Bournemouth welcomed David Brooks back to the fold as the midfielder returned to action for the first time since September 2021.

Brooks was diagnosed with stage two Hodgkin lymphoma in October 2021, but he was given the all-clear in May last year.

The Wales international began a modified training programme and eventually returned to a matchday squad when he was named on the bench for Bournemouth's 1-0 win over Liverpool last week.

Brooks went one further on Saturday, coming on as a substitute in Bournemouth's 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa – a damaging result for the Cherries' hopes of beating the drop.

Having seen Brooks play 11 minutes at Villa Park, Bournemouth head coach Gary O'Neil is confident the 25-year-old will be raring to go after the international break.

"I'm delighted for Brooksy. I'm disappointed he came back in a game we didn't get anything from, but the bigger picture is it's fantastic for him," O'Neil told BBC Sport.

"He'll be ready to go again after the international break."

Bournemouth, who are 19th in the Premier League, host Fulham in their next game on April 1.

The Wales international has not featured since being diagnosed with stage two Hodgkin's lymphoma in October 2021.

Brooks was given the all-clear in May and returned to a modified training programme, before signing a new deal with Bournemouth until 2026.

Cherries head coach Gary O'Neil named the 25-year-old among his substitutes for the game against Liverpool at Vitality Stadium, also making three changes to the team that started the agonising last-minute 3-2 defeat at Arsenal.

Lloyd Kelly, Jefferson Lerma and Jaidon Anthony came in for Chris Mepham, Jordan Zemura and Antoine Semenyo.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp made just one change to the team that thrashed Manchester United 7-0 last time out, with Stefan Bajcetic coming in for Jordan Henderson.

Bournemouth were looking to avenge the 9-0 defeat they suffered at Anfield in August.

But the Wales international, a member of Rob Page's squad at Euro 2020 last year, was given the all-clear in May and returned to a modified training programme.

Brooks is eager to resume his career soon after putting pen to paper on a deal until at least June 2026.

"I am so pleased to have signed this deal and am looking forward to the next few years with this great club," he told the club's website.

"Of course, the last year has been extremely difficult for myself, my family and friends but I'm now in a position to resume my career, and getting this deal over the line is the icing on the cake.

"I am working hard alongside the excellent coaching team at Bournemouth and am hoping to be back on the pitch soon.

"In the meantime, I'll be supporting the lads every step of the way."

Bournemouth midfielder David Brooks has revealed he is cancer-free and says he is determined to resume his career "in the not-so-distant future."

The Wales international announced last October that he had been diagnosed with stage two Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Brooks revealed on Tuesday that he has been given the all-clear after undergoing treatment, and the 24-year-old is eager to make his comeback as soon as possible for a Cherries side that are pushing for promotion to the Premier League.

He posted on Twitter: "It has been a few months since my last update and in that time I have thankfully completed my cancer treatment.

"I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the incredible medical staff for their amazing work and support throughout the process.

"Last week I met with my specialist having reviewed my final test results. I am delighted to say the treatment was successful and can say that I have been given the all-clear and am now cancer free.

"These words feel incredible to say and I am so thankful for all of your messages and good wishes, these really helped me through the tough times.

"I am so excited to start the journey back to full fitness and continuing my football career.

"The lads at Bournemouth have had an excellent season so far and I am looking forward to being back at The Vitality to cheer the team on as we head into the most important fixtures of the season.

"I am determined to work my hardest over the months ahead and I can't wait to be back out there playing in front of you on the pitch in the not so distant future."

David Brooks is confident he will make a full recovery and return to playing after the Bournemouth and Wales midfielder was diagnosed with cancer.

Brooks was with the Wales squad last week but left international duty and underwent a medical examination, which found he has stage two Hodgkin lymphoma.

The 24-year-old will undergo treatment next week.

He said in a statement: "This is a very difficult message for me to write. 

"I have been diagnosed with stage two Hodgkin lymphoma and will begin a course of treatment next week.

"Although this has come as a shock to myself and my family, the prognosis is a positive one and I am confident that I will make a full recovery and be back playing as soon as possible. 

"I'd like to show my appreciation to the doctors, nurses, consultants and staff who have been treating me for their professionalism, warmth and understanding during this period.

"I want to thank everyone at the Football Association of Wales because without the swift attention of their medical team we may not have detected the illness.

"I'd also like to say thank you to AFC Bournemouth for all their support and assistance this past week.

"Although I appreciate that there will be media attention and interest, I would like to ask that my privacy is respected in the coming months and I will share updates on my progress when I am able to do so.

"In the meantime, thank you to everyone for their messages of support – it means so much and will continue to do so in the months ahead.

"I look forward to seeing you all again and playing the sport I love very soon."

Brooks joined Bournemouth from Sheffield United in 2018 and enjoyed an impressive first season with the club, scoring seven goals and assisting five in 33 games in all competitions.

Injuries limited Brooks the following year as Bournemouth were relegated, but he impressed again in the Championship, this time with 13 goal involvements across all competitions.

This term, he has three goals in nine matches.
