The Institute of Sports’ Primary Schools Football and Netball competitions are now down the last 32 after the parish champions have been decided and the draw for the island playoffs completed.

The competition saw the participation of 280 schools for football and 190 schools for netball. This involved the active participation of approximately 8,210 students, with 5,290 participating in football inclusive of 573 females and 2,850 for netball as the parish champions were decided.

St Patrick’s Primary of Kingston are defending all-island netball champion, and they were drawn in Zone 4 alongside Golden Grove Primary of St Thomas, Lime Hall of St Ann and Mandeville Primary of Manchester.

The schools were provided with gears by INSPORTS, with action scheduled to get underway on Tuesday, January 30, when St Patrick’s takes on Lime Hall Primary.

There will be a new champion in the football as the defending champion Pembroke Hall Primary were eliminated during the St Andrew playoffs.

Permanent Secretary, Denzil Thorpe, speaking on behalf of Minister of Sports, Olivia Grange, said the tournaments mark another special achievement in Jamaica’s grassroots sporting development.

“I am sure we would all agree that the Institute of Sports has been doing an excellent job of unearthing talent, as evidenced by the fact that 12 of the 14 National Under-15 team were discovered by INSPORTS and recommended to the Jamaica Cricket Association,” Thorpe pointed out.

“That is the kind of impact we want coming out of these football and netball competitions, which are arguably the biggest age-group competition of their kind in the English-speaking Caribbean,” he added.

“One of our latest stars, Dujuan “Whisper” Richards who signed for top English club Chelsea recently, came up through the INSPORTS football competition, where he was discovered at Harbour View Primary School during the 2015/2016 season.

“These programmes will enable us to bring to the fore, the best talent there is in a competitive environment, in keeping with the INSPORTS mandate of “unearthing talent” in every nook and cranny of Jamaica,” said Thorpe.

Matches will be played on a home and away basis.

St Patrick’s were crowned INSPORTS Primary Schools Netball champion of the Kingston and St Andrew division, as they defeated Mona Heights Primary 13-5 in the final at the Stadium Courts on Tuesday.

In the third-placed playoff, Half-Way-Tree got the better of Clan Carthy Primary 5-2 as the top two teams advanced to the all-island tournament. Earlier, St Patrick’s defeated Half-Way-Tree 13-5 and Mona Heights beat Clan Carthy 12-7 in the semi-finals.

St Patrick’s are the defending all-island champion and winning coach Lecia Walters, said it was a difficult game despite the scoreline.

“The girls really had to dig in. The game was a bit challenging, but we pulled through,” said Walters.

“Well onto the all-island finals and we will just go back to training, fix the things that need fixing and prepare ourselves. Every year the girls look forward to this INSPORTS competition as it gives them a chance to showcase their talents,” she added.

Meanwhile, Mona’s coach Maureen Murray said she believed her girls were a little bit nervous.

“You know experience goes a long way so we will just come back for the next one -- the all-island,” Murray noted.  

“We didn’t settle until the last quarter and shooting wins games and the girls weren’t getting the ball into the circle so we will have to go and work on that,” she added.

Meanwhile, in St Catherine, played at the Ministry of Education in Old Harbour, Bridgeport and Naggo Head advanced to the final set to be played on Friday. Bridgeport defeated McAuley 13-6 while Naggo Head had a hard-fought 7-5 win over Spring Gardens.

Over in Trelawny, First Hill All-Age beat Kinloss Primary 10-0 and Clark’s Town beat Brampton Primary 11-3. In Portland, Buff Bay Primary whipped Port Antonio Primary 14-1.

There were two games in Manchester as McIntosh Primary beat Hatfield Primary 8-4 and Ramble Primary defeated McIntosh Primary who were playing a rescheduled game 3-1.

In St Elizabeth, Santa Cruz beat Holland 7-4; Carisbrook defeated Barbary Hall 16-11, Black River beat Middle Quarters 10-1 and Brompton whipped Burnt Savannah 19-0. While over in Westmoreland, Savanna-La-Mar Primary trounced Little London 13-0. In Hanover, Pell River edged Kendal Primary 2-1, while Green Island whipped Maryland Primary 25-0.

Corporate Area teams Pembroke Hall and St Patrick’s were crowned INSPORTS Primary Schools national football and netball champions, respectively, and walked away with JMD$200,000 (USD$1300) each on a rainy day at the Discovery Bay Community Centre in St Ann.

St Andrews’ Pembroke Hall Primary defeated Corinaldi Avenue Primary of St James 1-0 courtesy of substitute Nathan Hudson while Kingston’s St Patrick’s defeated defending champion Bethabara Primary of Manchester 18-15 in netball.

Both Corinaldi Avenue and Bethabara collected JMD$125,000 (USD$816) for second place.

Meanwhile, St Catherine’s Bridgeport defeated Holland Primary of St Elizabeth 3-1 for third place in football while Corinaldi Avenue beat White Horses of St Thomas 13-8 for third spot in netball. They each received JMD$75,000 (USD$490) while the fourth-placed teams got JMD$50,000 (USD$326).

Tianna Clarke of Pembroke Hall, the top female player was named MVP for the football competition and Danelia Clarke of St Patrick’s was the netball MVP.

In addition, the winning coaches received gift vouchers valued JMD$10,000 (USD$65) each.

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports, Olivia Grange was impressed with the quality of play and congratulated the champions.

“Today is a special day for you,” the minister said before handing out the winners’ trophies.

“Remember, this competition saw over 200 schools starting the competitions and the fact that you are all here as the leading teams means that you have worked hard and trained hard to be here today.

“I want to congratulate Pembroke Hall for being the champion in the football competition and I want to congratulate St Patrick’s for netball. But I want to tell the others you are all winners the fact that you are here today.”

Major Desmon Brown, INSPORTS’ acting executive director noted that these competitions are all about unearthing and harnessing talents at the grassroots level.

“These schools look forward to these competitions. A lot of senior athletes came through these competitions, so it is very important. It is important that these kids have an outlet for sports and this is what it is all about,” said Major Brown.

“During Covid when we didn’t have these competitions and camps we got calls from a parent that one kid threatened to commit suicide because he had nothing to do.”
