matches against South Africa “A”. Following the recent International Cricket Council (ICC) announcement that South Africa will now host the ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup in January 2024, the “A” Team call up provides Johnson with the opportunity to gain valuable experience of South African conditions.
West Indies A won the first “Test” against South Africa “A” on Friday by one wicket in a thrilling finish at Willowmore Park in Benoni. The two teams will now travel to East London for the second match, at Buffalo Park starting on Tuesday, 28 November. First ball daily is 10am local (4am Eastern Caribbean/3am Jamaica).
West Indies Academy will start their first-class series against Emerging Ireland on Saturday at the Coolidge Cricket Ground. First ball daily is 10am local (9am Jamaica).

Player of the Match Jordan Johnson scored an unbeaten 40 and Joshua Bishop and Ashmead Nedd each took three wickets as the West Indies Academy defeated Emerging Ireland by seven wickets at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua on Sunday to level their One-Day series at a game apiece.
Chasing the tourists’ modest total of 103 made in 23.3 overs, West Indies Academy raced to 107-3 in just 15.4 overs. Johnson’s knock of 40 came from just 21 balls and included four fours and three towering sixes as he and Teddy Bishop guided the Caribbean men to an easy victory.
Bishop was not out on 32 from 25 balls when victory was achieved.
The pair helped the recover from the loss of three early wickets as openers Kadeem Alleyne and Matthew Nandu fell cheaply for 19 and nine, respectively. Leonardo Julien barely troubled the scorer making only one before Johnson and Bishop repaired the early damage and led the Academy to victory.
Fionn Hand was the best of the Irish bowlers having claimed the wickets of Nandu and Julien to finish with 2-29 from four overs.
Sent in to bat, Ireland never really got going as only middle-order batter Scott McBeth, who scored 29 and opener Stephen Doheny, who got 27, made any score of note. Fellow opener Murray Commins (16) and Gavin Honey (17) were the only batters in double figures against the bowling of Nedd, who returned figures of 3-12 and Bishop, who took 3-19.
Nyeem Young and McKenny Clarke each took two wickets.
Despite a heroic 157 not out from Jordan Johnson, the West Indies U19s lost by seven wickets to Sri Lanka U19 in the second Youth Test at Dambulla on Thursday.
Jordan Johnson’s incredible purple patch with the bat continued on Wednesday but, alas, it might not be enough to save the West Indies U19 from defeat against their Sri Lankan rivals.
Johnson scored an unbeaten 133 to help the West Indies to 251-8 at stumps of the second day of their unofficial Test, a lead of just 51 going into Thursday’s third day.
Sri Lanka resuming from their overnight score of 191-4 after dismissing West Indies for a mere 127, extended their lead of 64 to 199, having amassed a first innings total of 326. The home side owed their commanding score to Maisha Tharupathi, who scored 70 batting in the lower order and Rusanda Gamage, who got 58.
There were also useful contributions from Ravishan da Silva (43) as well as wicketkeeper Sharujan Shanmuganathan (36), Dinura Kalupahana (33) and an unbeaten 31 from Vihas Thewmika.
Nathan Sealy was the best of the West Indies bowling attack taking 4-82 while Isai Thorne took 2-64 and Tarrique Edward 2-75.
Needing 200 runs to overhaul the deficit, the West Indies started well enough reaching 110-2 with Stephan Pascal being the first to go for 25 when the score was 39. Johnson joined Steve Wedderburn at the crease and together they took the score to 111 before Wedderburn lost his wicket for 37.
From there the West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals with Johnson providing the glue that kept the innings from falling completely apart against the bowling of Vihas Thewmika (3-55), Tharupathi (2-44) and Kaveesha Piyumal (2-55).
When play resumes on Thursday, Johnson will be hoping to significantly add to his 133 that so far includes 16 fours and a six while hoping that Tamarie Redwood, who has yet to score, can stay with him long enough to give the West Indies a fighting chance to extend the game into Friday.’

