After being initially left out for what Head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson described as a lack of match fitness, young star Dujuan ‘Whisper’ Richards has been added to the senior Reggae Boyz squad for their upcoming Concacaf Nations League games against Grenada and Haiti.

Richards, who will celebrate his 18th birthday on Wednesday was called up, as a number of players are faced with injuries, among other challenges, ahead of Thursday's fixture against the Spice Boys.

Right-back Javain Brown is out due to injury, and Adrian Mariappa has relinquished his place in the squad due to personal reasons, while Renaldo Cephas is out due to flight challenges.

Meanwhile, striker Michail Antonio, though still in the squad, will only contest the game against Haiti in Trinidad and Tobago, on Sunday.

The 56th-ranked Jamaicans, who bettered Honduras 1-0 and came-from-behind for a 2-2 stalemate with Haiti, both at the National Stadium, currently sit atop Group B in League A on four points, same as second-placed Cuba.

Victories in both games, would guarantee Hallgrimsson’s side a spot in next month’s quarter-final where they would face Canada or Costa Rica, provided Cuba does not surpass them on goal difference, should they too win their two encounters.

If the Boyz were to finish in the runners-up position, they would have United States or Mexico to contend with in their hunt for a Copa America berth.

Jamaican defender Adrian Mariappa has signed a short-term deal with Football League Two side Salford City FC.

The 36-year-old centre-back has had a distinguished career in the upper levels of the English pyramid, with over 150 Premier League appearances and more than 200 in the Championship.

He is best known for his time at Watford where he had made 340 appearances across two spells, and he has also featured for Crystal Palace, Reading and Bristol City.

More recently he had a spell in Australia with Macarthur FC, and earlier this season made 12 appearances for Burton Albion in League One on a short-term deal.

The two-time FA Cup finalist has also made over 60 appearances for Jamaica in international football.

He is currently with The Reggae Boyz preparing for their CONCACAF Nations League game against Mexico on Sunday and will link up with the Salford City squad next week after his return.

Aston Villa forward Leon Bailey and Spartak Moscow striker Shamar Nicholson headline a 23-man squad named by the Jamaica Football Federation on Monday for the CONCACAF Nations League fixture between the Reggae Boyz and Mexico at the Azteca on March 26.

Bailey and Nicholson are two of a number of players who were not apart of the squad for the two friendlies against the Soca Warriors in Jamaica last week.

Defenders Damion Lowe, Amari’i Bell and Kemar Lawrence are also among those who have returned to the squad while regular skipper Andre Blake remains absent through injury.

The match will commence at 7:00pm JA time (8:00pm ET).

Chelsea midfielder Omari Hutchinson is one of five English-based players that were, on Tuesday, named in the Reggae Boyz squad for two friendlies against Trinidad & Tobago to be held on the 11^th and 14^th of March in Montego Bay.

The 19-year-old, who spent seven years at Arsenal before moving to Chelsea last year, played his first game for the Reggae Boyz in an unofficial 0-6 friendly loss to Catalonia in May 2022.

The other four England-based players in the squad are Tyler Roberts (Wolves), Dexter Lembikisa (Wolves), Delano McCoy-Splatt (Fulham) and Dante Cassanova (Tottenham Hotspur).

Also selected in the squad for the first time is 17-year-old Kingston College standout Dujuan “Whisper” Richards who was recently on trial at Premier League outfit Newcastle United.

Jamaica international Adrian Mariappa has returned to English football with League One team Burton Albion following a brief spell in Australia.

The 36-year-old defender made somewhat of a surprising move after signing with Australian club Macarthur, where he made 19 A-League appearances.  Prior to that, Mariappa was a regular feature in English football, particularly for Watford where he made more than 300 appearances over two spells. 

In addition, Mariappa also played for the Hornets and made appearances in the Premier League with Reading and Crystal Palace.  The deal is initially on a short-term basis but Burton manager Dino Maamria believes his experience will be invaluable.

"He brings a lot of good experience," said Maamria.

"He's a good talker on the field and he adds another option for us.

"He's kept himself fit - his last game was just two weeks ago for Jamaica against Argentina. He had a good season in Australia last year, so he's been at a high standard."

Mariappa has made 64 appearances for Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz and most recently featured for the team against Argentina.

Veteran Jamaica defender Adrian Mariappa has commended an inexperienced Jamaica Reggae Boyz unit for its positive attitude after ending the Austria mini-tournament with a 1-1 draw against World Cup-bound Qatar earlier this week.

With the tournament occurring outside of the FIFA international friendly window, the majority of the team selected to represent the Reggae Boyz were taken from the country’s local league, which left many understandably short on international experience.

The team got off to a rough start with a 3-0 loss to Morocco but rallied back against Qatar and even led the match courtesy of a Jourdain Fletcher goal before being pegged back.

“I thought the goal was brilliant, that’s as good a team goal as I’ve seen that I’ve been a part of with the national team,” Mariappa said.

“It shows that with a bit of composure there is quality there and we can hurt teams, so it’s just about building.  We are not going to get too ahead of ourselves because at the end of the day it is a draw, we should have kept the clean sheet,” he added.

“The attitude from everyone was spot on and that’s the first thing you need, that always gives you a chance and a base to play from.”

The majority of the team will arrive back on the island on Sunday.

Veteran Jamaica Reggae Boyz defender Adrian Mariappa has branded the team's recent 3-0 loss to Morocco in the Austria Mini Football Tournament, on Wednesday, as a valuable learning experience.

The team that consisted of mostly players based in Jamaica, for the most part, struggled to keep up with their African counterparts who created plenty of opportunities before goals from Ahmad Hammoudan (33), Mohamed Nahiri (74^th), and Reda Slim (80^th) decided the contest.

With several players making their debut and a few more with just a handful of appearances, Mariappa who has logged 64 caps for Jamaica, insists it’s all just part of the valuable learning process.

“We were disappointed with the result but there were plenty of positives to take out of the game.  Playing against good opposition who have been together a long time, we only came together recently…a lot of guys were making debuts, just playing with each other.  It was a learning experience,” Mariappa said.

“It was good for the boys to gain experience playing against good sides on decent pitches as well and to able to show what they can bring to the table,” he added.

The Reggae Boyz will next be in action when they play against World Cup hosts Qatar on Friday.

Interim Reggae Boyz Head Coach Paul Hall has named a 24-man squad for the final three FIFA World Cup qualifiers against El Salvador, Canada and Honduras.

Jamaica international Adrian Mariappa has secured a surprise move to Australia Super League club Macarthur FC.

The 35-year-old defender had been without a club since May of this year, after being released by English Championship club Bristol City.  The player had, however, continued to show strong form with his country’s national team, playing in 6 games.

Mariappa was linked with a move back to England with Sheffield Wednesday, who are coached by another former Jamaica international Darren Moore.  The club reportedly offered the out-of-contract player a deal, but he opted for the Super League move instead.

For his part, Mariappa insists he is excited and looking forward to the new challenge.

“I want to thank the owners and the football staff for having faith in me and making this happen,” Mariappa said.

“When the opportunity to join the Bulls arrived, it was one I couldn’t turn down. It’s an exciting new challenge for me in my career and that for me is what I thrive off,” he added.

“I’m hungry to achieve great things with the club and create new memories with the team and the fans.”

Macarthur have won one and drawn one of their two games so far in the 2021/22 season.

Leon Bailey and Michail Antonio will not be available for the Reggae Boyz matches against Japan and Serbia that have been scheduled for June as Jamaica’s senior squad continues its preparation for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July and the World Cup qualifiers in September.
