While still basking in his stunning second-round knockout victory over Colombia’s Randy Ramirez, Guyana’s champion boxer Elton Dharry is brimming with optimism about the prospects of a World title fight sometime this year.
Dharry described his lopsided fight against Ramirez as a much anticipated homecoming that fueled his dominant performance at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown, on December 28.
The 39-year-old WBA number-four-ranked bantamweight, now boasting a stellar 27-6-1 professional record, showcased his experience and tactical acumen against the young and aggressive Ramirez.
"I knew mentally I was going to be more prepared than these guys," Dharry declared.
"I expected Ramirez to be aggressive—he’s young, undefeated, and has some knockouts to his name. I knew he’d come at me hard because I’m the older fighter. He did exactly what I anticipated, although he hit harder than I expected. But I was confident I’d take him out later in the fight," Dharry reflected.
With this victory in the books, Dharry’s focus has shifted to his ultimate goal –a world title fight in 2025. Originally slated to compete for the championship in South Africa on February 15, Dharry has been lobbying to bring the event to his homeland instead.
“May 3, that’s the promise,” Dharry revealed.
“They even offered to hold it in New York, but I pushed to make it happen in Guyana. This is where I want it to be,” he ended.