Hosts Sri Lanka ended day one of the second Youth Test against West Indies U19s with a 64-run first innings lead at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka first dismissed the young West Indians for 127 in 36.4 overs after the tourists won the toss and chose to bat.
Left-hander Jordan Johnson followed up his 149 in the last game with a 49-ball 52 including six fours and two sixes while openers Stephan Pascal and Steven Wedderburn hit 28 and 24, respectively.
Vihas Thewmika led the way with the ball for Sri Lanka with 5-43 from 11.4 overs while Malsha Tharupathi took 3-16 from five overs.
Sri Lanka then reached 191-4 off 51 overs at stumps.
Rusanda Gamage was the top scorer with 58 from 52 balls including 10 fours while Ravishan de Silva hit 43 and Pulindu Perera made 41.
Isai Thorne, Deshawn James and Nathan Sealy took the wickets.
The first Youth Test match between Sri Lanka U19s and the West Indies U19s at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium has ended in a draw.
The West Indies entered Friday’s fourth and final day on 119-3 off 31.5 overs, a deficit of 313 runs.
Jordan Johnson, who entered the day unbeaten on 54, carried on to make a brilliant 149 off 207 balls including 11 fours and two sixes. Johnson also hit a century in the ODI series.
Steven Wedderburn entered the day on 28 and eventually made 41 while Nathan Edward contributed 36 as the West Indies were eventually bowled out for 309 in 89.5 overs.
Vihas Thewmika took 6-78 off 28.5 overs while Vishwa Lahiru took 3-61 off 24 overs for the hosts.
Sri Lanka then reached 122-4 in their second innings before play was called off and the spoils were shared.
Ravishan Nethsara hit an even 50.
The teams will now turn their attention to the second match beginning on Monday.
West Indies Under-19s will enter the fourth and final day of the first Youth Test against Sri Lanka U-19s facing a 313-run first innings deficit at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.
The West Indies ended Thursday’s third day on 119-3 from 31.5 overs replying to Sri Lanka’s massive 432-8 declared.
Jordan Johnson has led the way for the young West Indians so far with an unbeaten 54 while his Jamaican countryman, Steven Wedderburn, is the other not out batsman on 28.
Vishwa Lahiru has picked up 2-22 in 11 overs for the hosts.
A quick-fire century from Jordan Johnson and 50s from Joshua Dorne and Tarrique Edward spurred West Indies U19s to an emphatic 195 run ODI victory over Sri Lanka at Rangiri Dambulla on Wednesday. West Indies bowlers, too, played a crucial role in the massive win as Isai Thorne and Deshawn James each took three wickets in the match that saw West Indies level the series 1-1.
Batting first, West Indies scored 320 all out from their 50 overs, thanks to the efforts of Johnson, who laid the platform for the match-winning score. He made 105 from just 79 balls and hit 12 fours and three sixes while featuring in a third-wicket partnership of 160 from just 131 balls with Dorne, who scored a relatively patient 56 from 73 balls hitting the boundary six times along the way.
Edward chipped in with a crucial 53 that helped push the West Indies towards 300 runs through a 60-run partnership with Nathan Edward, who scored 13. Opener Adrian Weir scored 32 and was the principal scorer in a second-wicket stand of 41 with Dorne.
Sineth Jayawardena was the best of the Sri Lankan bowlers with 4-36.
Needing to score at 6.4 runs an over, Sri Lanka’s batters wilted under the pressure collapsing to 40-6 in the 14th over. Only a 46-run partnership between Malsha Tharupathi and Supun Waduge held up the West Indies attack and got the home side closer to the 100-run mark.
They were eventually bowled out for 125 in the 31st over to hand the West Indies victory.
Thorne finished with the impressive figures of 3-18 while James took 3-30. Nathan Edward chipped in with 2-17.
The teams will clash in a decider on Friday, September 1.
Jamaica hold a 115-run lead over Barbados heading into the third and final day of their West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 three-day final at the Arnos Vale Playing Field in Kingstown, St. Vincent.
The Jamaicans were 4-0 at stumps on day two after bowling out the Bajans for 158 in 56.1 overs.
Nimar Bolden led the way for Barbados with 37 as pacer, Deshawn James, took 5-21 off 10.1 overs for the Jamaicans. Tamarie Redwood took 3-56 from 18 overs in support.
Earlier, Jamaica were bowled out for 269 off 108.4 overs in their first innings after entering day two on 217-4.
Jordan Johnson carried on from his overnight 118* to make 120 off 235 balls. His knock included six fours and a six. Captain, Brian Barnes, who entered day two on 59, was dismissed for 61 off 150 balls.
Captain, Nathan Sealy, took 5-64 off 30.4 overs for Barbados.
A win for Jamaica would see them complete the regional Under-19 double having already claimed the 50-over title.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced the squad for the West Indies Rising Stars Under 19s High-Performance camp being hosted at Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG) in Antigua. This is the first activity to bring together the best Under 19s talent in the region and build towards the ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup in 2024.
The squad of 29 includes two players who were part of the West Indies Rising Stars Under 19s squad at the 2022 ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup which was hosted in the Caribbean: left-handed batter Jordan Johnson, and right-arm fast bowler Isai Thorne. A third squad member, top-order batter Justin Jaggessar played two Youth ODIs on the West Indies Rising Stars tour of England in September 2021, but did not play in the World Cup.
Nathan Edward, a left-handed bowling allrounder, was originally selected in the squad but is currently representing St. Maarten in the Leeward Islands Senior Men’s Tournament being played in St Kitts. He will be available for future Rising Stars camps and tournaments.
The players were selected based on performances during the Rising Stars age-group tournaments in 2022. Later in the year, CWI will host the 2023 regional age-group Rising Stars presenting the opportunity for other players to compete for selection into the squad ahead of the ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup.
The Rising Stars Under 19s High-Performance camp will feature targeted coaching sessions and physical preparations as well as sessions geared towards their off-field development. The camp started on 21 February and will run to 9 March. It will feature 50-over matches at the CCG on 25 February; 1, 5 and 8 March.

“This camp is all about the importance of the development of West Indies cricket and this is laying the foundation for the future of our game in the region. This is not just about playing in the ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup next year, but also about developing the overall player on and off the field. We have some very talented players in this group and we know they will do very well. We still have the age-group tournaments later this year where more players can put in performances and earn selection.”
Rohan Nurse, has been named as CWI’s new Talent Pathway Manager. As part of his role, he will design and lead the programme for the players’ preparations leading up to the next ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup scheduled to be played in the Sri Lanka in early 2024.
The former Assistant Coach of the West Indies Rising Stars Under 19s will lead the day-to-day management of the development squad as part of his wider high-performance role managing our best young talent across the region.
During the camp he will be joined by Assistant Coaches Nikita Miller and Rohan Clarke; Nick Wilton, specialist wicket-keeping coach; Graeme West, CWI’s High-Performance Manager; Chris Brabazon, CWI’s Coach Development Manager; and Steve Liburd, West Indies Women’s Under 19 Head Coach.
